It’s the third new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics January 17 2024 releases. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering Marvel’s January 10 2024 releases.
This week in Marvel Comics: Gaiman & Buckingham close a chapter of Miracleman, Nicieza returns to Cable, and an omnibus of Gillen’s almost-perfect Marvel event!
This list includes every comic and digital comic out from Marvel this week, plus collected editions in omnibus, hardcover, paperback, and digest-sized formats. For each new release, I’ll point you to the right guide within my Crushing Comics Guide to Marvel Comics to find out how to collect each character in full – and, if a guide is linked from this post, that means it is updated through the present day!
Marvel Comics January 17 2024 Collected Editions
The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection, Volume 27: The Clone Saga
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302953669 / digital)
See Guide to Spider-Man, Peter Parker (1963-2018). For many years we’ve assume that the Epic line would cut off prior to the Clone Saga in Amazing Spider-Man, if only because there are already a well-mapped set of “Epic” collections for this period across the Spider-line. Well, guess what? Marvel generally follows the Disney rule that it’s always a good idea to re-release popular material every 7-10 years, and that’s how long it has been since the last set of paperback reprints! It’s unclear right now if the Epic line will collect this period as comprehensively as the prior paperbacks or the omnibuses. This stretches a bit farther than I’d expect in Amazing Spider-Man if it was going to collect everything that ran alongside it, but we’ll need to see a Volume 28 to be certain.
Avengers: Beyond
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302952044 / digital)
See Guide to Avengers Flagship Titles (2010 – Present). This collects a fun, five-issue Derek Landy & Greg Land series with ties to the original Secret Wars that follows up on their All-Out Avengers (2022) #1-5. All-Out was much more fun with its one-off issues, whereas this is one continuous story. For me, more of a “read it digital” than “buy it.”
The Incredible Hulk Vol. 1: Age of Monsters
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302954161 / digital)
See Guide to Hulk – Bruce Banner. I can’t say that I’m a fan of this Phillip Kennedy Johnson run on Hulk, though it looks great thanks to Nic Klein’s artwork. The majority of Phillip Kennedy Johnson comics include domestic abuse, sexual assaults, and threats of sexual violence – all largely against women, even if it’s just offhand comments or background action. When I’m looking for consistency from a writer, that’s not what I’m talking about.
A.X.E. Judgment Day Omnibus
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302952907 / digital)
See Guide to Marvel Universe Events – AXE: Judgement Day. Want to read a good Marvel event? Maybe a “Top 5 of All Time” Marvel Event? What if I told you that fully HALF of this event and its tie-ins (and by extension this omnibus) were written ENTIRELY by Kieron Gillen, and then another third of it by his X-Office brain trust of Al Ewing, Gerry Duggan, & Si Spurrier. The result is a high quality event with just a few dull issues (we’re looking at you, Ben Percy). However, for maximum impact you’re going to want to read all of Gillen’s Eternals (2021) first – the entire series is a prologue to this event.
Note that the Events Guide has this material in PERFECT reading order, as worked out with my co-reader VapourSnake.
Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil Vol. 18
(2024 hardcover, ISBN 978-1302953164 / digital)
See Guide to Daredevil. This is wild to say or even to think about, but… Marvel Masterworks is now PAST the initial run of Frank Miller material in Daredevil! This entire volume begins after Miller’s initial departure. Of course, Daredevil is never not good (except for maybe post-300-pre-Kevin-Smith), so this is still Masterworks-caliber material. However, for me personally, my Masterworks shelf ends with Volume 17.
Marvel-Verse: Miles Morales – Spider-Man
(2024 digest-size “Marvel-Verse” paperback, ISBN 978-1302954512 / digital)
See Guide to Spider-Man – Miles Morales. It’s another one of Marvel’s digest-sized, continuity-lite collections for new readers and MCU fans, which are the bane of my existence when it comes to placing them coherently in a collecting guide but a real boon for people wanting to dip their toe into Marvel Comics. This has five Miles issues (all by Bendis) to help orient readers to what he’s all about.
Mighty Marvel Masterworks: The Black Panther Vol. 2: Look Homeward, Avenger
(2024 digest-size paperback, ISBN 978-1302949051 / digital)
See Guide to Black Panther. This digest-sized Silver Age recollection line (somewhat aimed at kids purely by being a good form factor for libraries) is perfect for Black Panther, who has tons of key appearances prior getting his own series that Masterworks and Epics wouldn’t take the time to duplicate. They’re all included in this second volume, which is just a stellar sampler of Silver and early Bronze Age Marvel comics.
New Mutants: Lethal Legion
(2023 paperback, ISBN 978-1302952419 / digital)
See Guide to New Mutants & Young X-Men. I am always ready to cheerlead for women creators on the X-line, and especially for queer women creators, but this was a muddle. It centers on a new character, Escapade, who wasn’t especially well-written in the final arc of the ongoing New Mutants (2019) title. She’s not very well written here, either, and there’s nothing satisfying or remarkable about how it uses characters like Dani, Karma, or Scout. A lot of the plot points just don’t make sense and seem to be happening just to fill out the five issue length. Major points for queerness, but a big deduction for being an unsatisfying slog to read.

