I started playing “Hold on Me” and Selina walked into the shop halfway through the first verse. Have you ever played a song written about your ex-girlfriend while you still really liked her in the same room with her after the breakup? Well… you’d think it’d be really fun, but really it was an exercise in subtly changing lyrics to reflect the current situation, and keeping your eyes pressed shut tightly so you don’t have to look at her. After i launched immediately into “Splinter” Selina eventually left the shop, and Gina got me to lay off the mean relationship songs. However, we then played “Under My Skin” again and i performed the “i don’t miss you anymore” extended mix (much to Gina’s confusion and delight). The first time i ever sang the song in this fashion was to Selina when we first started seeing each other, and the “miss you anymore” was my way of telling myself i finally was over Laurel. The demo version is much more conflicted at that point of the song, because it was physically sung to Laurel, who i was over but still very pleased to serenade. The version last night brought me full circle back to sitting in Selina’s dorm room with my guitar, pouring out my heart to her. It was empty for a while, but i hear refills are free.

(changes to be made to UMS: drop backing vocals from all but the following “resisting advances,” “unstylish clothes,” “remember them too,” “they’re under my skin,” “little black dress,” “where we begin… the sin,” “just a kiss,” and from “miss you anymore” through the end. Also, i have to re-EQ the bass slightly, as i’ve received several negative comments about it. further suggestions will be taken into account when i remix the song on Friday. if all goes as planned you’ll have a similar shot at critiquing the mix of every multi-instrumental song on the demo, with “Never Say Goodbye” up next.)

Studio tonight sucked because i hardly got anything done, and ProTools ran out of memory so i couldn’t bring home a demo demo cd as i intended to. However, the songs i got down the past two nights hold up to relisten (although i have to say that some of the excess in UMS and NSG is starting to actually feel like excess), so it looks like all that’s left out of my original plans are decent recordings of “Other Plans” and “Crashing.” However, i had two separate people ask about the studio mix of “Hold On Me” today, so i might record it just for uploading purposes. Any other requests? I only have the studio until Sunday, and that’s going to be a clean-up day, so if there was another song you were hoping to hear in sparkling digital format now would be the time to ask.

On the agenda for tomorrow: make a second attempt at mixing “Under My Skin,” add guitar and bass to “Deadweight,” record “Bridge” & “Other Plans,” & somehow fix “Relief.” Dunno about that last part … “Relief” might just wind up being mixed based on the demo i did of it in October rather than anything played on my new guitar; my old guitar was simply a well of bass noise with very little sissy treble mixed in, and “Relief” plays as very trebly on any other guitar i’ve performed it on. *sigh* Well, if you were hoping for any covers, now would be the time to ask; as of now i might make an attempt at “Tear in Your Hand,” but that’s it!
