So, anyway, tonight wound up being rather interesting, in a nondescript fashion. It was opening night of the Fall Drexel Player’s show, so i put in an appearance there along with Ariel and Elise, who thoroughly enjoyed both short plays (both Tom Stoppard’s). I love to bring people with me who get all the jokes… it makes me feel smarter!

I babysat some people on acid once. That is… i babysat them, and they were on acid. I don’t know exactly how it all wound up starting, but i was so interested in watching them, as if their outsides were going to churn and reshape the same way their vision did. And, that night i truly came to believe that drugs are all in perception. There came a point when my sleepless haze mixed in with their ramblings and i opened my eyes and saw what they saw. Not in the vivid life-life colour that they described… but just the possibility. Yes, the wall was dancing like a ghost under a sheet. Yes, those lights left trails like a comet. But, eventually i fell asleep.

I wish someone was taking video of my first kiss. It’s like i lose a little of the image quality every time i play it back in my memory, until finally i’m just imagining it. Instead of seeing her face draw close i just imagine us in a pose like any barbie and ken doll can achieve, substituting my idealized picture for what actually happened. Maybe it was awkward instead of artful, but that momentary pause that came with the awkwardness meant everything, and without it i don’t have anything left but the trace left from the words she whispered in my ear. They’re still ringing.

After that the night just got rather random. Elise and I spoke to Ariel briefly after the show, and he told us to meet him at the cast party at 4am, when they’d be done striking the set. Which left us with about four hours to kill. First we attended a drunken dorm room bash where i was aghast at the amount of making-out that was occurring until i was informed that all the couples were really couples. After that there was some french homework, a discussion of the history of theatre, Festivus ice cream, and a guy from my senior prom table. Eventually we did wind up at the cast party, where i was so tired i could barely keep up my facial communication skills, let alone my verbal ones. Ariel arrived, we chatted with him, and then left. Elise and i parted ways at her apartment (after i thanked her for baby-sitting me through a night at Penn) and i walked home, occasionally pretending i could fly.

They’re taking apart my radiator now. For a while it was just incessant clanging of a chisel against a metal joint. At first it was the most jarring noise in the world, but soon it became as comforting as a favourite song; i barely resisted turning on my microphone to catch a snippet of it. Strident and ringing, clear as a bell but not as deep or rich. But, it’s over now. And i don’t think it’s fixed yet, nor will it be when i have to leave for class in twenty minutes. Or, hmm… now they’re packing up. Sometimes i’m wrong…
