Marvel’s Many Spider-Women
Marvel never intended to have a Spider-Woman.
It’s true! The first Spider-Woman was introduced in a rush because Marvel was concerned that the rights-holder of the Spider-Man cartoon would be able to secure a copyright on the character by introducing her first.
Since then, the codename of “Spider-Woman” has had a tangled history at Marvel, being occupied by no less than four characters (plus a handful of Spider-Girls). However, none of these characters were part of Marvel’s A-list until 2006, when Spider-Woman joined the Avengers. Since then, she has been one of the most-used guest-stars in the Marvel Universe.
That development greatly simplifies keeping tracking of the Spider-Woman herself, but in 2014 Marvel amped up the Spider-Women in a major way, introducing Silk and Spider-Gwen, plus re-emphasizing Spider-Girl.
That’s a lot of Spider-Women! Here’s how the guide breaks down:

Spider-Woman next appears (and is presumed dead!) in Avengers #238. Her appearances as a guest-star continue below.
In 1980-1983, Amazing Spider-Man featured a character named Madame Web in issues 210, 216, 229-230, and 239. She is not commonly known as “Spider-Woman” so is not tracked by this guide, but she will intersect twice with Julia Carpenter later in this chronology.
Jessica Drew, Guest Star (1983 – 1999)
Jessica Drew has no home-base in this period nor does she spend much time in the Spider-Woman costume. She somewhat settles into a routine as a supporting player to Wolverine starting in 1988.
The Avengers (1963) #238, 240-242: See Avengers. #240-241 are a story focused on Spider-Woman; they are collected with her Masterworks, above. She appears only briefly in #238 and #242.
After Avengers #242: West Coast Avengers (1984) #1, Doctor Strange (1974) #67
Uncanny X-Men #203 & 206: See Uncanny X-Men. Jessica is a supporting character in both issues. Intriguingly, #206 is the first time we see two Spider-Women in a single issue (but far from the last!)
Ka-Zar the Savage (1981) #34 – This appearance is unconfirmed and may just be a single-panel reference.
Wolverine (1988) #1-16: See Wolverine. Her participation is only implied in #1; she does not appear in #9.
After Wolverine #3: Marvel Age Annual #4
After Wolverine #16: Jessica appears briefly in Uncanny X-Men #261, then Wolverine (1988) #27, and in Wolverine’s thoughts in #29.
Evolutionary War: See Marvel Universe Events. Jessica Drew appears in flashback through the backup features.
Unconfirmed appearances after Evolutionary War: Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme (1988) #9, Silver Sable and the Wild Pack (1992) #35.

Julia Carpenter, Spider-Woman (1984 – 1994)
Marvel’s Secret Wars maxi-series did more than introduce the black spidey-suit that would eventually become Venom – it also introduced an all-new Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter. Unlike Jessica Drew, who had been embroiled in a life of super powers from an early age, Julia was sucked in much later in life by friend Val Cooper. Though she debuted in Secret Wars,

Both Mattie and Charlotte continue into Spider-Woman (1999), directly below.
Mattie Franklin in Spider-Woman (1999 – 2000)
This title could easily be called Spider-Women, as it featured all of Marvel’s arachnid ladies up to this point – Jessica Drew (#1-11), Madame Web (issues #1-6, 8-11, 14, 18), Julia Carpenter (issues #1 & 3-4), and a newer pair – Charlotte Witter (#1-3, 8-9) and the star Mattie Franklin (#1-18).
Spider-Woman (1999) #1-18: Not collected
After #8: Jessica appears in Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 2 #14, maybe in Avengers Forever #12
As an epilogue to this series, Mattie Franklin next appears in a memorable (and very adult) arc of Alias from #16-21, where she is joined by Jessica Drew in #19-21.
- Jessica next appears in Astonishing Tales #3 (unconfirmed – this is a 2009 series) before continuing to the lead-up to New Avengers, below.
- Mattie next appears in The Loners, below.
- Julia Carpenter next appears in Ms. Marvel #6, below.
- Charlotte Witter has not appeared again as of early 2016.
Anya Corazon, Araña, in Amazing Fantasy & Araña (2005 – 2014)
According to CBDB, Araña makes her first appearances in Avengers (1998) #28 & Avengers Two: Wonder Man and Beast (2000) #1. However, I am unable to confirm either.
Amazing Fantasy #1-6: Arana, Vol. 1: Heart of the Spider (digest size)
Spider-Man Family (2005) #1: This may not be in continuity, but it is collected in
Spider-Man: Spider-Women
Araña #1-6: Arana, Vol. 2: In The Beginning (digest size)
Araña #7-12: Arana, Vol. 3: Night of the Hunter (digest size)
Note that this has grown exorbitantly expensive on Amazon; you might be better off on eBay.
After her series ends:
G.L.A. #2: A brief appearance
Marvel Team-Up (2004) #16
Spider-Man & Araña Special: The Hunter Revealed (2006)
This does not appear to be collected, I
Ms. Marvel (2006) #6-8, 11-14, and 18-24: See Captain Marvel. Arana is a regular supporting character in this book
In that period, her other appearances are in Civil War (2006) #6, Doctor Strange: The Oath (2006) #1, Iron Man (2005) #14, Civil War: Battle Damage Report (2007) #1, The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #538, 587, and 600 (only in a vision).
In Marvel Now,Araña appears briefly in Young Avengers (2013) #11-12 and then is the star of Avengers Assemble (2012) #21-25 – See Avengers Assemble
Anya also appears in Amazing Spider-Girl (2006), but I don’t believe that series exists in main 616 continuity, since it stars May Parker – the daughter of Peter Parker and Mary Jane! Maybe it’s a time-travel plot.
Spider-Woman’s Deceitful Web in New Avengers (2005 – 2010)
How can I explain this without spoiling one of the best Marvel stories of the 2000s… Jessica Drew in these issues isn’t necessarily entirely forthcoming. You’ll understand that better once you read Secret Invasion.
Before New Avengers, Jessica appears in: The Avengers (1963) #501-503 (this may be only in flashback, need to check) and Spider-Man Family (2005) #1 (unconfirmed).
Giant-Size Spider-Woman (2005) #1: The original story from this issue is collected variously along with New Avengers (2005) #11-15. See Guide to New Avengers (2005 – 2010). Spider-Woman is not being deceitful here.

The tie-ins to this event are contained entirely in two books, but I’ve included more information at Marvel Universe Events: Spider-Verse. All of the Spider-Women star prominently in this event, but specifically we see Spider-Woman and Silk in Spider-Woman and Spider-Girl in Web-Warriors

Spider-Woman (2020) #1-20 by Carla Pachecho & Pere Pérez
This launched to massive fan interest, but its momentum somewhat hampered by coming out just as the pandemic briefly shut down the entire comic industry. Despite that, it is a fantastic Jessica Drew series that examines her history and gives her new enemies to play with.

Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman series are from 2015 and 2016-2017, not 2014 and 2015

That’s not how Marvel has them listed on Unlimited, which is my default source of truth. It’s part of the eternal “cover date vs release date” struggle.
