The definitive issue-by-issue comic book collecting guide and reading order for Marvel’s Thor, the Odinson, in omnibus, hardcover, trade paperback, and digital. Part of Crushing Krisis’s Crushing Comics. Last updated June 2024 with titles scheduled for release through January 2025.
The Marvel Comics version of Thor was created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby as a literal interpretation of the Norse god of legend as tied to a mild-mannered human doctor, Donald Blake.
Of all of the founding Marvel heroes, Thor was the one who felt most like a DC hero like Wonder Woman or Superman – an all-powerful, iconic, godlike figure finding his way through a superheroic life in human society.
In the decades since then, the Asgardian god of thunder has become so much more than that. Creators have pulled in more Norse myth as well as invented their own, merged his identity with Donald Blake and then separated them again, put him and all of Asgard through several Ragnoroks, killed him, replaced him, stripped him of his hammer, and made him a king.
Throughout it all, Thor has established itself as a title
There are hundreds of different collections of Thor, especially his original run from 1962 to 1996. However, there are a few specific formats of books that cover large portions of this title, and I’ll cover those first – Omnibuses, Marvel Masterworks, Mighty Marvel Masterworks, Epic Collections, and Essentials.
Then, I will break down every Thor series and appearance issue by issue to explain their reading order and how you can find those comics – both in physical collected editions an donline.

It’s here on Amazon: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thor-Kieron-Gillen-Ultimate-Collection/dp/0785159223/
Might be worth adding, unless it’s there and I missed it :)

You made me do a double-take, thinking I’d missed this (AWESOME) book on the page, but it’s up there! I think the confusion is I have it paired with the Omnibus despite it not being oversized as the fastest way to collect that particular run.
(I talk about my love for this volume all the time, so I’d be horrified to have left it off ;)
Sato says
It’s the latter – “unless it’s there and I missed it”
Nevermind lol
EdOMac says
Just a heads up — Thor by Dan Jurgens vol.3 does not include Annual 1999.
It includes:
THOR #14-17, IRON MAN #21-22, PETER PARKER: SPIDER-MAN #11, and JUGGERNAUT: THE EIGHTH DAY.
EdOMac says
Thor (1998) (Gods and Men) collects Thor #68-79.
The Avengers Disassembled Thor books collect Thor #80-85.
krisis says
Gotcha (on both of those)! Asgard only knows what I was thinking on those, the correct listings are plain as the beard on Odin’s face ;)
EdOMac says
So for those two non-Walt Simonson Thor stories which were left out of the Simonson trades and omnibus, they have both been collected! Just realized:
THOR #356 is in the 2010 Thor vs Hercules TPB, as you noted.
THOR #370 is in Black Panther by Christopher Priest – The Complete Collection vol.3
Cheers!
Jayden Sullivan says
although some solicits claim that thor 2015 vol 4 contains thors 4, im pretty sure it contains the generations one shot
EdOMac says
Thor #370 is actually collected, it can be found in Black Panther by Christopher Priest – The Complete Collection vol.3
EdOMac says
For completion’s sake:
Thor (vol.2) #1-2 are collected into a skinny TPB from February 1999 called Thor: Resurrection. It contains a full page Afterword from editor Tom Brevoort and was priced at $5.99. ISBN 0-7851-0724-X

I just wanted to submit a possible correction. The entry for Volume 4: The War Thor of Aaron’s run says that the contents include issues #20-24 of the Mighty Thor (2015) and issue #4 of Thors. But I’m pretty sure that rather than Thors issue #4, the volume should instead include Generations: The Unworthy Thor And The Mighty Thor #1 (in addition to #20-24 of The Mighty Thor).
Also, thanks for all the work you put into these guides and lists. They are ridiculously helpful.
Markus says
“Last Days of Asgard” should be “Last Days of Midgard” I think :) And apparently the Softcover does include #25, whereas the HC does not??
JB says
Thor: Ages of Thunder includes these four one-shots; Thor: Ages of Thunder One-Shot, Thor: Reign of Blood One-Shot, Thor: Man of War One-Shot, and Thor God-Sized Special. The first three are in the ancient past of Asgard, with only the fourth one being in the modern day, at a time when Asgard was in Oklahoma, Balder wasn’t yet king and Thor hadn’t been banished from Asgard yet.
JB says
For the Thor: The Trial Of Thor book; Thor: Truth of History is told in flashback to Ancient Egypt for the most part with only a couple pages at the beginning and end in modern day Egypt. Thor: Wolves of the North is set during the time of the Vikings. Thor: The Trail of Thor is set during ancient times as does its follow up Thor: The Rage of Thor. The Thor Annual is obviously from 2009, post banishment from Asgard. Thor: Heaven & Earth does appear to be in continuity, the first issue is set prior to Ragnarok, the second is post Ragnarok, the third is difficult to place but probably post Ragnarok and Siege, the fourth issue begins and ends in the modern day with flashbacks to the Viking age.
JB says
Thor: For Asgard is 6 issues, not 7 and it’s also set on an alternate Earth outside of 616 continuity.
JB says
Also, Astonishing Thor happens post Siege and pre Fear Itself, where you’ve placed it, not earlier like you state it might be.
JB says
Deviants Saga, Thunderstrike and Warriors Three are all best read before Mighty Thor #1-6 as they all come before Fear Itself and Mighty Thor #1-6 leads directly on to Fear Itself
JB says
Warriors Three comes before Siege as adult Loki is alive but Asgard is on Earth.
JC Lebourdais says
you are confusing artist Pat Oliffe and colorist steve Oliff.
