On a whim i just selected my entire draft folder of songs and threw them into a WinAmp playlist to be confronted with a whopping 3-hours of audio! And that’s without all of the audio from last year from when i was working on my demo. Right now i’m listening to a sparkling version of me singing Madonna’s “Crazy For You,” but the random assortment of songs has so far included not only some favourites but also songs i haven’t even thought of for nearly half a year. It makes me feel like such a real artist that i have work that i put hours into and then discarded … especially when upon review it really isn’t so horrible. There might even be an update for the often neglected AMkitchen in the works … imagine that!

For some reason “Other Plans” decided to make a comeback today. I must have played it three times to every one repetition of any newer stuff.
It’s funny how i can never tell which of my older songs i’ll develop a sudden interest in; for a while there “Bridge” was the be-all end-all of my musical life, but suddenly (on it’s two-year anniversary, i might add) it has become rather unappealing and i’ve moved on to the next big hit in my discography. Even more frightening: June marks the three-year birthday of “World in My Hand.” Jesus H Christ… my songs are getting old. Watching your own children grow up couldn’t be any worse … because at least children can change and evolve on their own. Songs…. songs just sit there and look all depressed until you do something new to them. Like a discarded rubiks cube. Sometimes you can stare at one of those things for hours and get nowhere, but other times you just pick it up and get halfway to the solution.
Of course… i’ve never solved a rubiks cub – what does that have to say about my little songwriting analogy?
A quick check of Patti’s website reveals that two decent songs were indeed booted from the record to make room for some of the newer material. I pray that i’m just having a terrible day, and that this record will rock my socks off tomorrow, but i doubt it (seeing as i even managed to listen to my demo cd today, which usually bugs the hell out of me). Indicator of the problem at hand? Producer: Freddie Katz. Front Cover Photo: Freddie Katz. I’m not sure why Patti would want someone else so involved in her music after making such a stunning solo debut, unless she’s fucking the guy. The woman’s a genius and she played every damn guitar on her first album, leave her alone!
while i was writing “other plans” i was listening to ani’s “untouchable face.” i was writing these lyrics about hanging on but pushing away in that same tranquil mode that “untouchable face” is in, but when i got to the music that was immediately ditched in favour of a bouncy acoustic thrash. at the open mic last week, in the middle of playing ani’s “gravel,” i realized that “other plans” had become much more a mirror of “gravel” than i had ever intended it to be of “untouchable face.” and now i can barely even play it… does that say anything?
