The definitive, chronological, and up-to-date guide on collecting Captain America comic books via omnibuses, hardcovers, and trade paperback graphic novels. A part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated August 2024 with titles scheduled for release through July 2025.
Collecting Captain America
Captain America was not Marvel’s first hero, but he’s proven to be their most-enduring.
Steve Rogers debuted in the pages of his own self-titled comic in March 1941, famously punching out Hitler on the cover even though the United States would not officially join World War II until December of that year. In the context of his Golden Age comics, he was an American Super-Soldier, leading troops abroad against Axis powers.
Though Captain America comics continued after the war with a dwindling audience, Marvel’s writers decided that the fateful day that left Steve Rogers frozen in ice and Bucky Barnes presumed dead could be inserted after his issue #48 in 1945, with well-meaning imposters posing as Cap and Bucky appearing afterwards.
Captain America would remain on ice until the legendary Avengers #4, released two years into the throes of Marvel’s early-60s superhero resurgence. The rest, as they say, is history – someone wearing the mantle of Captain America has appeared in an ongoing title from that point until the present day.
There are hundreds of different collections of Cap, especially his original run from 1959 to 1996. However, there are a few specific formats of books that cover large portions of this title, and I’ll cover those first – Essentials, Epics, Masterworks, and Omnibuses.

Omnibus & Oversize Hardcover
These massive tomes have larger pages and collect huge swaths of comics – between 25 and 50 issues a book. They look beautiful on a book-shelf!
Omnibus editions are also listed below in their chronological placement, as they are frequently the only coverage of a specific run. Other omnibuses not primarily centered on this material are also listed in this guide chronologically.
Click to expand a list of Omnibus volumesMarvel Masterworks
Masterworks are not listed below in their chronological placement, but they are referenced if they are the only means of obtaining an issue.
Marvel Masterworks editions are high quality, full color reproductions of original issues. The volumes were originally released as hardcovers, with many now out of print. Some of the earlier editions were also released in paperback. If you decide to buy hardcovers, the newest editions are from 2003 and, with silver dustjackets.
Captain America’s Golden Age Masterworks are listed in that section by release chronology. This list is of Silver Age masterworks beginning in 1964.

Mighty Marvel Masterworks
Mighty Marvel Masterworks are digest-sized collections of sequential Silver and Bronze Age material. They do not line up with the volume breaks in the original Masterworks volumes. This is a separate reprint line with a similar name.
Mighty Marvel Masterworks Vol. 1: The Sentinel of Liberty (2022 paperback, ISBN 978-1302946159 / digital)
Collects Cap stories from Tales of Suspense (1959) #59-77
Mighty Marvel Masterworks Vol. 2: The Red Skull Lives (2023 paperback, ISBN 978-1302948979 / digital)
Collects Cap stories from Tales of Suspense (1959) #78-94 and material from Not Brand Echh (1967) #3.
Mighty Marvel Masterworks Vol. 3: To Be Reborn (2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302954321 / digital)
Collects Cap stories from Tales of Suspense (1959) #95-99, and then all of Captain America (1968) #100-105.
Epic Collections
Marvel’s Epic Collections represent a consistent, affordable, full-color bookshelf format of issues in perfect continuity order without a single gap. The catch? Marvel is releasing them in a random order to focus on the biggest gaps first – since early issues are already well-covered by both Essentials and Masterworks.
Epic editions are also listed below in their chronological placement, as they are frequently the only coverage of a specific run.
Click to expand a list of Epic Collection volumesEssential Captain America
Marvel’s Essentials line packs tons of comics into each black and white, phone-book-sized edition with newsprint paper. If you don’t care about color and glossy paper, this is the best way to acquire your favorite classic stories quickly.
Essential Editions are not repeated below in their chronological placement, since B&W is not the original format of this series.
Click to expand a list of Essential volumesThe Essentials line has been discontinued and will not extend past #257. Jump to that spot in the chronology.
Licensed Reprints
Starting after 2020, Marvel began to license reprints of their classic Silver Age comics to other publishing companies to product new and different formats aimed specifically at bookstore shoppers rather than the comic book direct market.

All-New, All-Different Marvel:
Captain America: Sam Wilson (2015) #1-25 &
Captain America: Steve Rogers (2016) #1-19 & 25
The All-New, All-Different era launches with former Falcon Sam Wilson carrying the shield, but after the Standoff mini-event Steve Rogers also re-adopts his mantle – leaving us with two different Captains working at cross-purposes to one another. Yes, this is the controversial “Hydra Cap” run of Steve Rogers, where he is a villain throughout the entire series. There’s a clear, reality-bending explanation for it, but it’s still jarring to read Cap being incredibly evil..

