Until April 5, I’ll be loosely mapping missing and most-wanted Marvel omnibus volumes every day! It’s finally time, y’all… time to MAP MY X. This post offers maps for X-Men solo titles and character other than Wolverine, who I’ll cover in the next post.
This post explains titles and potential Solo X-Men Omnibus Mapping for entries on the Tigereyes Most Wanted Marvel Omnibus 12th Annual Secret Ballot. You can vote right now (until 5 April 2024 @ midnight US ET) or watch our mega-length announcement stream reviewing every single voting option.
Of course, we could speculate about a “greatest hits” style omnibus of just about every X-Men character! But, this post focuses on characters that either have at least one of their own series or a compelling arc throughout their appearances.
This post covers Bishop, Cable, Daken, Emma Frost, Gambit, Juggernaut, Magneto, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Storm, X-Man – Nate Grey, and more!
If you’re not sure of what to vote for, stick around for my explanations. Or, if you’ve already voted, learn why the team behind the poll decided on these books and titles – including some of my mistakes and regrets as one of the editors of the options on the final poll.
Or… just find some great comics to read!
Remember: These mappings are just my suggestion of how Marvel could assemble these books. They are meant to help you decide on your votes and build your personal reading list, but your vote on the poll is NOT an endorsement of my specific map. It’s a vote in favor of Marvel creating a book with that title or covering that period.
Over-the-top comics posts like this one are made possible via the support of Patrons of Crushing Krisis. X-Men Solo: Cable Omnibus Mapping
Explore Cable’s full reading order in my Guide to Cable.
Cable: The Askani Son (Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix et al)
A vote for this is a vote to collect pre-debut Cable material.
First, this would collect material from Cable’s childhood from Uncanny X-Men (1963) #201, subplot pages (1 effective issue) from X-Factor (1986) showing the developments of Nathan’s powers and abduction in #65-68, X-Men: Phoenix (1999) #1-3, Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix (1994) #1-4, Askani’son (1996) #1-4, and X-Men: Books of Askani (1995) #1.
Then, it could optionally continue to collect some abandoned material that fits prior to Cables run in X-Force – namely, Wolverine/Cable (1999) OGN and Marvel Comics Presents (1988) #90-97. Plus, we could add Cable (1993) #-1, which fits after that OGN.
I’d argue it also makes sense to collect nay of his flashback Wildpack material, so it should also include Cable: Blood & Metal (1992) #1-2 and X-Force (1991) #8.
Cable (1993), Vol. 1 (AKA by Fabian Nicieza)
A vote for this volume is a vote to separate Cable’s solo comic from the X-Force line where it has already begun to be collected.
This would collect a minimum of Cable: Blood & Metal (1992) #1-2, Cable (1993) #1-20, Wolverine (1988) #85, and X-Man (1995) #14.
It could probably push farther into Jeph Loeb’s material, which is why the parenthetical title is just a suggestion to help people vote for the omnibus they really one. If you really wanted to see this series knocked out in three volumes, it would collect, X-Force (1991) #1 & 8, Marvel Comics Presents (1988) #90-97, Cable: Blood & Metal (1992) #1-2, Cable (1993) #1-31, Wolverine (1988) #85, X-Man (1995) #14, and X-Force/Cable Annual 1995.
Cable, Vol. 2 (AKA by Jeph Loeb)
A vote for this volume is a vote to collect the run between Fabian Nicieza’s Cable and Joe Casey’s Cable, which is largely written by Jeph Loeb.
This would collect Cable (1993) #21-50 & -1, X-Force/Cable Annual 1995, X-Man (1995) #18-19 & 30, Incredible Hulk (1968) #444, Cable/X-Force Annual 1996, and X-Force/Cable Annual 1997.
Or, if you prefer to think of this of Volume 2 of 3 collecting this entire series, it would collect Cable (1993) #32-58, X-Man (1995) #30, Incredible Hulk (1968) #444, Cable/X-Force Annual 1996, X-Force/Cable Annual 1997, Cable & Machine Man Annual 1998, Machine Man & Bastion Annual 1998. That still collects a hunk of Jeph Loeb, so the title is not inaccurate.
