The definitive, chronological, and up-to-date guide and trade reading-order on collecting Daredevil comic books via omnibuses, hardcovers, and trade paperback graphic novels. A part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated November 2018 with titles scheduled for release through July 2019.
Collecting Daredevil
The debut of Daredevil in 1964 from Stan Lee and Bill Everett took the Marvel method of superheroes to a whole new level. Everett was the creator of one of Marvel’s first heroes – Namor, The Sub-Mariner!
For the past few years, Lee had created an indelible series of flawed, human heroes whose powers doubled as afflictions. The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, The X-Men – these characters were compelled to be heroes by the curse of their abilities, and they were all as interesting out of costume as in.
Daredevil took the “power as a burden” metaphor to a new level, with Matt Murdock’s origin story granting him enhanced senses but leaving him without the power of sight. The burden of Daredevil’s powers was an actual physical handicap that altered his life as a child for years before he ever donned a costume to avenge his father’s death!
Lee was initially concerned that the idea of his new hero might be offensive to blind people, but was overwhelmed by the positive response from charities working with the blind! See The Men Without Fear documentary for more detail.
First, to make things less confusing, this guide details three distinct formats of classic Daredevil collections:
- Essentials: Affordable black & white sequential collections
- Marvel Masterworks: Premium-format color sequential collections
- Epic Collections: Trade paperback gapless collections released in random order
- Omnibus Editions: Massive, collector-edition tomes with oversize pages
Then, the guide is organized in several eras through present day:
- Silver Age Daredevil (1964 – 1979)
- Daredevil by Frank Miller & Denny O’Neil (1979 – 1986) – The Kingpin / Bullseye / Elektra period
- Daredevil by Ann Nocenti (1986 – 1991) – The Typhoid Mary period
- Daredevil by D. G. Chichester (1991 – 1994)
- Daredevil Winds Down (1994 – 1998)
- Daredevil Returns (1998 – 2001) – The Kevin Smith & Marvel Knights period
- Daredevil by Brian M. Bendis & Alex Maleev (2001 – 2006)
- Daredevil by Ed Brubaker (2006 – 2009)
- Daredevil in Shadowland by Andy Diggle (2009 – 2011)
- Mark Waid’s Man Without Fear (2011 – 2015)

Daredevil Epic Collections
Marvel’s Epic Collections represent a consistent, affordable, full-color bookshelf format of issues in perfect continuity order without a single gap. The catch? Marvel is releasing them in a random order to focus on the biggest gaps first – since early issues are already well-covered by both Essentials and Masterworks.
Epic editions are also listed below in their chronological placement, as they are frequently the only coverage of a specific run.

Daredevil by Frank Miller & Denny O’Neil (1979 – 1986)
Frank Miller’s run on Daredevil was effectively a “reboot” in the terms we use to describe comics today. In his run he methodically deconstructed Daredevil’s origins, replacing his rogues gallery and redefining his supporting players. He turned Daredevil from another Marvel do-gooder to an urban vigilante fighting for both his city and his life in a bloody, adult run.
This is one of the most highly-collected creator runs in Marvel history. However, no run of TPBs collect it as succinctly as this grouping of Omnibuses. Even the ostensibly same “Daredevil by Miller & Janson” line, below, does not exactly duplicate the contents of the two main Daredevil Omnibus volumes – they omit the Man Without Fear mini and #226-233
as oversize omnibus editions…

Daredevil by Brian M. Bendis & Alex Maleev (2001 – 2006)
Brian Bendis was still relatively new to Marvel when he took on Daredevil (and the contemporaneous Alias) in 2001, his only notable work to that point being a the Daredevil: Ninja miniseries and the launch of Ultimate Spider-Man a few months prior. By the middle of the run, Bendis was on his way to becoming Marvel’s prohibitive star writer as he also took over Avengers with his infamous Disassembled arc.

Daredevil by Ed Brubaker (2006 – 2009)
Ed Brubaker came to Marvel hot off the success of his Catwoman, Gotham Central, and his own Sleeper for DC and immediately relaunched Captain America into his Winter Soldier period with great acclaim.
Brubaker’s noirish tendencies made him the perfect successor to Brian Bendis’s run on the title, which left Matt Murdock in the seemingly dead-end setting of Riker’s Island prison. His run on Daredevil is terse, briskly-moving, and occasionally serpentine in its approach to Matt Murdock’s battle with both his enemies and his infamy.

Mark Waid’s Man Without Fear (2011 – 2015)
By 2011 Daredevil had been put through the wringer for a decade with no sign of lighthearted superhero adventures in sight. Comic superstar Mark Waid took over the title with the idea that Daredevil had reached so many unimaginable lows over the past 13 years of comics that the only direction he could go was up.
That didn’t mean Daredevil would have it easy – far from it! – but this series refocused on a smiling, can-do Matt Murdock as he re-found the joy in his double life.

Hello – what an amazing job! I did notice that you are a little behind on Daredevil – I collect DD and Dr Strange – if I can help keep these up to date for you I would be glad to – just let me know.
Thanks for the very kind offer to pitch in, Greg! Updating these older single-hero guides that stretch back to the Silver Age can be a real chore, not only because of the longevity of the characters but because of the complexity of the formatting. I’m trying to tackle one or two a month, probably leaving Cap and Spidey until last because they are terrifyingly complex. Check out the recently-revised Iron Man guide to see the formatting I’m moving toward.