This run was launched by one of my favorite creative teams in all of comics, writing partners Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing and artist Carmen Carnero. Another Captain America series in this period, Captain America: Symbol of Truth (2022), focuses on Sam Wilson as Cap, see Guide to Sam Wilson, Falcon & Captain America.

Captain America (2023) #1-(ongoing) by J. Michael Straczynski
JMS makes Cap a local hero, focusing on his presence in New York City. The first arc uses flashbacks to delves into the largely unexplored period of the 1930s between his mother’s death when he was 14 years old and when he received the Super Soldier Serum. In this period, Cap also stars in the Blood Hunt tie-in arc of Avengers (2023) and anchors Avengers Assemble (2024) – see Guide to Avengers titles (2010 – Present).
#1-6: by J. Michael Straczynski Vol. 1: Stand (2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302955670 / digital)
#7-12: by J. Michael Straczynski Vol. 2: Trying to Come Home (2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302955687 / digital TBA)
#13-18: by J. Michael Straczynski Vol. 3 (2025 paperback, ISBN 978-1302955694 / digital TBA)
Non-Continuity Captain America
The Ghost Army OGN (2023 hardcover, ISBN 978-1338775907 / 2023 paperback, ISBN 978-1338775891 / digital)
By Alan Gratz & Brent Schoonover. Published by Graphix, which means this is of dubious continuity. This is set in WWII.
Captain America: Steve Rogers Declassified: Notes, Interviews, and Files from the Avengers’ Archives
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1637743461 / digital)
This boasts that it consists of “in-universe content as written by Captain America and his friends, allies, and foes from across the Marvel Universe,” but it is unclear if that will be entirely as excerpts from existing comics or if some will be written originally by these authors – which makes this of dubious continuity.
Capwolf & The Howling Commandos (2023) #1-4 (2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302947194 / digital)
An alternate take on WWII.
Captain America for Dummies (2025 paperback, ISBN 978-1394299447 / digital TBA)

This list is outstanding, and I’ve been referring to it to obtain a complete collection of Captain America in trade form. I do have one I’m not seeing on the list. The title is Captain America: Living Legend, and it was published in 2014. It collects a four-issue series. Not sure where it falls in the reading order. Thanks!
Jamie B says
This is still missing. It comes before the 2013 Captain America series.
JB says
The Trial of Captain America Omnibus actually collects- Captain America: Who Will Wield The Shield? 1; Captain America (2005) 602-610; Steve Rogers: Super Soldier 1-4; Captain America (2005) 611-619, 615.1; Captain America (2011) 1-10
JB says
Missing Daredevil / Captain America: Dead on Arrival one-shot (2008) which occurs prior to Civil War, and Secret War as Tony and Steve are both on the Avengers together and Nick Fury is still working for S.H.I.E.L.D.
JB says
Captain America Omnibus, Vol. 4: The Trial of Captain America collects Captain America (2011) 1-10, not Captain America (2010) 1-10
JB says
Captain America: Fighting Avenger One-Shot is out of continuity, but Captain America Corps features three 616 characters and is in continuity. It occurs during Captain America #611.
JB says
Missing the Korvac Saga retelling ‘Captain America & the Korvac Saga’ from 2010/2011. It’s out of continuity seeing as how it retells that saga but on an alternate Earth
JB says
Captain America: Allies & Enemies was released while Bucky was Cap and features him for the most part, so it belongs in Captain America, Vol. 1 (again) – The Heroic Age (2010 – 2011)
Brent says
The Ta-Nehisi Coates oversize hardcover volume 2 collects issues #13- 30 (not 25). Thanks for putting this great list together!
Michael Harney says
This is a great list! With my OCD tendencies, it was tough to figure what order to put the different names, versions and volumes with renumbering and legacy numbering switchbacks.
Jamie B says
The information for ‘Winter Soldier: Bitter March’ has Winter Soldier misspelled as ‘Winrer Soldier’
Jamie B says
Winter Soldier: Bitter March, also fits best after #11 of Captain America (2013) as #12 is when the flashbacks to Ran Shen’s life post Winter Soldier: Bitter March begin.
Jamie B says
Captain America (2013) #24 is an Axis tie-in under the ‘March to Axis’ banner.
Jamie B says
Missing the 2015 ‘Captain America Featuring Road Force Infinite Comic’ Harley Davidson motorcycle ad comic.
Jamie B says
Missing ‘Captain America and the First Thirteen’ from 2011 which is collected in ‘Operation: S.I.N.: Agent Carter’
Jamie B says
Issue #24 of the 2013 Captain America series is a ‘March to Axis’ tie-in.
