Packed Like a Rat

January 15, 2005 by krisis

The only lingering symptom of my sickness is that my ears (well, in actuality, my eustachian tubes) are quite filled with the sort of head-cold detritus that helps to usher out something greater, the result being that when i speak it sounds as though my voice is coming from behind a closed door about ten feet behind me. I’m hoping this little issue will clear up on its own, as the only medical solution i’ve found so far involved putting small holes in my eardrum, which i am not in the slightest bit keen on.

Emerging from sickness makes me want to also, in parallel, emerge from mess – partially because i have a medieval belief that little fever imps tend to emerge from mess, but also because the listlessness of sickness tends to invite messiness. (Thus, if you believe in fever imps, sickness is self-perpetuating). I made a solid run at organizing my desk, which had become even more cluttered than usual with the addition of iPod implements. However, as per my usual failed routine, i have become stuck upon my computer.

The impediment is threefold. First, i never finished transferring Uprush.org to my new host at the end of November, because i was worried that I hadn’t quite backed up my hostees files perfectly. Well, now, $60 in redundant hosting later, i find that i don’t particularly care (and i did it twice, anyhow, they’re probably fine). At worst i stand to annoy two particularly good real friends and one particularly favorite net friend by bunging this up, but seeing as they have been staying for free since various points stretching back to 2000, i think they can withstand this one possible disappointment.

(Did i rationalize that well enough?)

The second impediment is that my once shiny-and-new harddrive has nearly reached a state of teeming density between my compulsive music-collecting habits and my impulsive mixing habits. I have been flirting with buying an external harddrive for several months, but after an extensive web-shopping initiative this week i have discovered that for every two good reviews you read about any of them there is at least one about permanent file loss. Seeing as i’m looking to entrust my precious music collection and my irreplaceable mixing to one of these potential-digital-life-wreckers i find i suddenly have the coldest feet possible. Advice appreciated, via email.

Finally, my bookmarks. Oh, my bookmarks. No matter how tidily i try to organize them the web is vastly greater than my organizational acumen. Not to mention the nearly hundreds of links i have flagged for blog inclusion which in fact saw no such limelight.

So yeah, the point of this post was, here comes a bunch of out-of-date linky posts. Have a nice Saturday.

All I Wanna Do

December 1, 2004 by krisis

Someone has to remember to remind me that, the next time I’m stalking someone famous, that I should super-hydrate myself with over two gallons of water every day – because, apparently, flushing out all of my electrolytes will increase my nerve conduction velocity, thus allowing me to establish telepathic communications with a starlet of my choice.

This concept excites me, as my daily consumption means I’m halfway to the hydration goal already. However, contrary to statements in the article, I like to believe the communication would be one way so that I could just beam every inane thought I had directly into my obsession’s head. It’d be like having my own personal broadcast station directly into their brain.

Or, hey, I could just kidnap them and force them to read my web page!

It’s not supposed to look good, it’s just supposed to look different than that powder (oh my god if i have to see it one more time i’m going to gouge my eyes out) blue from the last layout. I still have about 800 things to fix, but at least everything works again.

Actually, this is pretty similar to CK’s original layout. Full circle, or plain lazy?

Please, spare your comments for another day.

Issues, Problems, &Concerns

November 2, 2004 by krisis

Sorry for all the confusion as of late; the site was replaced with a splash page for some of last week and then disappeared entirely for a day this weekend as i migrated DNS servers, Blogger’s post-by-email feature seems to be on a two-day lag, and its phone-posts are coming out as garbled remixes.

I’m taking the day off on Friday to fix, amend, redesign, and get all of my internet life back in order (and maybe finish a Trio). Hang in there.

Emptiness vs the Slim Grey Book

October 25, 2004 by krisis

For those of you who are slightly new to this whole shebang, you should know that Trio has effectively become my get-out-of-blog free card. How it works is, basically, I lay my artistic soul bare for you in a 10-12 minute concert that, despite its sound of carefree ease, involves hours of sweat, profanity, and occasional blood to produce. Flush from my artistic efforts an enamored with my new tuneage, I typically let Trio sit at the top of the page for a week (or more) so that my barely-existant fanbase has no trouble locating and clicking upon the special feature repeatedly to satiate their listening desires.

Right.

In related news, I’m having trouble writing about anything lately, because I don’t know what to write about. I am happy. I am sedate. I am routine. These are the makings of a dull, repetetive folk record, not my next rock opus.

Last week I finished my book of lyrics.

I feel just as odd reading that sentence as I did shutting the book last week. The book, my book, that slim grey volume I bought my first week of college, and furiously jotted into that week after I had my first drink, is finally finished. It’s over. Done. Complete.

What’s funny is that I didn’t even know it was full. I knew I had about a dozen blank pages left, and I had been scribbling songs out elsewhere, on other pads, so as not to put any irrelevant junk-lyrics in my book. When I finally piled all of my scribblings up for transcription I realized I had more than enough to complete the book. Enough, in fact, to make a decent start on a new book.

Not only is it full, but the last song that would fit was “A Little Bit,” the (bouncy, self-depricatingly optimistic) song I wrote the day before I moved out of my college apartment – the perfect bookend to “Crashing,” the (plodding, drearily pessimistic) song I wrote after my first college party.

Paging back through favorite songs and discarded lyrics, I realized that I can’t really claim that all my good work came from conflict or tension. “A Little Bit” came from an almost perfect zen, “So Hard” came from a poetic IM conversation, and “Punk” came from out of nowhere. Lately I have mistaken a reluctance to write something for an inability to write anything, but maybe it’s for the best – I have songs I’ve never really finished, or never really learned – why am I in such a rush to add any more?

Anyhow, I need to decide what my new book (my third) will be, so I can move on with my life and writing.
