The definitive issue-by-issue collecting guide and trade reading order for Robin in DC comic books as collected in omnibus, hardcover, and trade paperback collections. Part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics and The Definitive Guide to Collecting Batman Comics. Batman’s sidekick and apprentice has been a critical, defining element of the caped crusader from his first appearance a year into Batman’s life to his omnipresence in Batman stories of the Golden and Silver Age to handing down the mantle to new heroes starting in the early 1980s.

Robin gives Batman contrast – makes him vulnerable but also relatable. On his own, Robin often represents represents the exuberance, athleticism, and growth that the more static character of Bruce Wayne cannot show.

Robin began to appear in his own short, back-up stories in Star Spangled Comics in 1947-1952, sometimes as the headlining star. He would later be a founding member of Teen Titans, and the current holder of the Robin mantle is almost always on the team. In the 1990s, a third incarnation of Robin launched into the first Robin limited and ongoing series. Later, in 2009, Batman and Robin became a core title in DC’s Batman line.

Dick Grayson: The Golden, Silver, & Bronze Age Robin

Dick Grayson never headlined a titled Robin series during his time as the Boy Wonder, though he would later star in flashback tales as Batman’s original Robin.

Detective_Comics_1937_0038Dick Grayson was Batman’s original Robin, debuting in Detective Comics (1937) #38 just one year after Batman’s debut and immediately continuing to Batman (1940) #1 that spring. Issue #38 is his actual origin told in the present day, including the death of his parents!

He persisted as Robin through the switch from Golden Age Robin [CBDB] to Earth 1 Silver Age Robin [CBDB] in Detective Comics (1937) #327. He was a founding member of the original Teen Titans in 1966 and New Teen Titans in 1980.

Grayson remained Robin until the brink of Crisis on Infinite Earths. He makes the switch to Nightwing [on CBDB] in Tales of the Teen Titans #43-44 in 1984. However, since he underwent no major changes in Crisis (and, in fact, most of the Titans do not have a pre/post Crisis distinction), the Silver Age Robin and Nightwing are considered to be the same characters in the post-Crisis universe.

(Note that there is also an Earth 2 Dick Grayson Robin [CBDB], who exists primary to be the Robin in the 60s and 70s stories of Earth 2. Generally, it is understood that his history is identical to that of Earth 1 Robin, such that you can consider Star Spangled Comics (1941) to be about both of them.)

Jason Todd: The Short-Lived Robin

Jason Todd was the second Robin [CBDB] and the first Post-Crisis Robin [CBDB]. His tenure was short-lived … as was he! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Batman_1940_0427Todd was introduced in Batman (1940) #357 and Detective Comics (1937) #526 in 1983, transitioned to Post-Crisis in Batman #401 in 1986. Hee shuffled offstage just two years later in 1988 in “A Death in the Family.” Todd’s Robin never had a title to himself. He appeared regularly in Detective Comics and Batman before Crisis, and primarily in Batman after Crisis.

There no specific Jason Todd Robin collections, and the immediately pre-Crisis period in which his first appears is severely under-collected. Batman: Second Chances collects a chunk of his earliest post-Crisis stories along with Batman in Batman (1940) [Thanks for the reminder, Arthur!]. Todd’s most notable story is his last – “A Death in the Family.” Be on the lookout for a Red Hood guide in the future!

Tim Drake: The Primary Post-Crisis (Red) Robin

Tim Drake [CBDB] makes his debut in Batman (1940) #436, but really hits the scene in the subsequent arc “A Lonely Place of Dying.”

Robin_1993-001_alternate_coverHe doesn’t make many other appearances as Robin after “Lonely Place” and prior to his first series in 1991 – just Batman (1940) #457 (in which he officially becomes Robin, per Batman) and briefly in Nightwing’s thoughts in The New Titans (1988) #71 (which was released a month prior to #457, but has Nightwing already referring to him as Robin).

Tim Drake would become the first Robin to be a star in his own right, anchoring a solo title from 1991 to 2011 with the introduction of New 52. He also spent nearly two decades as Batman’s sidekick, putting in hundreds of appearances across all of Batman’s titles and in Teen Titans, among other places. Even when a new Robin supplanted him, he maintained the title of Red Robin [CBDB], later renaming himself to Tim Wayne [CBDB].

After the end of his Red Robin series and the transition to post-Flashpoint continuity [CBDB], Drake starred in Teen Titans (2011 & 2014) and was one of the anchoring heroes of Batman & Robin Eternal. In Rebirth he is curiously out of both Titans and Teen Titans, appearing sporadically in Detective Comics.

Robin (1993 – 2009)

The first Robin ongoing series debuted in the midst of Knightfall’s Knightquest chapter. It was written by Chuck Dixon through issue #100. Curiously, Annuals 1-2 were released prior to the start of the ongoing series!

As his series debuted, Robin was also an ongoing star of the Showcase ’93 (1993) anthology series. Damian Wayne: The Hereditary RobinBatman_and_Robin_2009_001

Damian Wayne [CBDB] makes his debut in Batman (1940) #655. He is a key component of Grant Morrison’s Batman epic – in some ways, he is the star of it as much as Batman!

Damian is teased as a future Robin [CBDB] during Batman RIP in Batman (1940) #676, but our proper introduction to him as in Batman and Robin (2009). He continues in the role of Robin after Flashpoint [CBDB] through New 52 and into Rebirth.

In Rebirth, he anchors Super Sons in addition to appearing in Teen Titans and guesting frequently in Nightwing.
