Personal

Other than my sudden realization about my new musical project today was incredibly dull. Waking up for a 10am class is only marginally less hard than waking up for a 9am class, especially when you want to drop it rather than walk to it. I conceived of the EP in public speaking class, which could be renamed to “learning things that i consider to be general knowledge,” and played around with the idea for the hour break i had before my next class. Blah… if my days were all like this i’d have thrown myself in front of a moving bus months ago. I’ll try to be interesting in my next post, i promise…

Tonight, rather than blogging, i sat down and hammered out harmony vocals for “Never Say Goodbye” in midi (which involved me correctly writing it out as sheet music first, which is really freakin’ hard). They sound nice enough, but for them to get recorded i have to actually be able to sing them, which is a different problem entirely. I can sing well enough, but when i sing while listening to anything else my range tends to be restricted to notes matching the sounds around me. As such, almost all of my songs have melodies that are directly derived from their chord structure, and visa versa. To dub harmony vocals onto a song i have to hit all of the notes perfectly in regards to length and pitch. Then i have to go back and sing something totally different overtop of myself! I’ve never tried to do anything that provides the same sort of distracting sensation as attempting to vocalize something new while hearing myself sing something old. I have to disagree with what i already sang! Anyhow, i began working all that out tonight, and as you can see it’s not going to get any easier.

Breaking news for those of you who actually listen to my squawking and strumming: I’ll be recording a brand new studio EP tentatively titled sweeter to be released on April10th. The current track-listing is as follows: Under My Skin, Punk, Relief, Angel, Crashing, Deadweight, Lost, & Never Say Goodbye. Yes, i realize that a few songs got excluded, but this is just a tentative list. Basically, i’m too darn impatient to wait until i’m ready to play a whole album and i desperately want to record “UMS” and “Crashing” before they get lost amongst newer songs. So, seeing as i know enough about the studio to record basic tracks as well as overdubs and whatnot, now is the time to put it all to the test! Furthermore, i finally was given access to the ProTools system, which means i might actually be able to smuggle out some MP3’s of my progress in the coming weeks. Please, try to control your bodily function! I know the thought of me singing into an actual microphone is pretty exciting, but you’ve got three months yet before you can hear the final product. Ok? Exciting!?! Whoo!

Okay, so, after further reading the book comes off like an 18th century blog written by yours truly about his latest obsession. As long as i think of the poor bi-polar lad as a former version of myself it keeps things interesting. Of course, i might have to stop employing that little technique once he gets suicidal…

Sweet jesus how i hate classic western literature. i swear… the next book i have to read by a dead white man is gonna get burnt in flaming effigy when i’m thru with it. Between the general ignorance (in all senses of the word) of many works that aren’t as traditional or widely translated and the nearly total exclusion of female authors, i have never enjoyed pre-20th century european lit and probably never will. So, of course, what’s my first class M-W-F? 10am, Masterworks of Western Lit! Aside from the infinitely boring reading (averaging to almost a dreadful book each week, which i don’t really mind), my teacher seems to be quite batty. Two quality comments she made on Monday are as follows:

Bat-Woman – I may not be a math professor, but i can do my share of calculations. You know, i had to tutor all of my children in that sort of thing when they were in school. I was always especially good at fractions and percentiles. My son never understood those. They really pushed those fractions in grade school back then. Do you all know fractions?

Bat Woman – You had “issues” scheduling the class? Young people have such an interesting way of using the word “issues” nowadays. I don’t think it’s supposed to mean “intangibly unidentifiable problem that i can’t quantify but is certainly very present.” I could be wrong, though…

She actually doesn’t come off as especially old or patronizing – instead it’s more like quaint and whimsical. She actually managed to hold my attention the whole class, even while i was searching my backpack for something i could use to light my copy of the sorrows of young werther on fire with. Someone said he felt the book (a collection of semi-fictional letters from a “indolent and insufferably well-read” young man who’s obsessed with a remarkable young lady) read a lot like a personal webpage and i managed to LOL heartily before cringing when i realized how right he was. Dear god, please tell me i’m more interesting of a sap than young Werther. … ugh.
