Crushing Comics Podcast, Episode 0051: This Week in X, 21 April 2021, pt. 1 – Way of X #1

April 24, 2021 by krisis

It’s a special single-issue episode of This Week in X, the first of two episodes for the week of 21 April 2021.

Join Peter, Fariha, Tyler, & Harry as we go deep on Way of X (2021) #1. This book seemed like it would focus on Kurt establishing a mutant religion, but this debut issue proved to be so much me. We discuss Kurt’s doubts, cheap death, failed japes, Dunbar’s number, scathing data pages, offcuts of experience, Crucible aftermath, Kindly Ones, and a SHOCKING final page.

Spoiler warning – we discuss everything about X-Men up to and including comics from this week, as well as other current events in the Marvel Universe.

We’ll be back with another episode for SWORD #5 and X-Force #19.

Crushing Comics Podcast, Episode 0050: Epic X-Men Re-Read – (Uncanny) X-Men (1963) Annual 3 and Marvel Team-Up (1972) #89

April 20, 2021 by krisis

Listen in as Tyler and I re-explore the classic Claremont material, with Fariha reading it FOR THE FIRST TIME!

In this episode we read Marvel Team-Up (1972) #89, a Nightcrawler solo story by Claremont with just a dash of Spider-Man as we learn more about Kurt’s past in the circus and if he can keep his tail to himself.

Then, in (Uncanny) X-Men Annual 3, Claremont writes his first of many fairy-tale send-ups – that also happens to be a cautionary environmental tale and also full of some supple bottoms of the male team members as draw by George Perez.

Finally, in Classic X-Men (1986) #31, Professor X takes out his social class discomfort on a Shi’ar plumber while cosplaying as Captain Picard. Yes, it’s all as weird as that implies.

Also, Peter is full of anecdotes and Tyler tries to make us all cry about fish.

We mostly stay away from spoilers for House of X and Powers of X, though Fariha discusses one of the themes of the Dawn of X without spoiling anything specific.

Crushing Comics Podcast, Episode 0049: This Week in X, 14 April 2021

April 17, 2021 by krisis

It’s This Week in X for 14 April, 2021!

Join Peter, Fariha, Tyler, & Harry as we discuss Children of the Atom (2021) #2 and Wolverine (2020) #11.

For Children of the Atom #2 we went incredibly deep, as this series once again divided our panel like no other! We discussed Avengers vs. X-Men diplomacy, Gabe being more than meets the eye, how countries can export culture (and, vaccines as cultural innoculations), character voices, nuances of layout and coloring, Cats Laughing, and so much more!

Wolverine #11 was full of things we love: Omega Red, Paris, vampire hunting, memos from Sage, Wolverine pinching Beast’s cheek like he is a widdle baby, and more. And yet… we did NOT love it. We talk about why this issue didn’t work for us, and get hyper-fixated on the antics of an undead mosquito.

Spoiler warning – we discuss everything about X-Men up to and including comics from this week, as well as other current events in the Marvel Universe.

Crushing Comics Podcast, Episode 0048: Epic X-Men Re-Read – Uncanny X-Men (1963) #122-124

April 13, 2021 by krisis

Listen in as Tyler and Peter re-explore the classic Claremont material, with Fariha reading it FOR THE FIRST TIME!

In this episode we read Uncanny X-Men (1963) #122-124. The X-Men enjoy a brief respite back in New York, with Storm visiting her childhood apartment only to find it has turned into a drug den. Their downtime is interrupted by Arcade, hired to gain revenge on the team by our favorite platonic life partners Black Tom and Juggernaut.

Arcade is a master of advertising and capture, but his his most-dangerous game really all that deadly? And, why does Colossus nearly tear the team apart before defeating Arcade’s plot with the power of love?!

We also read back-up stories in Classic X-Men (1986) #29-30, and it turns out #29 is an ESSENTIAL Colossus issue!

We mostly stay away from spoilers for House of X and Powers of X, though Fariha implies that we see more of a certain well-disguised villain in the current era.

Crushing Comics Podcast, Episode 0047: This Week in X, 7 April 2021

April 10, 2021 by krisis

It’s This Week in X for 7 April, 2021!

CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of self-harm and suicidal ideation.

Join Peter, Fariha, & Harry as we discuss Marauders (2019) #19 and Excalibur (2019) #20, plus the breaking news of new X-titles debuting in July, August, and September 2021!

Marauders #19 has a lot to say beyond its basic plot of a turf war in Madripoor, and it leads us to discuss continuity as technical debt, class conflicts in mutant society, if the Hellfire Kids can be truly scary, the plight of visible minorities, what’s left behind after colonization and occupation, what it means being born a mutant, and even more!.

Then, in Excalibur #20, we have a serious, personal discussion about mental health, the gender divide in Krakoan mercy, being former kids who move to the Adults Table, how class privilege can affects re-starting with a “blank slate,” and much more.

Plus, what are Leah Williams and Jonathan Hickman writing in the new line-up of X-books?!!?

Spoiler warning – we discuss everything about X-Men up to and including comics from this week, as well as other current events in the Marvel Universe.