Cable, Vol. 3 (AKA by Joe Casey)
A vote for this volume is a vote to continuing collecting Cable including the run by Joe Casey beginning with issue #51 and ending in #71
This would collect Collects Cable (1993) #51-71 & Annual 1999; Cable & Machine Man Annual 1998; Machine Man & Bastion Annual 1998; Wolverine/Cable: Guts and Glory (1999) OGN; and X-Men (1995) #46-47.
However, if you prefer to think of this as Volume 3 collecting the remainder of the series up until the Soldier X run, this would collects Cable (1993) #59-96 & Annual 1999, Wolverine/Cable (1999) OGN, X-Men (1995) #46-47, and Dream’s End (Uncanny X-Men #388, & Bishop the Last X-Man #16, X-Men (199) #108). That still collects a hunk of Joe Casey, so the title is not inaccurate.
Cable by Duane Swierczynski
Even though this has its own listing on the poll, I think there’s an argument to be made that is is the same book as “Messiah Trilogy, Vol. 2” and we should have labeled it that way!
This would collect Cable (2008) #1-24, King-Size Cable (2008) #1, X-Men: The Times & Life Of Lucas Bishop #1-3, and X-Men: Future History – The Messiah War Sourcebook, X-Force/Cable: Messiah War #1, X-Force (2008) #14-16, X-Men: Hope (2010) #1, and Deadpool & Cable #25 (and maybe also #26).
X-Men Solo Ongoing Series Omnibus Mapping
Daken: Dark Wolverine
A vote for this book is a vote to collect all of Daken’s original run of solo material.
This book would include Wolverine (2003) #73-74 (back-ups) & Dark Wolverine (2009) #75-90 (and crossovers with Wolverine: Origins (2006) #47-48 and Franken-Castle (2010) #19-20), Dark Reign: The List – Punisher, Dark Wolverine Saga (2009), Daken: Dark Wolverine (2010) #1-23 & 9.1 (and a crossover with X-23 (2010) #7-9), What If? Wolverine Father (2010) #1, and material from Wolverine: Road to Hell (2010) #1.
That’s a pretty big book, but it’s the entire run of everyone’s favorite bisexual murder son from prior to Marvel Now.
Mutant X – Havok
A vote for this book is a vote for a straight-forward recollection of Havok’s pair of Mutant X Complete Collection trades.
This book would include Mutant X (1998) #1-32 and Annual 1999, 2000, & 2001.
NYX
This short book would collect NYX (2003) #1-7 and NYX: No Way Home (2008) #1-6
Oops: X-23 Omnibus Vol. 2 (AKA by Liu)
We goofed! This is the one book on the poll that ALREADY EXISTS IN FULL! I picked it up from the old votes, but this was covered by an omnibus in 2023.
X-Man: Nate Grey Vol. 1
X-Man: Nate Grey Vol. 2
See Guide to X-Man – Nate Grey. A vote for these books is a vote to collect all of Nate Grey’s series spinning out of the Age of Apocalypse!
Speaking broadly, these would collect X-Man (1995) #1-75, -1, Annual 1996, Annual 1997, X-Man/Incredible Hulk (1998), and X-Man: All Saint’s Day (1997), plus crossover issues.
But, this is an X-Men book, so let’s get a little more specific!
These volumes would collect X-Man (1995) #-1, 1-4, material from X-Men: Omega (1995) #1, X-Man (1995) #5-12 (and a page from X-Men: Prime (1995) #1), Excalibur (1998) #95, Cable (1993) #29, X-Man (1995) #13, Cable (1993) #30, X-Man (1995) #14, Cable (1993) #31, X-Man (1995) #15-19, X-Men (1991) #56, X-Man (1995) #20-23 & Annual 1996, X-Man: All Saints Day (1997) #1, Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #420, X-Man (1995) #24-29 & -1, X-Man (1995) #30 (and a page from Cable (1993) #46), X-Man (1995) #31-33 & Annual 1997 (and a page from Daredevil (1964) #371).
