The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula Power Rankings – Season 2, Episode 1

November 4, 2017 by krisis

Your eyes do not deceive you – I’m back, back, back, back again with more drag power rankings for you!

What rankings? Well, even though RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3 does not debut until January, it’s no longer the only drag show you can stream to the comfort of your own couch.

Dragula Season 2Hennies, please let me introduce you to Season 2 of Dragula – the search for the next drag super monster! This new season is free to watch on World of Wonder’s YouTube channel!

I’ve loved horror even longer than I’ve loved drag, ever since the first chapter book I ever read was a children’s version of Dracula. Unfortunately, the modern horror landscape tends to be focused on gore and jump scares, and not a lot of the macabre suspense I dug as a kid.

Dragula brings that creepiness and sense of macabre – along with the heaping of camp that comes with a great drag performance.

Rather than preparing for an outlandish challenge in each episode, contestants prep a horrific look that adheres to a specific scary theme – like zombies or sea monsters. Then, rather than present the look on the runway, the queens bring their them to life on a genuinely scary floor show that’s sometimes in a challenging environment, like the middle of the desert!

Finally, and I do mean finally, there are no lip syncs for your life here. Queens are eliminated via Extermination! This season, they first face their fears in a frightening challenge against other low-ranking queens. Then, the bottom queen (or queens!) films her own creepy, campy death scene at the hands of hosts The Boulet Brothers!

The queens of Season 1 turned out some amazing looks despite the show’s low budget. This first Season 2 episode is worlds different – it’s shot in much higher quality, and the queens all bring highly-detailed horror looks filled with prosthetic make-up and practical effects.

Enough explanation – let’s get to the show and the rankings! This week each queen was tasked with turning out a horrific, Hellraiser-inspired Cenobite – you probably know the most-famous one as “Pinhead.” Cenobites are sadomasochistic extra-dimensional beings who take the shape of humanoids whose bodies are consumed in an endless state of half-torture, half elaborate art.

Fan-Casting RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 4

October 28, 2017 by krisis

Last week, RuPaul announced nine of the ten queens for Season 3 of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, but the season itself is still months away.

What to do in all that unfabulous down-time?

Your first impulse might be to speculate on that final, unannounced queen. I’m already thoroughly spoiled, but here’s a non-spoiler post if you want the odds on who that missing queen might be (plus, thoughts on who’ll sashay away first and who could win it all).

With that mystery already considered, the next most-obvious is, “Who could wind up on All Stars Season 4?”

These queens are not only some of the fiercest we still haven’t seen back for a repeat engagement, but also some of the most-deserving of the major profile- and fandom-boost queens get when they return for a turn on All Stars.

Plus, many of them complement each other’s stories despite being wildly different queens from different seasons.

Are you ready? Let’s get All-Started! [Read more…] about Fan-Casting RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 4

RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Power Rankings, Season 3 Pre-Season RuVeal!

October 21, 2017 by krisis

It’s time… time for more fabulous drag queens!

That’s right, last night RuPaul took the to the airwaves to announce an all-new cast of nine queens for RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3, which is set to debut in January.

While the past two seasons of All Stars heavily featured queens that reached the finals, this cast doesn’t have a single Final Three competitor in its rank.

If these aren’t the most glittering of all-time drag stars, then what is the unifying theme of this season of All Stars? It could be “Ru-Grets.” In the case of over half of these queens, RuPaul could credibly claim that she has since had second thoughts about the “Sashay Away” that lead these queens to make their exits the first (or, in two cases, second) time around.

How well will these return queens fare in glamorous combat based on what we’ve seen of them in past seasons and in their brand new video packages? Keep reading for as I rank the house down to assess the chances of each of these queens to strut into the Hall of Fame alongside Chad Michaels and Alaska Thunderfuck 5000.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Power Rankings, S09E12 – “Category Is”

June 10, 2017 by krisis

This week the world got flipped turned upside down in more than one way.

First, RuPaul made the unprecedented decision to go with a final four queens in the finale!

If you’ve been following my rankings, you’ll know I’m pretty pleased with the development, as I’ve been shuffling the same four queens back and fourth in the top four for weeks now.

However, the other thing that feels totally flipped tonight are the rankings themselves! I feel like we’re completely topsy turvy compared to what the queen’s average rankings from the season were telling us coming out of last week.

I got the distinct sense tonight that the queens are no longer competing against each other, but battling against themselves to turn the best version of their own take on drag. As such, I’ll be grading each queen individually in their own 50 point scale based on their original song verse, their choreography, their dance outfit, their final runway look, and their brief speeches.

No points will be awarded for the four-way lip sync because nobody cares. [Read more…] about RuPaul’s Drag Race Power Rankings, S09E12 – “Category Is”

RuPaul’s Drag Race Power Rankings, S09E11 – “Gayest Ball Ever”

June 3, 2017 by krisis

It’s my favorite every-season episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race – the Drag Ball – and this year’s Gayest Ball Ever did not disappoint!

(How could anything be a disappointment when it involves sexy unicorns?)

Our consistent finale foursome absolutely delivered in every look without a single fail amongst them, and it made for some very interesting final jockeying in the rankings after last week and before the final elimination next week.

Because this episode was all about gag-worthy looks, I’m going to rank each of the three ball looks individually before recapping the queen’s overall power ranks! I won’t bother ranking our departed queen since she was the worst in every look.

(It’s not shady if it’s true.)

Look #1: Rainbow-She-Betta-Do

If this was any other group of queens we’d be at risk of being pounded over the head with the most rainbow-y rainbow looks that ever rainbowed, so it was a pleasant surprise to see all four of these brainy queens depart from the expected color spectrum in their own way.

1. Sasha Velour

I was living for Sasha’s deconstruction of the rainbow!

Sasha Velour’s color-blocking approach to wearing the rainbow was a genius turn, and her tailored skirt set with green leather gloves and Dorothy shoes was gorgeous. That she had a tiny rainbow house tucked beneath her red hat (wrapped with fabric from her cowgirl costume!) just sealed the deal of her outfit’s excellence.

2. Shea Couleé

Shea’s pastel graffiti rainbow dress might go down as the most controversial look of the entire season … at least, for me it will.

There’s no denying the cut and silhouette was high fashion, but was it rainbow bright? Honestly, I was getting “dirty sofa” from it way more than “rainbow,” especially from the structured top.

Yet, this is an instance where I can tell my read is a total mismatch with the judges – Shea’s desaturated take on rainbow was clearly a hit with the panel. [Read more…] about RuPaul’s Drag Race Power Rankings, S09E11 – “Gayest Ball Ever”
