Links are yummy and good for you.

I don’t read MeFi too often, but when i do i get lots of content for my click. Although, i’m sure that a lot of it is true on some level other than the one where Microsoft holds 9-year-olds ransom for stock options, and the incidental research was enlightening. In other news, Dean takes one of America’s more brutal and pointless traditions to task much more succinctly than i have in the past. With medical and scientific support rapidly dwindling, here’s hoping that we’re seeing some progress in the right direction; mutilation does not equal tradition. Meanwhile, KevRock combines my favourite two things in the entire world of the internet: blogging and purity tests. Consider me hooked – and, my score is criminally low just based on the questions posted already. BTW, the real home of purity tests is here, and decidedly not anywhere near here. Speaking of which, at last check this new way to obsess over your popularity if sitemeter goes down says Rabi is just as popular than the bastardizers of the purity test (AKA TheSpark.com). Who knew? Of course, it also seems to be under the impression that i’m more often blogged than In Passing as well as Huny, so maybe there are some kinks to be worked out of the system. In other news, via Rabi’s trim new sidebar links i have found another totally disarming and entirely engaging webpage (because i haven’t found enough of them yet, apparently). Next, Pete over at Dependant Films clues us in on an interesting entanglement between Kevin Smith and GLAAD. I might not be a huge KS fan, but i think he’s in the right on this one. By the way, Jesus was not blonde. Oh, yeah, and my favourite web-game franchise got namechecked in a nationally syndicated magazine. Hits the stands on Monday, check page 73. Rock.

I figure i should actually blog every so often to keep my cred up ;)

Okay, so, don’t kill me for this, but upon a first impression Brian Jacobs struck me as a sort of male Tori Amos still in-utero. He has the same unenunciated pronunciation with a combination of supported notes and airy treads into his higher register, and the sort of plodding momentum of piano Tori’s mid-tempo work demonstrates, and his lyrics are obscure enough to be sure. Think “Siren.” After listening to some of his mp3 tracks i’m hungry to hear a full band behind him, and to learn a bit more. I’m not going to engage in the sort of idle criticism i would usually make at this point, because Brian is much nearer to someone i could imagine myself in the same relative orbit as if i ever got outside this apartment and tried. But, anyway, listen to him when you get tired of my expansive post-25/24 song catalogue. Blogged via JoeyRoo, who links me! Yay!

Wow. I’m of the mind that your first kiss should be set in celluloid in your head to be replayed and replayed until all of the hiss and hum of the wear on the tape overcomes the memory, and you’re just left with a memory of a memory. At the same time, i detest those horrid contrived situations and wish they could all be forgotten about. Of course, if the two intersect…? I don’t know. This whole storytelling binge over at Benjy’s has got me paying rapt attention; and to think he was the one i didn’t like in the first week.

I was walking down my street and it was lit up all shades of sun… twinkling past trees and bare on the cement and reflected off of polished old cars. Out on the porch next to my building someone was eating something with bay seasoning, and the sense-memory association snapped me back to once when i was crabbing with those funny little cages off the side of a pier after fifth grade and the click of their metal against the wooden dock as we set them down and watched the crabs toddle out sideways from within. I associate the smell more with live crabs than with eating them because i’ve never really eaten crabs. Plucking meat out of anything’s shell is a bit too carnivorously aggressive for me… even sliding a tail off of a shrimp is a bit distasteful. The summer after fifth grade i went on “the cruise” with the boat-club that my mother’s boyfriend belonged to… really just a whole slew of tiny personal boats chugging their way down to Maryland and then back up again over the course of a week. At the time it didn’t really occur to me what an odd little vacation it was. My mother had left me alone at my Aunt Susan’s the year before to go out on the cruise with our just found cat Googie, but i wound up (accidentally) kicking out a window in her den door and it was all quite a debacle. The first time i was ever on a boat was a few years before, and it was a house-boat with a living room and oreo cookies and a resident fluffy cat.

I fell for a girl on the cruise and every fictional character i created for an entire year afterwards was named ‘Barbara,” and i’ve never met anyone my age with that name again. When i would chase her in the water she’s just swim out until the deep end and wait until i grew tired of bobbing up and down just by bouncing off of my toes and floating a little. Other than that, all i really remember from the cruise was that it was the first time i danced in front of people and not just with my mother in my own living room. And, i quite liked it. But, somehow i contrived to be sick for the last night’s dance and missed it, i think because i knew she’d be there. The whole trip had this very fraternal atmosphere between all of the boaters and their counterparts at various marinas down the coast. I don’t think i’ll ever do anything quite like it again. Except for those silly butterflies and staying home from the dance to play with my gameboy and watch the stars… i suppose i might contrive that a time or two more in one way or another..

Ken Layne‘s blog name would indicate that he’s another ‘netted boy whose life is a crisis in progress, but in reality he’s an actual journalist of some note and repute who still finds stray time to blog information like how the Blue Meanies got $500k from MCA for free, Coca-Cola propaganda that sounds like it’s should be a parody but is real corporate truth, news of super-intellectual racoons in New England, and pictures of rats whose lives are flashing before their eyes. Gotta love it. Consider yourself my new journalism textbook, Ken.