I think that’s probably where the first omnibus cuts off.
Then, we’d fill a second volume with X-Man (1995) #34-41, Annual 1998 AKA X-Man/Incredible Hulk (1998), X-Man (1995) #42-46, Cable (1993) #63, X-Man (1995) #47-49, Generation X (1994) #50, X-Man #50-55, Astonishing X-Men (1999) #1-3 & Uncanny X-Men (1963) #375, X-Man (1995) #56-60, Ages of Apocalypse material (in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #377, X-Men (1991) #97, Uncanny X-Men #378, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #26, and material from Uncanny X-Men (1963) #379), and X-Man (1995) #61-70, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #31 (3rd story), and X-Man (1995) #71-75.
X-Men: Gambit by James Asmus (2012 – 2013)
A vote for this would be a vote for a straight-forward collection of Gambit (2012) #1-17.
If you want to argue it should also collect Gambit (2004) #1-12, I’m not sure anyone would stop you! But, that James Asmus & Clay Mann series stands well on its own.
X-Men: Magneto by Cullen Bunn (2014- 2015)
See Guide to Magneto. This would collect Bunn’s incredibly popular Magneto (2014) #1-21, plus some accompanying material from Axis.
Could this simply be the same book as X-Men: Uncanny X-Men (2016) by Cullen Bunn (2016 – 2017)? Perhaps “Magneto & The X-Men by Cullen Bunn”? Marvel doesn’t tend to be as excited about pairing two large ongoing series as they are several smaller ones, but since this is all by Bunn there’s a chance it could work.
X-Men: Mystique by Vaughan & McKeever (2003 – 2005)
This would collect all of the highly-enjoyable Mystique (2003) #1-24. Could we jam in some other Mystique material from before or after this period? Yeah, maybe. But, this series is long enough and singular enough that I think it makes sense to present it here on its own, and collect everything else in a “Mystique: The Early Years” omnibus.
X-Men Solo: Multiple Series or “Greatest Hits” Omnibus Mapping
X-Men: Bishop (1991 – 2001)
This book would be a “Bishop’s Greatest Hits” type collection starting from his first appearance and collecting his first decade of material up until he joins X-Treme X-Men in 2001.
A vote for this book is a vote to collect a minimum of Uncanny X-Men (1963) #282-285 & 287-293, X-Men (1991) #8, Bishop (1994) #1-4, XSE (1996) #1-4, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #13, Team X 2000 (1999) #1, Bishop: Xavier Security Enforcer (1998) #1-3, Bishop: The Last X-Man (1999) #1-16, Gambit & Bishop Alpha (2001) #1, and Gambit & Bishop: Sons of the Atom (2001) #1-6 – plus other key material from Uncanny X-Men and X-Men (especially heading into and out of Age of Apocalypse and Onslaught).
That’s a solid book that grabs tons of uncollected material and gives us a very complete look at Bishop’s first decade of comics history.
X-Men: Bishop by David Hine (District X, Civil War, et al)
This would cover key material from Bishop’s second decade prior to his genocidal turn in the wake of Messiah Complex.
A vote for this book is a vote to collect a minimum of New X-Men (2001) #140-141, X-Men Unlimited (2004) #2 (a pilot for District X), District X (2004) #1-14, Mutopia X (2005) #1-5, House of M: Day After (2006) #1, X-Men: 198 (2006) #1-3, and Civil War: X-Men (2006) #1-4.
That tracks Bishops into and out of his “Private Investigator” phase and also unites David Hine’s X-Men material.
This could also collect some of Bishop’s appearances in Claremont’s run on Uncanny X-Men (1963) #450-474, but they have a much more heroic tone.
