Elliott Smith is one of those people that craft songs that sound immediately familiar. Of course, i’m not just realizing that now, since i’m already achingly familiar with his last disc, XO. I first came across it while in Anastasia’s bedroom. We’d just sit on her floor every sunday for hours, talking and watching movies and listening to tori and other music. Our big difference in taste was that i liked women, and she liked men. … Musically, that is. But, slowly we infringed upon each other’s taste. Suddenly Anastasia was listening to Dilate, and i was borrowing her copy of XO and listening to it in a stunned silence as i wondered how Elliott found noises for those empty places inside my own heart. Two years later i just bought two of her favourite discs from my senior year, and she’s in college somewhere in New York. And Elliott still invokes those familiar aches.

Parades are scary things to be a part of, especially in the cold. Especially on the day that comes after the biggest drinking night of the year. Especially when you wake up cold on the floor at 4:45am after having slept through awful snoring all night. Let me tell you, i’ll never look at a squirrell in the same way again…

Meanwhile, i had to wake up at 9am this morning to attend a “balloon training” to prepare me for my service in the Philadelphia Boscov’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (older than the New York one, i might add). A bunch of Pi Nu Epsilon people volunteered to carry a balloon, and we got Rocky of Rocky & Bullwinkle! And he’s “parade element #69!” Yeah, we’re pretty juvenile. Of course, we were a hell of a lot more collected than the Union members and various white trash that were also there today. Most of them couldn’t figure out how to arrange themselves beneath the balloon, and nearly killed us in line for lunch. There was one of those redundant loops in the line which really just caused more entanglement and frustration, so when PiNu got to the loop we stopped and waited for the loop to clear so we could have a straight line. Of course, this meant that the 30 or so people behind us had to stand still for about 15 minutes (though, since they weren’t in the loop they could observe what was going on in the line, instead of being shoved into a corner). The snappish little bitch at the head of that section was convinced we had stopped short to let more people in front of us, and repeatedly tried to insist that students taking the elevator’s up to their design studios were in fact trying to cut in line. Finally, the loop evaporated, and we stepped forward into the newly straightened line, at while point the entirety of the people behind us rushed forward to fill the loop that we had just eliminated, somehow equating their needless movement to getting closer to the food. Which, trust me, they weren’t.

At the very start of the party, i turned to Elise and said “I’m quite sure that i’m going to be severely embarrassed at least once tonight. It might be my fault, but i know for sure it’s going to happen.” Obviously i’m mildly psychic; however nothing is embarrassing if you choose not to regret it.

About an hour later i had $1.10 in my underwear. Also, i’ve never had my nipples pinched by so many people in one night. But, i digress…. apparently one of the ways not to come on to a good friend of at least a year is to ask her how much she’d want for a lap dance ($20), and then fish that out of your pocket and put it in your mouth. The only response i got was “Peter, take that out of your mouth, do you know where that’s been?” Speaking of which, that dime wound up somewhere other than my underwear at the end of the night, but i was forced to retrieve it myself.
