Yet another six albums i should have owned years ago were added to my collection today: The Velvet Underground Boxed Set (used in perfect condition for $20, how cool is that?) and Portishead Live at the Roseland, NYC. Portishead is the sort of band i could never get into despite being exposed to them for years, but suddenly they make sense to me. To hear them perform their songs live with a full band, dj, and orchestration is totally mind-numbing. Definitely one of the coolest live ensembles i’ve heard in a long time.

Today is light-on-content day. Tomorrow there will be a Trio, an Eagles playoff game, a recording session, and a fraternity meeting. As a consolation to today i reorganized my entire cd collection. Today feels much better now. Along the way i found out that i bought/obtained 60 discs from last christmas to this one, and (as opposed to a typical buying year) only one of them was a cd single. That means i have over 600 new songs floating around in my collection (although some of the cds were ones i used to have on tape, so the songs aren’t really new). It’s a pretty staggering though, but on a very positive note – i’m starting to feel as though my cd collection is actually representative of cds i like. So, that’s good, even if it probably cost me almost $1000. Wow… i’ve really got to track my spending a bit better this year…

I was just little mister urbanite on our little shopping trip, whipping out credit cards and twenties and intense street navigation knowledge and all that. And i jaywalked like a whore. Philly is just a jaywalking city … there’s no reason to cross politely. None of my friends really grasped that, so it was left to me to lead them across lots of middle-of-the-block crossings with lots of rainy cars bearing down on us like stampeding cattle. Plus i had my scarf all wrapped around my neck and was wearing dark jeans and my faded maroon leather jacket. i’m a city-boy thru and thru.

So, today i lost my mind and bought the two most recent Ben Folds Five and Elliott Smith discs, and the new U2 album. And, like an idiot, i forgot the Joan Osborne album. That means i bought 5 cds, all of which were by men. Yep, hardly a woman involved, except their mothers. That’s a first.

Today was fun. When i only see my mother for two or three days every couple of months, those two or three days contain all of the manic energy that an entire season used to contain. Today we bought lots and lots of cds we didn’t really need, and then ate pasta that we never cooked yesterday. And then i watched fight club.
