shopping

November 25, 2001 by krisis

AKA Music also has something blaring very loudly when i am shopping there. The first time i ever walked in they had Keep It Like a Secret playing much louder than i had ever heard it, and i took it as a good omen and proceeded to spend $100 dollars there. Subsequent trips have produced equally loud music and large expenditures.

The music is always especially loud in the back by the used section because one of the waist-high speakers is located right next to used soundtracks. That’s about where Rabi had gotten in her browsing, while i had drifted over to where ‘Y’ and ‘I’ face each other — alternately looking for Hum and Neil Young’s Decades. I was saying something, and then she was saying something, and then the music turned off and i found that we were standing in the middle of a record store screaming something at each other from across and aisle in a (suddenly not-so-) futile attempt to be heard over non-existent blaring music.

“Rabi, we’re shouting!”

It only felt a little like Clue, but everyone was watching us and we were yelling something stupid about records and it was hilarious. I left with an Ivy record, a Tori single that i quite enjoy, classic NIN from $4, and a Bright Eyes EP at a Rabi approved price. Rabi left with stuff i didn’t even vaguely recognize the name of. Otherwise, there was a lot of walking, kvetching about lemonade, talking about crushes and of ears, and giggling. Oh, and the couple on the bench next to ours at Rittenhouse did a lot of making out. All in all, it was a wonderful evening.

The trees were lit up with colored balls that we spotted from blocks away, and as we spoke my gaze kept wandering away from our wooden bench and out into the forest of glowing spheres. I can’t believe i’ve only met her four times. I can’t believe it’s been an entire year.

You have to love a family that takes both cooking and internet connections seriously. Meanwhile, sending Rabi and I cd shopping is such a bad idea. Of any cd that i was vaguely interested in but didn’t know anything about, she had pointers on +75% of them, and while this didn’t directly correlate to the amount of purchases i made in any way shape or form i maintain that i would have quit much earlier if i had just bought a few random things i knew nothing about to shut my wallet up. With her along i wound up making a huge list of everything i was looking for and buying roughly half of it.

The only worse idea i can possibly think of is sending Rabi, Amy and I all cd shopping. That would be… i don’t know… the Waterloo of one-day music purchases. Only with three extremely empty wallets instead of Napoleon losing. But, yeah, combined we bought just about 40 discs. Shopping list forthcoming…

Okay, so, that’s how my hair is supposed to look. What it actually looks like is… um… frosted cherry nail polish. However, my webcam doesn’t seem capable of picking up the subtle (highly metallic) nuances of frosted cherry, so instead it displays the color i meant to get my hair dyed to. Isn’t it ironic? Yeah, i really do think. Apparently i left the dye in about an hour too long after leaving the Chop Shop (i decided to walk home, it was pretty outside, i screamed along to Weezer on the way).

Nothing cures a bout of depression like a violent haircut and $40 worth of imported cd singles, that’s for sure.

Somewhere in my head i added up the price of my virtually shiny electronic airline ticket and the last month’s rent on my old apartment and the deposit on my new apartment and came up with an answer that equaled a whirlwind Labor Day shopping spree on South Street, and my wallet is still huddled down at the farthest corner of my pocket shivering and scared that i might try to pry yet another crisp $20 from it’s smooth leather grasp.

The entire list of purchases included (in meticulous receipt-confirmed order): Beth Orton’s Central Reservation, two hanging chandelier lamps from and one string of 15 chinese-latern style indoor lights, eight new lightbulbs, the new Ancient Melodies of the Future from Built to Spill, three pretty flowers for our living room, three heavy cardstock posters (Yellow Submarine, one for a Hair-style 60’s Be-In, and a funny spoof on drug culture), the sexiest pair of UnionBay cordouroy pants ever to touch my ass, poster-hanging gum, Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits, Alicia Key’s Songs in A Minor, & Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark. Yes, my characteristic $50+ on compact disc purchases is present in full force, but otherwise i actually managed to make some house-relevant purchases (a cam shot of me half-naked wearing the new pants sitting under my lantern lights will be forthcoming whenever i get my internet connection up)(and do situps for three months).

All i have left to buy is a dishrack, and then i think i’ll let my wallet go into hiding (oh, except for the umpteen new cds coming out this month and my impending trips out of the city. And, coincidence of all coincidences, my full-time job ends one day before my birthday. Damn me and my addictions to pop culture and sale-priced merchandise).

I am restless and twitching and doing tiny spurts of work as if it can release the pressure on my brain. Loosen the valves, let of some steam, be able to breathe again. It is not working. Laughing and chaos keeping bleeding in from every which direction and i have resorted to fantasy credit-card shopping for new cds and sheet music, though i might just click buy just for fun. There are some very specific emotions i attach to this restlessness… a sort of post-tired pre-miserable need for something to happen, and for it to happen loudly. And distraction… i practically have whiplash from all the distraction.
