Near Mint Condition announced another one of the final Marvel omnibuses for the first half of 2027, and this June 2027 book is also the final omnibus collecting it’s lengthy solo series – the longest-running solo title for any individual X-Man! That’s right, it’s time to complete your shelves, bub: Wolverine The Return of Weapon X Omnibus [AKA Wolverine Omnibus Vol. 8]!
This omnibus is the final collection of the Wolverine (1988) series as well as all of Wolverine’s appearances in Marvel Comics Presents (1988) (which wrapped up in Vol. 5), and all of his original graphic novels (the last of which was in the prior volume, Not Dead Yet Omnibus AKA Volume 7).
With anthology stories and OGNs wrapped up, does this book collect anything other than Wolverine (1988) issues? Yes it does! That’s because this run was being released alongside Grant Morrison’s New X-Men era of X-Men, which was also a period that included many mini-series in many different styles of storytelling.
Let’s take a look at what we predicted this book might contain on the 2026 Tigereyes Most-Wanted Marvel Omnibus poll versus the announced contents.
We already knew the base contents of this book, because it would surely follow the Epic Collection mapping:
Wolverine (1988) #159-189 & Wolverine Annual 2000-2001 and possibly also Wolverine: The Origin (2001) #1-6
However, with most of the other books in this omnibus line extending significantly beyond the contents of the Epic Collections, all of this material was also potentially in play:
- Logan appears in Wolverine/Hulk (2002) #1-4 [a Marvel Knights series] after Wolverine (1988) #182
- Logan does not appear in Sabretooth: Mary Shelley Overdrive (2002) #1-4
- Logan appears in Wolverine: Netsuke (2002) after Wolverine (1988) #186
- Logan appears in Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours (2003) after Wolverine (2003) #6
- Logan appears in Wolverine/Doop (2003) after Wolverine (2003) #6
- Logan appears in Wolverine: Xisle (2003) #1-5 after Wolverine (2003) #6
- Logan appears in Wolverine: Snikt! (2003) after Wolverine (2003) #6
That led me to make this final prediction in my Most-Wanted Wolverine Omnibus post:
The book is likely to add Wolverine/Hulk (2002) #1-4 (if it’s allowed as a Marvel Knights series) and Wolverine: Netsuke (2002).
How close did I get? I was one for two on my actual predictions, but my bulleted list timeline was right on the money! Here are the officially announced contents of the Wolverine The Return of Weapon X Omnibus:
Wolverine (1988) #159-189, Annual 2000, & Annual 2001; Wolverine: The Origin (2001) #1-6; Wolverine/Hulk (2002) #1-4; Punisher (2001) 16-17; Hulk/Wolverine: Six Hours (2003) #1-4; Wolverine/Doop (2003) #1-2
I think the lack of Netsuke is more than made up for by this including both Six Hours and Doop plus the guest arc in Punisher. That lessens the burden of extra material to squeeze into the next book, and ultimately the reading order of those series coming after Wolverine (2003) #6 doesn’t matter all that much since they were released alongside that material.
You can see the full reading order of this period in my Wolverine Collecting Guide & Reading Order. Did you have this book on your Marvel Omnibus 2027 Fantasy Draft ballot? I had it at #11, so I’m scoring some major points for this announcement!