X-Men: Emma Frost
See Guide to Emma Frost. A vote for this book is a vote for… something! We purposefully left it loose so it was up to interpretation.
Some people will assume this would simply collect Emma Frost (2003) #1-18, and I think that’s fine!
If you think of it as more of a “greatest hits” collections, then it would collect all of her major material up through the beginning of Grant Morrison’s New X-Men. That would still begin with Emma Frost (2003) #1-18, but would then press onward to Generation X (1994) #-1, X-Men Origins: Emma Frost (2010) #1, Classic X-Men (1986) #7 & 34 (back-up stories), Uncanny X-Men (1963) #129-131 & 151-152, Firestar (1986) #1-4, New Mutants (1983) #26, 40, 62, & 75, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #33 (3rd story), Uncanny X-Men (1963) #281-284, 314, & 318, Generation X (1994) #1-3, X-Force (1991) #42, Generation X (1994) #7 & Annual 1/1995, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #331, Generation X (1994) #22, 24, & 49, War of the Mutants (Generation X (1994) #50 and X-Man (1995) #50), Generation X (1994) #55 & 59, and X-Men Unlimited (1993) #34 (2nd story).
While this necessarily skips over Phalanx Covenant and a ton of amazing Generation X issues, it truly collects EVERY major development for Emma right up to her secondary mutation emerging in the first arc of New X-Men.
X-Men: Gambit (1990 – 2001) (inclusive of Gambit by Nicieza)
If you vote for this assuming it collects just Nicieza’s ongoing Gambit series, I think that’s fine!
That would collect the X-Men/Brood story that sets up Gambit’s backstory (X-Men (1991) #8, Ghost Rider (1990) #26, X-Men (1991) #9, & Ghost Rider (1990) #27). Gambit (1993) #1-4, Rogue (1995) #1-4, Wolverine/Gambit: Victims (1995) #1-4, Gambit (1997) #1-4, Gambit (1999) #0.5, 1-25, Annual 1999, Annual 2000, & Gambit Cyber Comic, Gambit & Bishop Alpha (2001) #1, & Gambit & Bishop: Sons Of The Atom (2001) #1-6.
That’s 56 issues! A big omnibus of all of Gambit’s solo material! There’s no room to add anything! In fact, I have my doubts this could even fit into one omnibus!
However, I think there’s an opportunity for this to have a broader focus than that. It could collect Uncanny X-Men (1964) #266-267, the X-Men/Brood story (X-Men (1991) #8, Ghost Rider (1990) #26, X-Men (1991) #9, & Ghost Rider (1990) #27), Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #52-53, X-Men (1991) #24, Nomad (1992) #16, Gambit (1993) #1-4, Web of Spider-Man (1985) #113, Rogue (1995) #1-4, X-Men (1991) #33 & 38, Wolverine/Gambit: Victims (1995) #1-4, Ghost Rider (1990) #67-68, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #348-350, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #18, Spider-Man Team-Up (1995) #5, Gambit (1997) #1-4, X-Men (1991) #81, material from Contest Of Champions II (1999) #3-5, and Gambit (1999) #0.5, 1-25, Annual 1999, Annual 2000, & Gambit Cyber Comic.
That’s only another 14 issues, but it would force this to be two volumes. That might make sense. It would likely break the first volume prior to Trial of Gambit (and give us the opportunity to pick up another few of his key issues), and then have the second volume be Trial of Gambit through the end of his solo series.
No matter what, I think this is a strong read and work voting for!
X-Men: Juggernaut
What would this include? Juggernaut has over 300 appearances prior to the Age of Krakoa! What would this even collect?
I think if we’re going for greatest hits, this should start with Uncanny X-Men (1963) #12-13, 32-33, & 46, Doctor Strange (1968) #182, Amazing Adventures (1970) #16, Incredible Hulk (1968) #172, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #101-103 & 124 (and material from #122), Spider-Woman (1978) #37-38, Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #229-230, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #183, Marvel Team-Up (1972) #150, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #194 & 217-218, Excalibur (1988) #3, Thor (1966) #411-412, Thor (1966) #429 (and material from 428), X-Force (1991) #3-4 & Spider-Man (1990) #16 (and material from X-Force #2 & 5), Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme (1988) #44, and Incredible Hulk (1968) #402-404.
