Last night rocked. I got sidetracked from coming home when i ran into my Battle of the Bands cohort Kathe, and instead of just grabbing a bite to eat we went out to dinner, and then back to her place to listen to music for hours. We listening to some of her cds, we listened to the three-song mixdown of my demo, and then we listened to tracks from 20 of my recent favourite cds, 10 of which she really liked. I love my success ratio! Afterwards we got drunk and sang along really well to Tori, and then we watched Chasing Amy. I had forgotten how incredibly fucking miserable the movie makes me, and you’ll all have to make sure i never watch it again. Yeah. No rewards for the viewer. Well… except for when Ben Affleck lays one on Jason Lee. That was rewarding…

How do you give up on someone who is in love with you? Shouldn’t that be enough? Or, to quote The Mexican, “When you’re in love, when is enough finally enough?”

Julia Roberts didn’t know the answer, but Brad Pitt got it right on the first try. Selina and I laughed so loud when we heard the question that i think we drew nasty looks from the other people in the theatre; it’s the kind of thing that’s only funny when it seems like the question is being asked right at you from the screen. I guess no one else there was being spoken to…

Wow, that was a long day. I’m not sure where it all went… i ushered for two concerts and talked a little bit to her and wound up in the recording studio engineering someone’s Senior Project.

Have you ever seen the second Batman movie? You know how Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle are dating each other and fighting each other as Batman and Catwoman at the same time? The scene that always stuck out for me is when they’re making out at Bruce’s place and as they grope each other they catch all of the scars that they’d left on each other in their battles. Of course, neither of them says anything since their identities are supposed to be secret.

I was thinking a lot about that scene today. I don’t know exactly why, but it just felt accurate… like each of us had our Superhero selves in public and only ever revealed our secret identities to each other when we were all alone – and now when we’re alone all we can do is poke and prod at each others wounds without the other ever being able to say a damn thing about it.

Does that metaphor work for you? For additional metaphorical material, see Ani DiFranco’s “Superhero” or “Pulse.”

Can i just talk about some of the stuff that makes more sense once you’re actually in a relationship? Good. Okay, first of all, Undressed: that cornball MTV show where lots of too-pretty 20-somethings posing as college freshmen have lots trouble that would be solved if they would just shut up and fuck? Or, alternately, if they had opened up their mouths before jumping into the fucking? Previously the show seemed lame and belaboured, but now i actually get a kick out of seeing how twisted a situation can be before i actually it stops resembling real life. And god knows that’s a pretty twisted place to be…

Other stuff i dig more now? Ani DiFranco’s Dilate as well as most of Out of Range, all of which has stopped just being good music and suddenly is intruding into my life and siding with the players therein. Jagged Little Pill fits neatly into that category as well. Also, erm… i like sappy movies more now, because it’s fun to hit pause and make commentary before the characters do the stupid things you know they’re gonna do anyway.

God, i need to get out more.

There’s really no point in my buying books anymore. Or maybe there is. It’s gotten to the point where purchasing and reading a book nearly equates to buying and watching a movie; i should probably just rent either the first time to see if they’re worth the expense. Reading a book is now totally analogous to watching a movie for me; if i don’t get through all of it in a sitting or two i’m tempted to just give up on it, and if i like it a lot i’ll gladly go back to it as soon as time allows.

I don’t ever remember reading a book twice back-to-back. A book is the sort of thing you have to digest, and let swirl around in your brain until you reconcile it nicely. There’s no point in going back so soon to read each and every one of the words again. Reading is an experience controlled by the reader, and as much as i can stop at a sentence written in Italian to translate it word for word i can just as easily gloss past it as well as the boring chapter that follows. Movies don’t allow such a luxury; movies are a medium that the viewer has no power over. We have freeze frame, and rewind, but we can’t slow the action without distorting the medium in which the story is told

Or, maybe you don’t believe me and you’re pretty quick on the trigger with your slo-mo button. I just read approximately 1400 pages in four days and i’m wholly dissatisfied. 1400 is two days worth, at the most. Or, i could have sat down and watched the three movies back to back in under nine hours. Usually i’d say that i wouldn’t have appreciated them nearly as much that way, but this time i’m not so sure.

Quick and biased remarks on the novels of Thomas Harris: Red Dragon – 6/10, badly plotted and lacking suspense where it should possess it. Silence of the Lambs – 8/10, practically a shooting script and excellently constructed. Hannibal – 4/10, several hours of my life that wouldn’t have necessarily been spent better but that i’ll never get back either. It’s not necessary to read them sequentially, but you should at least watch Silence before reading Hannibal.
