Well, after a two hour wrestling match with “Tear in You Hand,” i’ve come to the conclusion that not all ideas which begin in my head wind up sounding right once outside of it. Just like the piano in “Crashing” (which sounds quite lovely on it’s own, but clashes like hell with the guitar), an all-me version of “Tear in Your Hand” seems like it would sound cool, but it really really doesn’t. The song is at once too low and too high for me, and even though the microphone generally makes up for what i lack in range, i just can’t carry the song with any kind of enthusiastic tempo. So, it’ll stay on the tape for posterity, but i think i’m done with that little experiment. So… um… did i have something else to record?

I had totally intended for this Demo to be an EP (extended play). In the olden days, they were sorta like ultra-singles that had five or six songs on them. EP’s are a rarer thing these days, mostly showing up as ultra-long singles or as inbetweener albums for indy bands (though i have a definite recollection of a Spice Girls EP coming out a year or two ago).

Anyhow, my demo was meant to be six to eight songs, so i figured that even at eight it would be short enough to be an EP, and so it’d be an EP. Of course, now it’s up to eleven songs, and i’m still working on a few on the side. Sure, i could still call it an EP, but it’s a full length album if i stick with the songs i’ve got. But, i don’t want it to be a full length album – the whole point of this was to focus on a small group of songs and make them really good. What i forsee happening is me recording what will amount to an hour of material, mixing it down in several variations onto several CDs, and then bringing it home to assemble the disc there. Of course, this all has to happen in a week or two, which means i have to figure out how the hell i can get more available memory onto freaking Pro-tools so i can mix more than one song per cd… blah. eight more minutes of formatting…

(if you were wondering, i’m back in the studio to experiment a little before i clean up tomorrow, and i’ve got to wait 20 more minutes for my stupid ADAT tapes to get done formatting. I swear… if i ever do this again, i’m gonna buy a fucking gross of pre-formatted ADAT tapes. And there’s gonna have to be a fridge in here, because i’m always starving. Argh. 15 more minutes…)

I’ve been sleeping horribly lately … i’m always in bed by 1:30 at the latest, but i just can’t get good sleep past eight or nine in the morning. This won’t continue to be a problem, since i’ve got to be at work at 8:45 on Monday, but it’s bothering me anyway. Is it just that i’ve become so regular in my sleep cycle that i only really need seven or eight solid hours a night, and anything beyond that is extraneous, even if i’m convince i’d like to have it? I dunno… i’m just so used to using up every spare sliver of sleeping time i can lay my hands (and the rest of me) on that i’m fascinated by not needing it. Maybe this means we’ll be seeing some more morning blogs from me as my job in the Admissions Office progresses…

Isn’t it funny what dreams can reveal to you? As much as they’re random and they shift scene and story wildly from one moment to the next, sometimes you find out things about yourself you were never really sure of. Because, you can repress something you’re feeling all of the day, but that whole time it’s living in your unconscious and awaiting its escape at night. I suppose that’s how i sometimes get work done in my sleep; if i’ve been worrying enough about writing a paper during the day at some point in my dreams i start writing an outline. But, i wasn’t really talking about academia.

I didn’t have the slightest hint of a crush on Laurel until i dreamt about her. One night she was at the center of my dream, smiling and perfect, and in the dream i wanted nothing more than for her to like me … and when i woke up the next morning i started to feel the same way. Did the dream decide on my crush for me, or did i already know how i felt and the dream just opened it up? We all know about the historic proportions the crush took on after it conception, so obviously my dream was right on some level… but which?

I had some revealing dreams last night that told me just where my priorities lie, and i think i was a bit surprised by them. Plot motivation, or reflection of the inner soul? Hard to decide when you don’t even know what’s going on when you’re awake. And god knows i never do…
