I don’t like to be sick. I realize that no one does like to be sick, but i dislike it for different reasons than most people. I don’t mind being a little run down or having a slight temperature, but i refuse to let some alien little virus take over the controls of my body for any extended period of time. As such, unless totally incapacitated, i will not cease my daily activities just because i’m feeling deathly and running a 102 degree fever. So, this morning i set off for the coffee shop sporting glands swollen to the size of golf balls and a medium-high temperature… and now it’s gone! Whee!!

Things that make me happy right now: Mac&Cheese (that doesn’t require milk or butter); my crappy stereo (and its five disc changer); my (unexpected) $50 bonus (for multiple record sales days at the shop); not living in a dormitory (and not worrying about getting kicked out for break); my plane tickets to florida (and all of the food that will be bought for me by my relatives there).

I spent yesterday totally away from the computer, and it was agonizingly fun. First i managed to make it to the coffee shop at 6:30 to open with Sarah and Stephanie, who were delighted to have me on board. Opening the store was fun, because all of my afternoon customers were delighted to see me in the morning and all of the morning customers were amazed at the efficiency of this “new” employee. My downfall was that i only accumulated about 4 hours of sleep prior to my barrista performance, so by 11:00 i was so cross-eyed with drowsiness that i couldn’t even count out change correctly. Rather than head home to a well deserved nap afterwards, i was whisked away by mother dearest to go Christmas Tree shopping.

Is there a good reason that my belly button smells of coffee? It’s not as though i was serving it shirtless today. Ack… the smell of that place makes me so queazy … all of the coffee and sweet and bleach seeps into my fingertips as i clean at the end of the day and when i get home i can still smell it even after scrubbing my hands for minutes at a time. Uck. When i used to work in a footwear store the scent of rubber made me nauseous as well. I never got sick from the scents of being a camp counselor though; even the goose poop gets charming after a while when the sun is shining.

It’s funny, but already at 19 everyone looks familiar. The overwhelming feeling i have when i meet people now is not “Oh, a new person” but instead “Oh, someone who resembles person X in Y way.” I think this whole phenomenon first reared it’s familiar head over the summer while i was working at Orientation as a way for me to quickly associate my student’s faces if not their names. Sometimes it’s not even a face that i associate, but a haircut or a behavior, but either way it makes for a very uncomfortable sense of Deja-Vu when i meet new people as i found myself doing last night.