That’s 32 issues absolutely full of Juggernaut content that represent every major appearance from nearly 30 years of comics! I think there’s room to keep going from there, eventually ending with Juggernaut (1997) #1. That makes a solid early years omnibus that wraps up before we get into him appearing in whole arcs of Uncanny X-Men and New Excalibur, which would be harder to collect effectively.
X-Men: Magik
Magik has always been a popular X-Men character, but her popularity has truly exploded in the past 15 years since she was brought back to modern continuity.
I think the big challenge here is for this to not simply duplicate the contents of New Mutants Omnibus Vol. 1-2. That’s a tough task, because Illyana more or less goes from there to her death and then doesn’t return until X-Infernus in 2009 (aside from some retcon New Mutants mini-series in the late 90s).
I won’t tell you not to vote for this book! I know Magik fans (like Ødfel!) would love to have that all in one place on their shelves. I just thinking mapping it in a unique way is somewhat tricky.
X-Men: Magneto – The Early Years
See Guide to Magneto. I am of the strong opinion that Magneto has one of the best arcs of any Marvel villain from the Silver Age to the 90s. His character development tracks in a much more interesting, consistent way than Doom or Loki – and they both have omnibuses already!
This could collect X-Men: Magneto Testament (2008) #1-5, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #161, Classic X-Men (1986) #12 & 19, X-Men (1991) #-1, Marvel Comics Presents (2007) #3, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #1 & 4-6, Avengers (1963) #47-49, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #43-45, Avengers (1963) #53, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #62-63, Fantastic Four (1961) #102-104, Amazing Adventures (1970) #9-10 (though we could omit these), Avengers (1963) #110-111, Defenders (1972) #15-16, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #111-113 & 150, Marvel Graphic Novel (1982) #5: X-Men – God Loves, Man Kills, Secret Wars (1984) #1-2, Uncanny X-Men #199-200, X-Men vs. The Avengers (1987) #1-4, New Mutants (1983) #40, 51, & 74-75, Captain America (1968) #366-367, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #269 & 274-275, X-Men (1991) #1-3, and Fatal Attractions material (X-Force (1991) #24-25, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #304, X-Men Unlimited (1993) #2, & X-Men (1991) #25).
That’s nearly 60 issues of material, though some of it are brief anthology stories and backups. Together, I think it presents a complete and completely tragic story of Magneto from birth to a seeming death. Im not sure what you could possibly cut without losing an iconic appearance that develops Magneto through his rise and fall.
X-Men: Nightcrawler
This is another one of our “see what you want to see” voting options.
Would this be a “Nightcrawler Greatest Hits” book of his early years and key stories? Or, would it simply collect Nightcrawler (2002) #1-4, Nightcrawler (2004) #1-12, Amazing X-Men (2014) #1-6, and Nightcrawler (2014) #1-12?
It’s up to you! I’ll simply point out that those solo series and the arc of Amazing X-Men are a solid 34 issues all on their own – and none of them have been collected in omnibus!
X-Men: Rise of Apocalypse
This would collect the 300+ pages of the trade of the same name, which included Rise of Apocalypse #1-4, Further Adventures of Cyclops & Phoenix #1-4, X-Men: Apocalypse/Dracula #1-4, Black Knight: Exodus, and Fantastic Four (1961) #19.
What else could it include? Many other X-Men comics have revisited Apocalypse’s early days in flashback, and we could excerpt all of that here. Alternately, we could push onward to his iconic early appearances in X-Factor and Wolverine: Jungle Adventure (1989) OGN.
