It’s the first new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics January 3 2024 releases.
This week in Marvel Comics: a hidden X-Men omnibus, two of the best issues of Fantastic Four of all time, a new Venom, and more!
This list includes every comic and digital comic out from Marvel this week, plus collected editions in omnibus, hardcover, paperback, and digest-sized formats. For each new release, I’ll point you to the right guide within my Crushing Comics Guide to Marvel Comics to find out how to collect each character in full – and, if a guide is linked from this post, that means it is updated through the present day!
Marvel Comics January 3 2024 Collected Editions
Black Panther by Eve Ewing: Reign at Dusk, Vol. 1
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302948832 / digital)
See Guide to Black Panther. This is the first collection of Ewing’s 2023 Black Panther relaunch. This finds T’Challa stalking the streets of a Wakandan city that is analogous to NYC rather than some future utopia. That allows Ewing to focus on the community and culture of Wakanda more than superhero action. That might prove to be too dense or slow a read for some fans, but for fans of the Ta-Nehisi Coates run who were left wanting to see more of Wakanda outside of the capital, this will hit the spot.
Clobberin’ Time
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302934668 / digital)
The Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing has been experiencing a real resurgence the past few years, including this series written and illustrated by Steve Skroce. It feels like Thing spent most of the 2010s being somewhat uncool and under-utilized, only really featured prominently by Brian Bendis in Guardians of the Galaxy. However, he got the most attention of the entire team in Dan Slott’s Fantastic Four run – not a surprise, since Slott has written him in the past. And now he is often the centerpiece of Ryan North’s F4 run, and he gets his own adventure here from Skroce, ho has an outstanding talent for toeing the line between the heartfelt and the profane (as seen in on of my all-time favorites, Maestros).
Daredevil by Mark Waid & Chris Samnee Omnibus, Vol. 2
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302952808 / digital)
See Guide to Daredevil. This is a new printing of the tome that collects the back half of the Waid/Samnee run. While the run is delightful overall and this is self-contained enough to be enjoyed without the first volume, I think this second bit isn’t quite as strong as the first bit. You might as well start at the start.
Fantastic Four by Ryan North Vol. 2: Four Stories About Hope
(2023 paperback, ISBN 978-1302934927 / digital)
See Guide to Fantastic Four. I just caught up on this run last week for the April solicits show on Near Mint Condition, and issues #10-11 are two of my favorite Fantastic Four issues of all time. Ryan North is turning in an all-time great run on this title in one- and two-issue installments.
Darth Vader – Black, White & Red Treasury Edition
(2024 oversize paperback, ISBN 978-1302952143 / digital)
See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics. These B&W&Red series feature one-shot short stories full of violence. Marvel usually packs them with superstar creators, and despite a few duds in this one there’s plenty to get excited about – writing from Jason Aaron in a story illustrated by Leonard Kirk and colored by Romulo Fajardo Jr. that spans all four issues of this mini-series, plus one-shot stories with writing AND art from Peach Momoko & Daniel Warren Johnson.
X-Men: The Hidden Years Omnibus
(2023 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302950217 / digital)
See Guide to Silver Age X-Men. This is John Byrne’s late-90s series following the X-Men through their “missing” issues between #66 and #93, while the book was featuring only reprinted stories prior to the Giant-Size relaunch in 1975. X-Men is unique among all of Marvel’s titles in that it went to reprints and then returned to relevance – and became the most popular book in all of comics over the following two decades! As for this book… it’s fine. Byrne deliberately styles this in a way that doesn’t feel like the 90s without feeling quite as stuffy as the book could sometimes feel in the Silver Age.

Marvel Comics January 3 2024 Physical Comic Releases
The Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #41 – See Guide to Spider-Man, Peter Parker (2018-Present). We’re in the midst of Gang War! I’ve read up to last month’s issues, and this has been really fun so far – but, I seem to be immune to the Zeb Wells hate. This pays off a lot of little setups from across the prior 40 issues, which I enjoy.
Beware the Planet of the Apes (2024) #1 – Damnit, now I need a guide about Apes!? When does it end?! Okay, but, kidding about endless Fox properties aside, this is a prequel series to the original movie written by Marc Guggenheim, so I’m marked “Safe” from reading this one.
Captain America (2023) #5 – See Guide to Captain America, Steve Rogers. I haven’t read this JMS Cap run yet, so I don’t know a single thing about it other than too-online people whinging about him being a landlord.
Doctor Strange (2023) #11 – See Guide to Doctor Strange. I am way behind on this Jed MacKay run, so no pithy commentary from me!
Fall of the House of X (2024) #1 – See Guide to X-Men, Age of Krakoa. This is it, folks – the end is nigh! Gerry Duggan pens this present day half of the end of the Krakoan era.
Fantastic Four (2022) #15 – See Guide to Fantastic Four. As I mentioned above, I’m in love with this Ryan North series! And, I think this may be the issue where the various kids come back from their year of elsewhen – which not only gives North double the cast to worth with, but also a chance to resolve a dangling plot thread of Franklin Richards’ secret.
Kid Venom: Origins (2024) #1 – See Guide to Venom. Going to show how out of the loop I am with non-X-Books, there’s a Kid Venom now! This single issue collects the multi-part Kid Venom story by Taigami from last year’s Death of the Venomverse (2023) ahead of the character getting his own comic this April. The comic (and character) is set in 10th century Japan, so it has little connection to present day continuity.
Marvel Meow (2024) #1 – A physical issue collecting some (or all?) of the adorable Marvel Meow Unlimited (2022) #1-18.
Marvel Zombies: Black, White & Blood (2023) #4 – The final issue in this two-color anthology.
Miguel O’Hara: Spider-Man 2099 (2024) #1 – See Guide to Spider-Man 2099. It’s Spider-Man 2099 + Marvel Zombies + Steve Orlando, a combination that’s sure to keep me away from a character I generally adore. (Sorry, just telling it like it is!)
Silver Surfer Rebirth: Legacy (2023) #5 – See Guide to Silver Surfer. This second retcon series by Ron Marz and Ron Lim wraps up.
Star Wars: Darth Vader (2020) #42 – See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics.
Star Wars: The High Republic – Shadows of Starlight (2023) #4 – See Guide to Star Wars Expanded Universe Comics.
Thanos (2023) #2 – See Guide to Thanos. I haven’t read this year, but Christopher Cantwell writing Thanos returning to Earth to fight the former Illuminati is sure to be crackling and full of twists.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight (2024) #1 – See Guide to Moon Knight. McKay launches into the next chapter of his Moon Knight saga! This has been one of the best Moon Knight runs of all time, so I’m eager to see where he steers things after the big finale of his first ongoing series.
Venom (2021) #29 – See Guide to Venom. Al Ewing’s slow burning Venom-through-time series marches onward to a third year. I’m surprised this is running so long despite relatively limited buzz (personally, I’m neutral on it), but I guess that’s the strength of Venom in the direct market paired with Ewing.
