Where does Ben Folds go to with the girl in “Brick?” For some reason i had always assumed it was an abortion clinic, but that’s probably because i listen to way too much Ani DiFranco. Going to an abortion clinic the day after Christmas is a bit morbid … i’m usually out buying bargain ornaments. Is the girl in the song sick? She’s “balled up on the couch,” and he remarks that no one is around to find him out. Of course, would getting a girl pregnant suddenly make her a “brick?” Actually, i don’t think she’s getting an abortion, because… i dunno, would he buy a girl flowers after that? In the weeks to come she proves to be less than okay, and he has to “Tell the truth.” Is she sick? I’m so confused… So, if there are any big Ben Folds Five fans out there who think they know where exactly what’s going on, please enlighten me. Otherwise i’ll just ask Amy when she gets home from home…

Elliott Smith’s XO is now officially my rainy/lonely night soundtrack, especially “Waltz #2” (which comes before “Waltz #1,” for unknown and obscure singer-songwriter reasons). I hope i hear alot more of it, for whichever reason.

But, now that Miss Janet has left my computer, now i’m here alone with Elliott Smith’s fragile voice and lush beatles-esque production. Oh, what will i do with myself now…

Artists who feel the need to include interludes on their discs are just a pain in the ass. If they do like Janet and give them their own tracks they stay conveniently out of the way when you ‘re making a mix-cd, but they are way too meddlesome when you’re stereo is on Shuffle. Of course, having the interlude at the beginning of an actual track just sucks, because you can’t start cleanly with the song itself. Perhaps Lauryn Hill had the better idea, putting the inbetweens at the end of each song on her Miseducation album, which makes more sense in terms of listening and dubbing. Still, i wish the awful little interruptions to the beauty of music could just be ditched. And don’t even get me started on secret songs that are on the same track as the last song of an album…

Track of the day: Janet Jackson – “What’ll I Do (for satisfaction)” ,… meant to post that about two months ago, but now is as good as before. It’s cool to hear Miss Janet in a slightly more conventional band format without even the screeching guitars she’s prone to inducing.
