The definitive Hawkeye – Clint Barton and Kate Bishop – issue-by-issue collecting guide and trade reading order for comic books, omnibus, hardcover, and trade paperback collections. Find every issue and appearance! Part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated September 2024 with titles scheduled for release through December 2024.
If there is a single character outside of the holy-trinity of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor who is most associated with The Avengers, it’s Clint Barton as Hawkeye.
Hawkeye began as an early Iron Man villain in Tales of Suspense and so it comes as a surprise to the team in the classic Avengers #16 when he breaks into their Mansion with a request to join (he’s soon followed by fellow former villains Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver).
Despite his unlikely initiation, Hawkeye has one of the longest tenures of any character in the Avengers – and has maybe quit and been kicked out the most of any character, too. He is often represented as the core of what the Avengers are and as a conscience for the team.
In 2005, with Clint out of the picture, a young woman named Kate Bishop took up the mantle of Hawkeye. Kate is nearly the opposite of Clint – she grew up rich and privileged, while he literally joined the circus as a child.
However, their shared grit, marksmanship, and moral compass finally brought them together as partners in Matt Fractions’ remarkable 2012 Hawkeye ongoing.
From there on out, they share the codename.

Where to Start Reading Hawkeye
Where should you start reading Hawkeye? Here are three excellent options for getting started with Clint Barton:
Avengers: Hawkeye (hardcover / paperback)
Do you like reading Silver and Bronze Age comics and want the original scoop on how Hawkeye began? This collect includes key Hawkeye issues Tales of Suspense (1959) #57, Marvel Super Action (1976) #1, Marvel Team-Up (1972) #95, and The Avengers (1963) #189, plus his 1983 four-issue mini-series.
Hawkeye: Avenging Archer
Do you want a big hunk of modern Hawkeye to get to know the current version of the character? This anthology paperback collects a slew of Hawkeye’s appearances after his return from death (or, at least, being wiped from reality).
Hawkeye by Fraction & Aja Omnibus Oversized Hardcover
Go all-in on this definitive and massively-acclaimed take on Hawkeye, which significantly humanizes and humor-izes his life outside of being a superhero. It’s also a terrific primer on Kate Bishop, who co-stars throughout!
If instead you wanted to learn to love Kate Bishop sans Clint, you’ll want one of the following collections:
Young Avengers Complete Collection
This is the entire original run of Young Avengers, which was Kate’s debut. She isn’t the most-major player in this series, but it does establish the prickly, do-it-myself personality that would later blossom under Fraction and Thompson.
Hawkeye, Kate Bishop Vol. 1: Anchor Points
Writer Kelly Thompson has a knack for Kate Bishop’s narrative voice, and here she turns in a perfect blend of Fraction’s Hawkeye and Bendis’s Jessica Jones where Bishop can feel both youthful and like an accomplished hero.
Hawkeye, 2nd Wave Avenger (1964 – 1969)

In Avengers #63 Hawkeye drinks Hank Pym’s special growth serum to become Goliath so he can save Black Widow – but, he’s not so quick to give up the growth spurt or the accompanying new costume at the end of the adventure! This won’t be the last time a different hero adopts one of Hank Pym’s codenames, nor will it be the last time Hawkeye changes his.

Hawkeyes in Marvel Now (2012 – 2015)
After The Avengers movie and Avengers vs. X-Men, Hawkeye became a hugely popular character starring in nearly every of Avengers title! However, the biggest news in Hawkeye’s life wound up being a new solo series. Solo runs for Avengers outside the holy trinity are typically short-lived, but this book by Matt Fraction and David Aja broke out in a big way. Sales increased every month, and in 2013 Aja took home an Eisner award for his artwork.
Matt Fraction’s acclaimed run on Hawkeye began prior to Marvel Now, which can make the stories a little hard to place in relation to AvX and Marvel Now titles. Generally, I assume that much of it occurs, there is a small break for Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run to begin, and then the rest of the series happens before the run-up to Infinity.
Hawkeye appears in several Avengers titles, including supporting in Avengers, Avengers Word, and Avengers Assemble and starring in Secret Avengers.

Collects #1-5. Stars Clint supported by Kate. Also collects a story with Hawkeye and Kate Bishop from Young Avengers Presents #6. [Ed Note: This is about as good as any Marvel TPB gets – action-packed and amusing. Highly recommended.]
While it’s unclear if Avengers vs. X-Men fits before or after the start of this series, the break between #3-4 can likely be aligned with the start of Marvel Now. However, given the relative small-scope issue Hawkeye confronts in #4-5, the start of the galaxy-spanning Avengers 2013 volume could make more sense falling later – perhaps as late as #11.

Hawkeyes in All-New, All-Different Marvel (2015 – 2017)
All-New, All-Different Marvel (ANAD, for short) is the period directly following the 2015 Secret Wars. Most titles began with a eight-month gap between their last action and the new present day, allowing writers to build-in some amount of mystery to their status quo instead of picking up exactly where they left off.
Avengers: Rage of Ultron (2015) OGN HC – Clint as Hawkeye appears as one of the Avengers in this story, which was revealed to be after Secret Wars in continuity after it was published. That places his appearance in the implied gap before the start of the second volume of All-New Hawkeye, and likely makes this his earliest ANAD story.
New Avengers #1-6, 8-12, & 15: Clint is brought in to keep an eye on Sunspot’s Avengers subsidiary during its first few arcs. See Avengers & New Avengers
All-New Hawkeye #1-6: Vol. 6: Hawkeyes
This story intercuts the present day with a potential future for Clint and Kate – which seems like somewhat of a cop-out, since it’s theoretical and may not come to pass. The end of the arc includes some flashbacks to Kate’s pre-hero teen life with her somewhat villainous father. Also collected in oversize hardcover with the prior five issues.
Kate Bishop is also in Gwenpool Special (2016) #1, Patsy Walker, A.K.A. Hellcat! (2016) #2, Old Man Logan #2-4 (featured in #4, which is likely her first canonical appearance after All-New Hawkeye).
Civil War II: See Marvel Universe Events. Clint is part of a pivotal moment of this story in issue #3, which also leads him to be featured (or at least mentioned) across many of the Civil War II tie-ins. The one-shot Civil War II: The Accused fills in the missing action from the end of CWII #3 to his subsequent appearances. Kate appears in Civil War II: Choosing Sides (2016) #2-3.
After Civil War II, Clint moves to lead the title Occupy Avengers through Secret Empire, where he is a major factor in the back half.
Occupy Avengers (2016) #1-4: Vol. 1: Taking Back Justice
Also collects Avengers (1963) #80-81.
Occupy Avengers (2016) #5-9: Vol. 2: In Plain Sight
Secret Empire: See Marvel Universe Events
Meanwhile, Kate Bishop takes over the Hawkeye comic for a delightful, hilarious run written by Kelly Thompson.
