day in the life

June 3, 2001 by krisis

As much as you’ll catch me on IM in the dead of the night have deep conversations about emotion in high relief and how The David is really looking in two different directions, i am honestly a morning person. The only problem is, you have to find a way to get me out of the bed, into the shower, and then into clean clothes. Then, and only then, am i truly a morning person. Today Kim and I hit the floor of the sparkling new Superfresh down on Deleware avenue not a second later than 8:15, and we were giggling right down every aisle. Somehow i wound up spending $130 on groceries, which makes sense because i’m cooking a huge italian meal tonight and i decided i should start eating breakfast, but it made me feel like much more of a grownup. Not just because i spent all of that on groceries, but i never once stopped to think “if i just starve myself twice as long as these would last i could have a new guitar.” Somehow valuing the experience of trying to operate a self-checkout lane and knowing i could afford whatever the food came to is worth more (i know, it’s blaspheme) than a new guitar (or a second night of Madonna tix…).

What happened afterwards was the real proof i’m a morning person: i stormed into the apartment with groceries and announced to poor tortured Matt that i was defrosting the refridgerator by hand and that he should put on some good music. And, four solid inches of ice later (don’t even ask…) we have a clean empty refridgerator and lots of new groceries and it’s full-on spring and i just feel like someone flicked the little on switch that’s hidden behind my right earlobe and suddenly now i’m all powered up and ready to appreciate something.

All of that in exchange for three hours of sleep. But, it’s not really how much you sleep, it’s when you wake up.

Leaving for work yesterday morning began a sequence of events that would leave me rushing from place to place for the entire weekend with just moments like these to catch my breath; work, rehearsal, dyke march, cast party, sleep, car wash, scavenger hunt, ushering, dinner, sleep, ushering, striking the set. Everything was going just fine until the cast party, during which a combination of all sorts of factors left me dumb and sleeping in a stupor (although i made it back here, in an example of (a very addled) mind over matter). I woke up this morning not hungover but instead still mildly drunk, which made the walk to the car wash an interesting incident. However, totally raising the average estimated value of my day was that fact that Teri decided to come all the way in from Shippensburg to hang out with our chapter of PNE for the day. Seeing as she’s about to disappear off of the face of my earth for three months, i have to say i was happy to see her. But, anyway, somewhere in there i played some hardcore ultimate frisbee, and now i have to run off to see what the rest of the night has in store for me. Should be interesting…

And now it’s today. Or whatever.

In the same way that i ate a whole box of tic tacs last night, i have a huge pillow firmly entrenched on the right side of my bed. I put it there during a cleaning frenzy and didn’t really think about it, and that night when i crashed out i left the pillow exactly where i first put it down. I slept that way for a few nights, easy and peaceful, before i realized that the pillow occupied the exact spot on my bed that Selina did in hers. And, of course, illusions are easy to see through when you know what they’re really made of. But, i slept well last night anyway.

I just ate a whole box of tic tacs. I don’t really know why… i don’t feel especially hungry, but i haven’t really eaten a square meal for a while now so i suppose i could use some snackage to get me up to speed. When i first moved into my house i never wanted to walk all the way downstairs to the kitchen to eat, so i just ate altoids all day. All day. I have to say, altoids are a bit better tasting and more filling then these horrid little tic tacs are, but i don’t especially mind. It’s funny what i’m capable of doing just because i’ve established momentum. Eat a tic tac, eat two, and suddenly i’m eating a box. I need to equip myself with a set of brakes, or else i’ll always be coasting down hills. Or something. Time to open up my second box…

The majority of that prolonged absence was taken up by a lot of traipsing around with Amy & Liz that involved one snowed in basketball court, two trips to 7-11, three slip and fall accidents, and a host of other fun events like Amy kicking snow in my face after i fell on the ground. Afterwards we repaired to Amy’s to eat nachos and watch her Ben Folds Five video, which we do every time i’m over there. There’s so much liquor lying around in her kitchen waiting for tomorrow night i almost got drunk looking at it. She bought this enormous jug of SkyVodka just for us to do shots of, or something. Obviously i won’t be blogging much tomorrow night…
