I do not vote party lines, dammit, i vote issues. My number 1 issue is support of abortion, just because that’s how i am. And Bush doesn’t support that. It doesn’t get much simpler than that, does it?

Of course, taking communism in practice is even a step beyond Marxist theories, since Marx didn’t consider himself a Marxist. He said that society was growing towards freedom the way an acorn grows to a tree: inevitable unless totally crushed. He listed the progression as from tribal to city-state to feudal to capitalist to communism. But, truly, how will communism lead to freedom? If anything, it would seem to lead to an eventual break back into a tribal system where there is no established base of power or wealth. Thus, Communism is only the end of our evolution to freedom in that it would send us irrevocably back to the beginning. As such, it is like an apocalypse from which we can never emerge unscathed; the subversive atom bomb of society. God save us.

Maybe i’m just too deeply entrenched in capitalism, but i think communism is a digression in society rather than forward progress. I like to be able to have power, i like to make more money for doing a better job, and i like democratic governments. I realize that an ideal commune would give everyone power & choice and that everyone would be driven to do their best at every job, but after the collection of individuals increased past even 100 i don’t think the system could be upheld anymore. A husband and wife can barely share their power; how can 50 people living on a farm do it?

Today both Philosophy and German History classes began their Communism sections, and both of them left me thinking that it’s sounds like an overly idealic load of shit. Especially after talking about Marx. I feel nice about actually finding the idea not valid past the fact that i’m a capitalist; we didn’t even get to the capitalism related parts yet.

Laurel will be so happy to hear that i’m not obsessed with her anymore! One year to the week, what a tidy obsession that was.
