I just did the most violent thing… picked up a pair of scissors and chopped off my hair. When it was long… a ponytail creeping down my back… it didn’t really matter if i cut a half inch or so off of the end to keep it looking fresh. But, ever since i did the big chop-off in august (it all came off) i’ve been saying that i want to get to a moderate length and then scale back to something short but hip. I somehow managed to get there all on my own, with all of my adorable curls piled on top of my head in some sort of hippy afro while i was down in Fl. But, ever since that one good hair day, it’s been plainly too long to get piled on my head, and it was weighing all of the curls down so that all i was left with was friz. Today i jumped in the shower and ran my hair through it and thought … “maybe just clip the ends a little.” When i got out of the shower, the resolve had turned to something more like “make sure it won’t get into my eyes.” And then it became…. get this junk off of my head. A quick jog to Amy’s later (she cleaned up the back of it) and now i have an impromptu cut for the New Year. Not nearly as sexy as the hip style i managed to get last year on the Eve, but it’ll do. The violence felt good.

I tried to record something… really, i did… it’s all shit. If i could have made it through any one song on any given take, the Trio would have been “Silent All These Years,” “Untouchable Face,” & “Stupid Girl.” But, it’s not, because i suck. Go listen to a cd.

If i stopped blogging about all the things i needed to clean up, i could probably get them clean. In fact… generally whatever i’m whining about could be fixed simply by replacing the whine-time with some action. … So… don’t expect a change in the level of whininess or anything, i’m just mentioning it, that’s all.

I never wanna retune my guitar again. Ever. I don’t know what got into me, but last night after i got done chatting with Re i was listening to a solo recording of Peter Mulvey‘s “Grace,” and i suddenly decided that it would be fun to figure out how to play it. Of course, “Grace” occurs in the tuning CFCFAC, while a guitar starts off in EADGBE. So… that took about a half hour in and of itself, and after that i still had to figure out how to play the song. It was here that my semester of aural skills kicked in, and i easily found some basic notes that had been eluding me on all other occasions of toying with the song. However, the problem with Peter Mulvey is often not finding what notes he’s playing, but where he’s playing them. I’m quite sure i nailed down his pattern on the main riff, but past that i have all the right notes in all the wrong places. Compare: me vs. Peter.

Achieving that first relative victory, i decided to move on the the more impossible, “A Better Way to Go,” which i have seen Peter perform live sitting as close as i am to my computer without being able to play it afterwards. Happily, last night was one of my so-called “magic ear” nights, and the song was hardly even a challenge … i got much closer to the actual sound of it than i did on “Grace,” though i can’t hardly play the scales that he uses inbetween chords. Compare: me vs. Peter.

As a result of all of this fooling around, i think my legendary page of obscure guitar chords (Tori, Ani, Mulvey) is going to finally make its appearance on Uprush any day now, with some fun new additions. WheE!

Now there’s two of them… i mean who stands in front of a window for twenty minutes having a conversation? I at least sit down in front of the window half nude, rather than standing (and if you were wondering about the logistics of it, we have lower ceilings than the houses across the street, so my third floor apartment is lower than theirs (thus they can see into mine)).
