So, last night i went to a baseball game (yes, i know, it’s improbable). We didn’t quite have nosebleed seats, but we were high up enough that Veteran’s Stadium seemed more like an arena for the sky than a sports venu. When they announced a rain delay due to a thunderstorm watch people started streaming out of the open seats into the more protected areas but i stayed glued down as i contemplated the chance to watch the weather have its way with the world from the cheap seats.

Weather never really decided whether or not it was going to do a darn thing, as as a result we finally took cover just out of boredom and hunger. I’m not a big sports fan, so the wonder of walking around the circling circumference ramps of a major league stadium isn’t entirely lost on me although i have learned enough about market and captive economies to know better than to pay $2.50 for a bottle of water no matter how thirsty i am (and that they purposely buy spicy cheese for their nachos and sell only water and soda alongside them for outrageous prices). The big excitement came not from the weather or the overpriced concessions, but from some random South Philly girl who couldn’t have been older than 14 or 15 hitting on me while i was in line for the nachos.

If you’ve been reading for any length of time you’ll know that not too many young ladies seriously hit on me; to this day Selina denies flirting with me at any point up to and including when i first kissed her. And, i’ve especially never been hit on randomly at a sporting event by someone, and not just because i typically attend sporting events at the rate of one per two years. I’m thinking my lack of random events such as this one can be attributed either my going everywhere with my mother, my having too much hair, or my shopping in a totally flaming fashion. Last night i was with my friend Steve (who’s apparently equally eligible for random South Philly girls, since he was hit on after i didn’t give my number out), i’m sporting a sexy new haircut (well… the Sexy New Haircut), and i was all chill and guy-like with my beat up jeans (ask me if i let that happen intentionally) and my rapidly deteriorating mod-squad leather jacket. So, anyway, not that i’m especially keen on dating random jailbait from South Philly, but out of all the (equally Italian) guys she could have hit on she picked me. Or, maybe she hit on all of them. But, life has a way of inflating my ego whenever someone else lets the air out of it a little too much.

Proving that a general public of music fans don’t have to be tone-deaf idiots, Village Voice has released their top 40 albums and singles of the year as voted on by subscribers. Singles really aren’t too entertaining to me, but i was very entertained to see PJ Harvey edge out Radiohead by barely 30 votes for the #2 slot of the year. The PJ album beats Kid A hands down any day, but Radiohead seems to win on every list because of more promotion and a bigger American fan base. Isn’t it sad when the popular unpopular rock bands drown out all the good ones? Anyhow, my faith in music has been reaffirmed by the fact that enough people ignored the knee-jerk reaction of voting for Radiohead to nominate PJ Harvey for praise. Otherwise, i was happy to see Aimee Mann win over Madonna, but frowned when i saw U2’s massive failure All That You Can’t Leave Behind garner more votes than the two ladies got combined. Finally, hip-hop favourites Jurassic5 found a spot on the countdown only one vote higher than Philly’s own Marah, whose album might not be amazing – but it’s definitely Philly. Like i said … this just proved that there are some actual music fans out there. And, with this year booked with releases from Ani, Weezer, Garbage, and Tori Amos so far, it looks like us music lovers are in for quite a ride :p

We listened to Battle of the Bands entries on Saturday. 35 entries. I could hardly believe that 35 bands were floating around on our campus, and took the time to enter our little contest. After listening to the entries, my disbelief continues, for multiple reasons. Firstly, there are some truly amazing bands on our campus (among them Wellington , Petland, & The Unsinkable Mr. Marden), and i had no idea! The three bands i just linked are only a small selection of my favourites, which easily numbered around 10. Punk, acoustic rock, emo, … everything except for women on lead vocals! However, while i’m terribly impressed with many of our entries, a few of them left me totally underwhelmed. Not because of bad mixing, or playing, but because the songs had no forward motion to them … no momentum. Songwriting might not be the easiest thing in the world, but some of these bands had put enough time into it to get their own albums printed up professionally, from which i’d expect a certain amount of professional work. I’m pretty sure that i wouldn’t have stood a chance in the battle given my current acoustic state of affairs, but i still maintain that “Under My Skin” in its band arrangement would’ve won me a slot at the battle. And that’s that.

The snow today is like static. The view from here is all blurred and white, and walking around yields the snaps and cracks you would hear between teevee channels. I don’t remember having this much snow in recent years … it’s strange. It makes me feel as though i’m living in a wholly different city than the one i spent high school in. But, i’m still here, aren’t i?

Time – Evening of Valentine’s Day. Setting – South Street shopping district. Characters – Peter and his mother.

Mom – Oh! What’s this store? It looks cool!

Peter – That’s Condom Kingdom, Mom. [averts eyes, continues walking]

Mom – What?

Peter – Condom Kingdom. Don’t you see the little sperm painted on the sidewalk?

Mom – Oh! That’s what those are. Let’s go in!

Peter – I don’t want to, Mom; i go in there all of the time.

Mom – Oh, good, just what i wanted to hear.

Peter – No, i mean, … i meant… i mean… my friends are always dragging me in there. [averts eyes again, crosses the street] They have some interesting stuff; did you see the penis pasta in the window.

Mom – Well, we could stop in on our way back.

Peter – Oh, sure, just how i want to spend Valentine’s day: shopping for contraceptives with my mother.

Mom – Point taken.

[they continue walking away and incessantly chattering]

I’d like to add that while i am able to actively talk about condoms and penises with my mother in the middle of the street, i find myself physically unable to tell her about my girlfriend. The closest i came was mentioning her name and then replying to my mother’s query about her: “Oh, it’s a long story. She’s a very nice girl, though.”
