The Illusion Of Aging

April 25, 2007 by krisis

I don’t think I actually age – I present an illusion of growing older and, eventually, my body mirrors my behavior with the simulacra of age.

I’m in decent shape, yet when I’m at work bend down to fetch a fallen paper clip below my desk I am in the habit of letting out a little groan. I never thought I needed the groan – it seemed like the thing to do when squatting half-sideways to reach under my desk.

Today as we walked in the door I reached down to pick up the mail and groaned, and I don’t even think I meant to. It just happened as I bent down.

Sometimes I feel like that’s the story of my life: acting old and then growing into it, blithely discarding youth without realizing its value.

When we traveled to Jamaica I refused to play with the other kids – I had packed a suitcase full of books, I informed the children’s director, and had no intent on nosing about, wasting my vacation meeting other children.

I was nine.

I feel the same way now, quick to invite myself into conversation with older co-workers, nodding along because I get all their jokes about old teevee shows, and going on about our Retro Party and all the Doo Wop music I grew up with.

In the eighties.

I’m worried that one night I will walk through the door and be fifty, suddenly wondering where all those lithe, childish years got off to.

In Which I Confess to Lazing

April 6, 2007 by krisis

If we define me by being musical and active and despising passive expenditures of time, then I think it’s safe to say that I went through a bit of an Anti-Me month in February.

Mostly due to video games.

Let me back up a step. In 2004 I gave up network television as a concept; it figuratively and literally doesn’t exist to me anymore, the latter because we haven’t had a vestige of television reception for going on three years.

Since 2004, 95% of the television I have watched (intentionally or not) has been Eagles games. And, because we don’t have reception of our own, most of my Eagles-watching is done with friends.

This season the group of friends happens to also be a group of depraved video-game maniacs, and when we decided to get together for one post-playoffs hurrah we did nothing but play video games.

I haven’t given up video games in the way that I gave up television, but they do make me wary … mostly because I spent a year and a half of my life doing nothing but playing City of Heroes. Sure, there are a handful of site updates and new songs to prove I was alive, and also I was apparently maintaining a relationship at the time, but I was also putting in 40+ hour weeks in at work and on the game.

Well, after our little party I decided that owning a video game system wouldn’t be the end of the world. It wouldn’t be connected to the internet, so it couldn’t suck me in the same degree as City of Heroes. And, much in the way we selectively view TVDs of good shows to replace our lack of television, I would only buy and play games that were compelling. It would be a social and intellectual pursuit.

Right. And then I bought We Love Katamari and a month of my life disappeared.

It’s not that I played video games for the entire month, so much as that video games were emblematic of my lack of energy for creative pursuits. Not lack of inspiration, mind you, but lack of energy.

Merrily, I was right – a non-networked PlayStation doesn’t have the kind of grip on my immortal soul as an internet world full of unique superheroes. This iteration of gaming in my life is merely a distraction, not an addiction.

But then I think – how much blogging could I have done while I was thumbing a joystick? How many songs could I have recorded? Et cetera, et cetera?

Who knows. Life doesn’t work like a metric conversion scale. Could I have recorded an awesome album, or did I simply not have anything to say creatively?

A retrospective answer is meaningless; it’s a question you and I need to ask ourselves each time we pick up a remote or a controller.

This week my answer is “you have plenty to say – start talking.”

Adult, Yes. Responsible? Eh…

March 18, 2007 by krisis

E is in a tizzy because the floor next to our bed is mysteriously wet, which is concerning not just from the wetness angle but because that bit of our bedroom is suspended in air over our backyard, and that’s not the kind of structural element you want to be soggy.

This state of affairs is solid proof that I am not even remotely prepared to be a homeowner, as my immediate reaction to her asking me to help move our bed to another room was, “Um, but then I’ll have to sleep on the bedroom floor.”

Despite my penchant for dozing off in brightly lit rooms with loud music playing, as a result of years of teenaged insomnia I have a sort of fetish for a bedroom that can be rendered pitch black and dead silent without a sleep mask and ear plugs, and our current bedroom is exactly that. Its position in the back of the house means no street-noise, and limited downstairs noise, and it barely shares any walls with neighbors. That means the only sound to be heard is the tweet tweet tweeting of birds in the morning, which I’d rather have in my bedroom than in my office/studio.

In any event, while I whined about all of that E phoned the landlord like a responsible renter, so hopefully a fix will be in place before the bedroom collapses into the backyard, as I would probably also wind up in the backyard, since the only other place I’d be willing to sleep is probably the basement.

Safe Mode

March 11, 2007 by krisis

February is historically a quiet month of Blogging, but it’s not usually quiet so quiet. So quiet that it lasted a third of the way into March.

Really quiet.

That isn’t to say that things have been happening, because they certainly have been, though maybe none of them have been as exciting as the disintegration of my favorite piece of outerwear. I just haven’t found a way to tell you about any of it.

Tonight I am reinstalling my entire operating system from scratch.

I’ve never done it before. Previously I just ran a computer into the ground – installing and uninstalling programs hoarding media files until I had run down to my last 5% of hard drive and then escaping to a newer machine, spending years delving into the last castaway to grab important files.

I’ve known since July 2004 that I wanted to reinstall my system. At the time I fought off a deadly Coolweb infestation, and ever since my computer hasn’t been the same – notably, I haven’t run any version of IE or NET Framework since then. Yet, every feint at reinstalling was quickly aborted – too many files to corral, too much mixing to fit onto any number of DVDs, too many programs and drivers to reacquire.

With each failed attempt at reinstalling my eDisorganization continued to swell. More files, more priceless audio, more programs, more peripherals with hard-to-find drivers. The accompanying implication was that if my computer actually succumbed to a virus or worm my life would be completely irrecoverable – a computer meltdown would surely be accompanied by some sort of real life Seppuku.

Six months ago I finally started digging out of the eDisorganization, eventually backing up all of my data to an external hard drive. Half a year after I began, I’m finally ready to take the plunge, which probably won’t be much of plunge at all, since I have everything I need redundantly backed up and ready to reinstall.

I’ve rendered the possibility of a meltdown completely obsolete. For the first time I don’t feel as if I am merrily running into the ground, blithely unconcerned at how I might survive.

I’m safe.

And, not just on my computer.

Small Details That Make Me Cry Every Time

February 10, 2007 by krisis

1. When Fleur tends to Bill at the end of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

2. Anya’s last scene in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

3. When Jessica Lange overturns the hospital cart near the end of Big Fish.

4. Madonna’s end-of-tour prayer in I’m Going to Tell You a Secret.

5. When Eowyn defeats the Witch King in Return of the King.

Surely you have noticed that all five moments involve strong or outspoken female characters. The interesting question is, how many of those moment make me cry because they are sad/touching, as opposed to the ones that make me cry because I am a feminist?

At first blush it would seem to be 4 to 1, but not all is what meets the eye.
