I tend to move about a year or so behind big web trends. For example, i held off from using frames as a main design element until 1998, when they had already become quite passé. Similarly, i only utilize minimal amounts of JS, just recently began to use tables to better define my pages’ space, and now have begun to use Server Side Includes. Fun, aren’t i? Part of the issue is that i usually hang onto an old browser until the new version becomes the web-standard so that i’m not tempted to immediately design above the display abilities of the browsers that visit me. Being a former Netscape enthusiast (until it outright wouldn’t work and displayed every page i liked to read incorrectly) i never was too aquainted with the beautiful effects of Cascading Style Sheets because Netscape doesn’t display them correctly. Of course, by now any web designer with half a brain is using CSS whereas i can just barely understand what they’re up to when i check out the code. In the end this is all a facet of my DIY (do it yourself) stubborness; i almost totally refuse to let other people lay a hand on my web designs as much as i shun other people’s input into my music. Sure, i might get better even faster if i would open myself up to direct influence more often, but then i would lose the right to claim that my work was all my own. As it is, when someone complements me on this site i know that the only person to thank is me (well.. the folks at blogger as well, but that’s a given) in the same way that i’m the only person to be credited for the overwhelming majority of my songs. So, if you had ever wondering why i’m just a backwards redneck about webdesign, that’s why. Have a nice day.

Ok… i just switched Crushing over to shtml so that i can use SSI and so far it’s running smoothly. The question is… do i leave all my old perma-links the same and let the old html archives stay up? Or, do i change all the perma-links to reflect the shtml and then change all the old HTML archives to redirect pages to point people to the new ones? Ugh…

Yesterday as i was coming home from working at the coffee shop, i saw what i thought was a 2 dimensional cut out of a man in a business suit. I wasn’t exactly sure why there’d be such a decoration in the middle of Suburban Station, but it struck me as whimsical and i continued to walk by when out of the corner of my eye i saw the 2d-man move. As it turned out, he was in the middle of his daily commute, just like myself or anyone else i walked past. But when i looked at him at first, he had no character to him… his edges weren’t rounded and his face was struck in a single expression held as long as my glance lasted.

I think it was just the light. Have you ever noticed that some teevee shows look more like sets with people on them than others? Two that come to mind are Roseanne and Home Improvement. Either because of the lighting or the film used, the actors on both of those television shows never seemed to be a part of their scenery to me … they stuck out just like an actor on stage does, and the burden of suspending disbelief fell upon you as the viewer. Other shows like Cheers and Friends make the environment as much as a character as the actors, and so it seems as though we’re actually watching people living their lives, even though we’re fully aware that it’s a sitcom. In this case, the sitcom has helped us suspend our disbelief.

Even though the man was wearing a business suit and carrying a briefcase, he stood out against the surroundings just like a magnet on a refrigerator. Was it something about him? Or, was it something about me?

Counteracting that positive vibe from yesterday morning, today i managed to miss my first class, so the krisis karma meter is set back to 0. It’s not such a big deal to miss classes in the first week, because you could easily have just dropped or added the class, but since i did neither it’s entirely my fault. My class load looks as though it’s going to to turn out very light this semester… partially because i’m a wuss and partially because of the play. After maxing out on credit hours last quarter to split A’s with B’s, i think i’d rather have it a bit easier and look smarter :)
