Once, in 1st grade, we were assigned to do our writing homework on that wide-lined loose-leaf paper that children use. In my class there was a quiet and studious girl who may have been named Clarissa. She had the straightest brown hair i’ve ever seen. On that day she turned in her writing assignment and the teacher smiled. Clarissa had unexpectedly run out of loose-leaf the night before and so she erased her entire last assignment and used the paper over again for her homework. She always wrote lightly, so erasing a wasn’t a hard thing to do.

There’s a lesson in there somewhere.

Ah, but that little blog invites the tale of how i wound up living with Matt. “Wound up” is the perfect phrase, since there was no intention involved. As early as March i was asking my friends from the Drexel Players where they were going to live. I pointedly neglected to turn in a housing deposit so i would be forced to get an apartment and as of right now i can asure you that was the best idea i ever had.

I had plenty of housing prospects, struck up at parties and while manning the box office. In fact, at a point we had a house full of people confirmed. Being the lowly and uninformed Freshman, i told potential roommates, all of them upperclassmen, that i had no idea where to begin but would look for places if they could give me a little direction. They all already lived off-campus so knew how to go about looking for a place, and i simply didn’t realize how easy it was.

Owing to both of those factors, really, i found myself potentially homeless in June, and headed into a grueling schedule of leading Orientations for new Freshmen. With only one day a week off (this was before the collarbone injury, which is another story entirely) i was afraid i’d never get to look for a place. I found someone in a similar situation and made the same plea to them: point me in a direction and i’ll do the work for us. I wasn’t really taken up on the offer, but to be fair i know that he was busy too. Despairing that i was doomed to live at home for the year, one day i was idly reading shafted and saw this (beware, huge load time, most of it is non-essential pictures tho). The rest, as they say, is history. I replied, Matt and i chatted, and once we saw a place or two together we grabbed a local paper and went hardcore searching. Once i realized how simple it was, i simply made sure our schedules were coordinated and booked appointments. And here we are now.

I suppose all of those other folks should have believed me when i said i would do the legwork for them. Oh well… there’s always next year.

Moving in with Matt will be pretty interesting. Being an only child i’ve only ever had two roommates, and they’ve both been during college. One was the dreaded Viktor, who i spoke about at length last week (trust me, you don’t need a link to find it). The other one was Kenny. Kenny and i were randomly paired to be freshman year roommates based on the fact that neither of us smoked. I wasn’t especially comforted by the lack of further questions, such as “Are you a misogynist?” and “Do you have especially poor taste in music?” Left without a decent screening process, i waited in terror.

In perhaps the happiest turn of events in my entire life, the terror was for naught. Kenny wound up being enough like me that we got along, and different enough to spark many a discussion starting at 1am. His copy of NFK2k only sweetened the deal. And, while he brought his fair share of drama and procrastination into the mix, Kenny and i worked perfectly. We were both a little disorganized. He went home on weekends while i liked to lounge. I did theatre at night while he did work and took naps. I loved female singer songwriters and he liked hip hop … the list continues forever. What i will always appreciate about him is that every conflicting impulse (our taste in music, for example) wasn’t so much solved as it was resolved. There were nights that we took turns listening to Dr. Dre and Tori, and there were night when he blasted Busta while i strummed my guitar. Once i even played along to Busta, but he wasn’t there. Kenny even dug my songwriting, and we listened to my whole demo on his stereo when i first burned it.

Freshman year was totally made by the fact that i did not have roommate troubles, just as this summer was broken by them. Here comes Sophomore year. And the fun begins on Wednesday.

Ok, so, we’ve established two obsessions on my part. One is my obsession with being #1 at things that aren’t hard to win. The other is my deepfelt hatred of survivor. Actually, as a webpage i find it quite interesting, but as a teevee show its ratings were a testament to how low we have sunk as a society. Combine these two impulses together, and you have my intense desire to blog more often than the 9 remaining survivors do every day. Of course, they currently lead me on links from the power blogger page by 90, but that’s just a small detail

The crux of the matter is that there are quite a number of blogs on the internet, a significant percentage of which are updated regularly. Of those updated daily, there are then some that are updated frequently. And then there are the 50 people active enough to update all day. And i am, for now, one of those people. What bothers me, is that when i randomly click through some of the top10, i don’t find a whole lot that grabs a hold of me.

Of course, i have a history with joining a new genre of page and then trying to dictate what it should be based on my expectations of it. However, weblogs are more familiar ground, and i know the difference between an excuse for portals with fancy layout and someone who is actually writing something. Which is not to say that i’m writing anything. I don’t really have anything to write yet, but i suppose i’m trying to draw an audience in with the promise that i will have something to write about in the fall, which is really only a week and a half away for me.

You might be reading this right now and thinking that it is just a bunch of self assured tripe, and that you could do better. I honestly believe you can. It takes about five days to get listed in the directory at blogger.com. It takes less than an hour to get set up on GeoCities. Start a blog page today. Think about what to do with it for the next four days. On day five, post your intelligent thoughts like a madman. I promise to be there watching.