Marvel Comics January 17 2024 Physical Comic Releases
Alien (2023) #3 – See Guide to Aliens Comics. Heck yeah, I have a guide for this book as of yesterday’s announcement of the Aliens Comics Guide! I actually love the Aliens franchise and I dig artist Declan Shalvey as a scripter, so I really need to catch up on this. Just let me catch my breath from pumping out a reading guide with so many damn hyperlinks on it. My knuckles are still sore.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #42 – See Guide to Spider-Man – Peter Parker (2018 – Present). Zeb Wells pressed on with Gang War. I’m a few issues behind, but I’m the rare person who actually digs this run. What the opposite of a naysayer? That’s me!
Avengers: Twilight (2024) #1 – See Guide to Avengers Flagship Titles (2010 – Present). Chip Zdarsky doing some sort of alternate future thing. It’s probably great, but y’all know I have no time for the coulda, shoulda, woulda Marvel stories. Give me continuity or give me something else from my pull list!
Black Panther (2023) #8 – See Guide to Black Panther. I need to read into this second arc of Eve Ewing’s run to see if it’s more to my liking, as I’ve dug her on literally every other title I’ve ever read from her (but not on the first three issues of this one).
Cable (2024) #1 – See Guide to Cable. IT’S FABIAN NICIEZA WRITING CABLE! IN CONTINUITY! FUCK YEAH! This will be the #1 book on my pull list this week, with a bullet.
Capwolf & The Howling Commandos (2023) #4 – See Guide to Captain America – Steve Rogers. An alternate history of World War II, but spooky.
Daredevil (2023) #5 – See Guide to Daredevil. I haven’t had a chance to read this Saladin Ahmed & Aaron Kuder series yet, but it’s high on my list!
Fantastic Four (2022) #16 – See Guide to Fantastic Four. If you’ve been following me here or on the Near Mint Condition channel, you know I am madly in love with this Ryan North run of Fantastic Four. I have nothing but positive things to say about it. Fun for all ages.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2023) #10 – See Guide to Guardians of the Galaxy. The penultimate chapter of this Lanzing/Kelly run, which has landed with a bit of a thud for fans. I haven’t had the chance to check it out yet, so I’m not sure if I’m with or against the wisdom of the crowd on this one.
The Invincible Iron Man (2022) #14 – See Guide to Iron Man – Tony Stark. I was tough on the first arc of this title, but the farther Gerry Duggan takes it into the X-line the better and better it gets for me. Not just because “X-STUFF” but because it feels like Tony has a real purpose and an unsolvable challenge. It turns out that the purpose and continuity that comes with being an X-title can even make an middling Iron Man run great. Who knew?
Jackpot (2024) #1 – See Guide to Spider-Man – Peter Parker (2018 – Present). More of Mary Jane with random luck powers! Look, I’m totally into MJ not being with Spidey, but I have to say that this plot pressing on for more than a year is starting to feel like trolling at this point. But… the comics have actually been pretty entertaining. Hard to argue with that.
Miguel O’Hara: Spider-Man 2099 (2024) #3 – See Guide to Spider-Man 2099. Another week, another issue of this Steve Orlando future horror series.
Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age (2022) #7 – See Guide to Miracleman. This is a big, BIG deal – the conclusion to an arc of Miracleman first started by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham over twenty-years ago! I haven’t sat down to do a full read of the Gaiman/Buckingham material yet, but I did browse it while putting my guide together and it is phenomenal stuff – just a slightly slower burn that you might expect after the bombast of Moore. It will be a while before Gaiman and Buckingham churn out their next arc, so this is the perfect time to start catching up on the 29 issues of Miracleman that already exist.
Star Wars: Bounty Hunters (2020) #42 – See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics.
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi (2023) #4 – See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics. This is a direct adaptation of the D+ show by Jody Houser and Salvador Larroca. I read the first three issues for my last appearance on the Near Mint Condition channel, and… it’s actually really good. It tightens up a lot of the lag in the show, and Larroca draws the hell out of Obi-Wan and Vader.
Star Wars: The High Republic (2023) #3 – See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics. I am woefully behind on my High Republic reading, which is the Golden Age that precedes the movie era by hundreds of years.
White Widow (2023) #3 – See Guide to Black Widow. Yelena Belova anchors her own solo series for the first time in 20 years, and back then she was squatting on the Black Widow name. I really like when Marvel uses her in a way that is distinct from the hard and somewhat aloof Natasha, so I’m interested to read this when it’s complete.
X-Men (2021) #30 – See Guide to X-Men – The Age of Krakoa. Duggan continues to guide the team through the Fall of X! I’m just catching up on my post-Gala reading now, so I have no idea what’s happening in here quite yet – don’t spoil me!
