For those unaware, Drexel’s New Student Week (three days for new Freshmen, two weeks for me, so i suppose it averages out) is OVER. Also, yesterday was my birthday. Hopefully the combination of these two events has left me with something to say now that i have the time to say it. here goes…

Some people are committed to excellence. We’ve all had teachers, co-workers, and friends who have gone above and beyond the call of their duty to make sure their interests are protected. These people will live on in the memories of those whose lives they affected long after the actual effect has worn away. It seems like you more wind up a person committed to excellence than decide to be one; it just can’t be faked.

However, sometimes a committment to excellence is led astray. Sometime you simply wind up with a perfectionist on your hands who can’t be pleased by anything that you do. Then there is the nitpicker, who is so concerned with the details of a situation that the whole of it is ignored. But, the most dangerous way to stray is that of matyrdom. A martyr is more concerned with holding the world on his or her shoulders than making sure a task gets done, and no matter what happens they’ll take the blame for something. Who would want to just go down for their cause when instead they could don the crown of thorns, strp a cross to their back, and get the Jews to kill them?

The sad thing about martyrs is, they’re not all a Jesus. Some of them are just Apostles who got stoned to death to save them from obscurity. More still barely arrived in sainthood after enduring even worse torture. The rest? They aren’t martyrs. They took the plunge, bit the bullet, went down with their ship, but instead of the Titanic it turned out that they were floating away on the S.S. Minow. And, anyway, even Leo wound up a popsicle, so i think we’d all be better off sticking to the lifeboats.

This is a gasp for air after being held underwater. I’ve never been away from my computer for so long. The last post i made from my home pc was 9/15/200 … long long ago in internet time. Suffice to say, i am deeply deeply entrenched in New Student Week 2000 here at Drexel, and not able to share my every whim and desire with you. I’m sorry! I’m going batty without a place to write down my thoughts. Today i stood inside an elevator and drove it from floor to floor from 9:30 to 4. I had an hour break, in which i sat at a desk and registered students. Dinner involved me not eating dinner at all, and afterwards i met with my team (i love them so much) and then went packing off to the Sheraton, where Drexel has shoved the overflow from the dorms. And there’s more! But, i’ll save those stories for later. Everything on here should be somewhat back to normal starting on the 25th, but don’t expect to see me on PB anytime soon.

Take care.

NSW Day 2: Training isn’t nearly as harsh as we thought it would be. Yesterday i got done by 6pm, but then adjourned to Amy&Renata’s house to gossip, break fire alarms, and re-watch the second tape of Magnolia.

Amy: You’re delusional

Renata: Yeah, but i don’t tell anybody that

They have a cool new roommate (Jill) and a cute little kitty (Zoe), both of whom i had plenty of fun with. I ate a huge tollhouse icecream sandwhich and a pint of Dreamery icecream. Definitely some of the most fun i’ve had in weeks.

As for right now, NSW is on break for three hours while people move into the newly constructed residence hall, so i thought i’d actually post once or twice.
