How i can tell i’m in college: i walked into my kitchen looking to raid the fridge, but before i made it that far i saw a two hour-old piece of pizza and thought to myself “that is exactly what i want right now,” despite the fact that i have about five pounds of various thanksgiving leftovers in my fridge. Yep, college is all about the room-temperature pizza. Mmmmm.

I hate writing a bad song. Not only do i potentially waste some good lines or riffs which i am then reluctant to recycle, but i more importantly loose a chance to voice an emotion. Sure, a lot of my songs cover roughly the same emotional territory, but not many of them come from the exact same inspiration. This summer i very badly wanted to write a song about my first kiss that would say exactly what i felt about it, but in reality it just came off as a too-shimmery Britney Spears b-side. I keep trying to reform it, and it is getting better, but i’m not sure that i’ll ever want to play it in the company of other songs like “relief” and “under my skin.” But, my inability to say or write what i feel, tomorrow’s trio is going to be chock full of good songs i haven’t played yet to make up for missing last week (which was totally unintentional). Ok… that’s all.

If you were interested, the cast page just got slightly updated. Not that anyone actually refers to it … which of course leads to the impulse to include intensely personal details about the people that are featured on it. Amy especially got a revamped entry, at her own request.

The last two tracks on XO are “everybody cares, everybody understands” & “i didn’t understand.” i think that just about says it all.

Elliott Smith is one of those people that craft songs that sound immediately familiar. Of course, i’m not just realizing that now, since i’m already achingly familiar with his last disc, XO. I first came across it while in Anastasia’s bedroom. We’d just sit on her floor every sunday for hours, talking and watching movies and listening to tori and other music. Our big difference in taste was that i liked women, and she liked men. … Musically, that is. But, slowly we infringed upon each other’s taste. Suddenly Anastasia was listening to Dilate, and i was borrowing her copy of XO and listening to it in a stunned silence as i wondered how Elliott found noises for those empty places inside my own heart. Two years later i just bought two of her favourite discs from my senior year, and she’s in college somewhere in New York. And Elliott still invokes those familiar aches.
