I have to say that i’m with Re on this one. While BlogSpot is a terrific idea and opportunity for folks who don’t want to go through all of GeoCities BS to get a webpage, but all too often it’s just a stagnant pool of unimportant and uninteresting blogs. It seems to me that any halfway decent BlogSpot blogger would get snapped up by a domain as soon as they found a few visitors, unless they wanted to stay at BlogSpot for some reason. I personally grabbed Brant as soon as i found out he didn’t really want to stay on at the Spot, and would do the same for any other blog i read regularly and enjoyed. While trolling around to all of the domains for hosting is tedious and rather rude (trust me on this one), getting people like Re or I to read you is a simple thing if you’re interesting, and hosting can’t be too far behind. I think the issue is that BlogSpot makes it too easy to start a blog … so that it really doesn’t take any planning or ambition or thought or anything of the like. At least going through GeoCities forces you to monkey with the FTP settings long enough to decide what you really want to do with your time.

My point? Firstly, i’d blame a good bit of the Blogger overinflation on BlogSpot, which means it’s their own fault (maybe they should just start charging for Spot to make their money back…). Secondly, it seems like BlogSpot is a glut of a lot of uninspired people, and the inspired ones get snapped up pretty quick once they establish their own voice. So, … this isn’t an invitation to inundate me with hosting requests, but if you’re on BlogSpot and you don’t like it there, just know that all you need to do is find your groove and a small audience before your time there is over.

Apparently i was supposed to “hunker down with a pair of headphones” and closely examine Kid A, but i frankly don’t have the time. I’ll be the first to admit that there are hundreds of albums that i would fall in love with if given the chance, but when artists like Sarah Harmer can grab me in a half a listen i don’t know why i should waste my time on an album that i spent hours listening to while only ever really liking two or three songs. It’s one thing to tell me that i shouldn’t just discard an album after a single listen, but i gave Kid A more than just a casual listen at work (where i’ve discovered tons of my current favourite discs, from Ben Folds to Portishead) and it never took hold. Maybe i’m just too into riffs and songs that can be broken down to a single acoustic guitar; god knows i loved Pablo Honey from the first time it ever entered the shop’s disc changer. or, maybe i just hated kid A more and more as i found out from Pablo that Radiohead really was the next best rock band and that they obviously failed us horribly before they could ever prove their point. Or something? I dunno.

Proving that a general public of music fans don’t have to be tone-deaf idiots, Village Voice has released their top 40 albums and singles of the year as voted on by subscribers. Singles really aren’t too entertaining to me, but i was very entertained to see PJ Harvey edge out Radiohead by barely 30 votes for the #2 slot of the year. The PJ album beats Kid A hands down any day, but Radiohead seems to win on every list because of more promotion and a bigger American fan base. Isn’t it sad when the popular unpopular rock bands drown out all the good ones? Anyhow, my faith in music has been reaffirmed by the fact that enough people ignored the knee-jerk reaction of voting for Radiohead to nominate PJ Harvey for praise. Otherwise, i was happy to see Aimee Mann win over Madonna, but frowned when i saw U2’s massive failure All That You Can’t Leave Behind garner more votes than the two ladies got combined. Finally, hip-hop favourites Jurassic5 found a spot on the countdown only one vote higher than Philly’s own Marah, whose album might not be amazing – but it’s definitely Philly. Like i said … this just proved that there are some actual music fans out there. And, with this year booked with releases from Ani, Weezer, Garbage, and Tori Amos so far, it looks like us music lovers are in for quite a ride :p

krisis: Argh…. i need to join a band. I have no motivation by myself. I’m gonna start a band while on co-op

amesdevil: i’ll learn to play guitar for you baby.

krisis: Whoo!

krisis: Gina’s got the electric now … all we need is a bass player and a drummer

amesdevil: dude i so wish i was talented i want to be in a band.

amesdevil: if i learn a few chords you should take me in. i’m good for a joke and i’ll make you all look real good when were on the cover of rolling stone.

amesdevil: pleeeeeeeease

amesdevil: i’m being serious. i own an accordian. show me some love.

krisis: Dude, i think it’s in the cards for me to be the talentless one in the band…

amesdevil: i’ll be a fly girl.

krisis: Can’t you learn to play drums???

amesdevil: drums?

amesdevil: how hard is a bass?

krisis: Not too hard. At first you get to play all roots.

krisis: Fast fingers needed, tho

amesdevil: i have the fastest fingers this side of the mason dixon line.

amesdevil: i’m down right john cusack being john malkovich fast.

amesdevil: i was supposed to be a pupetteer.

krisis: LOL

krisis: I’ll bring my bass and amp over sometime for a jam

amesdevil: YES

amesdevil: do it.

amesdevil: i can carry a tune too. well enough to be backup! come on! i love you more today than yesterday (nudge nudge)

krisis: Erm…. why does this feel like behind the music waiting to happen?

amesdevil: because we’re gonna be huge.

amesdevil: i’m talking rolling stones.

krisis: Here i thought it was because of the alchoholism inherent in our plan…

amesdevil: we’re gonna be bigger than god!

You really know your brand name is totally proliferated when any similar product is referred to by the general populace by your trademark. For instance, on my last day at the coffee shop my co-worker Sara asked me for the Windex. Now, we’ve never had Windex for the entirety of my time there, and we didn’t have it that day either. What we did have was bluish-green glass and surface cleanser in a squirt bottle, which basically equates to Windex. I got it for her without missing a beat, and didn’t even think about it until later.

My personal favourite example of this phenomenon is in tampons. When i was growing up the only brand of tampons ever to be seen in my house were Tampax tampons, and to this day i honestly don’t know that i could name any other brands. In conversation, i refer to singular “tampon” as “tampon,” and small groups of “tampons” as “tampons,” but any significant grouping or package of tampons is referred to as Tampax – because that’s the only way i ever knew them growing up.

Wow… now there’s a story about condoms and about tampons on the main page at the same time. Search engines are gonna love me….