Or, this could take the approach of collecting ALL of his major appearances. Apocalypse has less than 200 total appearances prior to the Age of Krakoa, and a lot of them are just brief panels or flashbacks to earlier events. If you assume this book would skip both X-Cutioner’s Song and Ages of Apocalypse for being well-collected elsewhere, I suspect we really could get every major Apocalypse appearance collected right through his back-up stories in the X-Men Black (2018) one-shots.
But, if you’re voting for this book you don’t have to worry about all that! Vote with confidence for early Apocalypse stories and let’s see what develops from there.
X-Men: Rogue – The Early Years
We were deliberate in calling this “The Early Years” because Rogue has such a compelling early story that’s not just contained in Uncanny X-Men.
This would start by collecting Classic X-Men (1986) #44 (backup), Marvel Fanfare (1982) #60 (2nd story), Marvel Super-Heroes (1990) #11 (3rd story), Avengers (1963) Annual 10, Uncanny X-Men (1963) #158, Rom, Spaceknight (1979) #31-32 (which sadly probably can’t be included here, despite being an excellent appearance!), Dazzler (1981) #22-24 & 28, and Uncanny X-Men (1963) #170-171, 182, & 185.
That’s a scant amount of material! Where do we go from there? Probably more of Rogue’s best issues of Uncanny X-Men through the team heading into the Siege Perilous in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #247, followed by her spectacular return in #269 & 274-275. And, certainly, the revelatory X-Men Unlimited (1993) #4.
The question is how much more material to push forward to from there. Rogue doesn’t really have any solo stories of her own until the 00s – even her Rogue (1995) #1-4 is much more a Gambit story than it is a Rogue story.
But, if you vote this into the Top 60, I’ll map this for you beautifully, Sugah!
X-Men: Rogue & Gambit, Modern Omnibus Vol. 1 (2001 – present)
We left the title of this loose so you could use your imaginations.
This would obviously include a core of Rogue (2001) #1-4, Rogue (2004) #1-12, and Gambit (2004) #1-12. That’s all previously not omnibused, and it would be a solid accompaniment to their appearances in the X-Treme X-Men omnibus.
That’s already 28 issues! This first volume could end there.
The question is what it would collect after that. There’s some key Rogue/Gambit material during Peter Milligan’s run of X-Men (1991) that could fit into here. There is Gambit (2012) #1-17, which might make more sense here than in a standalone omnibus, And there is Kelly Thompson’s Mr. & Mrs. X (2018) #1-12 (and the preceding X-Men Gold (2017) #30).
Personally, my vote would be for this first volume to press into the Milligan material, and then for the second book to include the Asmus series and the Thompson series (and maybe even Rogue & Gambit (2023) #1-5).
X-Men: Storm
A final title where we left things deliberately looks.
It stands to reason this would pull together Storm (1996) #1-4, Storm (2006) #0-6, & Storm (2014) #1-11. That’s over 20 issues – enough for an omnibus all on its own.
However, that 2014 series might be more at home in a “Storm & X-Force” volume focused solely on Marvel Now.
That would mean we could convert this to an “Early Years” volume that begins with Storm (2006) #0-6 and other flashback material of her youth (including Marvel Team-Up (1972) #100 and Uncanny X-Men (1963) #117), pushes into the best of her Claremont material including her confrontations with Dr. Doom, Dracula, and Emma Frost, her power loss, taking over the Morlocks, fighting Cyclops… there’s tons of amazing material, and we could probably be selective enough such that this perfectly meets up with Storm (1996) #1-4 on the other side.
You can vote for either of those book mappings – they’re both covered by this potential omnibus title.

The mapping for your Magneto omni would be 1568 pages, and that’s just the content itself. But I agree all of it is pretty much necessary, so it should be two volumes. Vol. 1 could end with God Loves Man Kills, which feels appropriate.

The Doom Omnibus was 1336 pages, so we’re not entirely outside of the realm of possibility! Maybe if we can trim out 3-5 issues.

Where would Iceman (1984) #1-4 go?
