run ragged and happy

June 21, 2009 by krisis

This is a meandering post about life and stuff. Content that’s all focused like a laser mounted on a deadly shark may or may not resume tomorrow.

This weekend E headed up the NNJ/NYC to play a show and help with some solstice cleaning along with the sibs at her mother’s house. I wanted to tag along to see her concert and reap the sib-time, but my life was in need of some cleaning up as well.

When I woke up on Saturday I felt like my to-do list was a litany of random drudgery. Organize this, scrub that, upload stuff to here. Even as I was crossing things off it didn’t feel very big picture. Typical: artist-, writer-, marketer-me trapped under a Sisyphisian list of uncreative to-dos. The only thing keeping me sane was my Twitter pipeline to the outside world.

As the day wore on I kept feeling like I was behind the boulder until I caught a social network update from my dear musical friend Vicky Spaeth, which read:

Simplify, simplify, simplify! I think we over-complicate our lives way too much.

I read that, then took another look at my list, and realized there was a big picture. It was all “simplify.” Organizing shelves and wires so my creative space is less cluttered, so I can create. Clean out the house so I don’t have a worry of other things to do nagging me when I want to create. Upload what I’ve created to as many places as will have it, so people can actually hear it.

I finally have the simplicity that provides one big picture. I have focus. Finally everything I’m doing points in the same direction.

I look back at the 2000 me. Within a two month span I started a blog, shot digital video of myself, and was the only songwriter on the whole internet uploading a concert every week. And it all came easy. But it was over-complicated. The technology was a tangle. The life was a tangle – pulling As and paying for my first apartment and squeezing in music beside theatre.

Maybe I was on the verge of conquering the world, but it wasn’t simple. There was no picture to focus on. Which was fine – I was in college! But that’s why we grow up. And hopefully get less complicated, instead of more.

It took the weekend and the twenty-seven years before it, but I am really almost there. Almost to the point that I can just flip a switch and empty my thoughts and songs directly onto the internet without a fussy mess of wires and files and wasted time.

And be worth watching.

It feels cool and satisfying, and I’m happy – happy sweating my ass off and mopping the floor, or putting away the umpteenth load of laundry, passing out on the couch while I wait for my wife to get home. Happy without any descriptors or mitigators, because there’s a point to it.

Just happy.

With exactly one week until i move into my apartment, i would like to re-emphasize that i HATE my current roommate Viktor. At first i just thought i was having some culture-clash issues with him, but after an entire season of togetherness i now know that he is an inconsiderate, smelly fuck (while i am only an unmotivated, sedentary, territorial bitch). Two particular items bothered me today, both in the “i do them too, but you do them worse” category. 1 – My dear roommate left his socks on the floor. Now, i leave my socks everywhere, but not only were they on the floor, but they were sitting right under our HVAC unit. Futhermore, these socks were the nastiest socks i have ever witnessed, and i didn’t even want to nudge them with my foot. So, while Viktor was out and about for the day, i had the smell of his feet to comfort me. 2 – I listen to music. Viktor listens to the radio. Big difference. Another big difference would be that Viktor turns on the radio whenever he walks into the room and leaves it on until i get up and turn it off, whereas i turn down my music to a whisper when he first walks in. The kicker is that Viktor turns the radio on when he gets up around 8am, which happens to be two hours before i get up on days i don’t have work. In comparison, he just asked me to turn down my already lowered Ani DiFranco cd because he is “sleeping now.” Happily, this form of psychological torture for the fair and rational will only continue for one more week. And believe me, i am overjoyed.

So you want short posts, eh? eh? Well, here you go. This has been the most boring week, like, ever. This morning i was supposed to wake up early and wash cars with my fraternity, and when i found out that the event was cancelled i was actually upset. I intensely looked forward to each day of work, and when i got home (reeking of coffee) the whole world sorta dissolved away to leave me bOred. I usually turn to Shafted in such times of despair, but the scariest ass of all seems to have killed nearly everyone other than MikeCy and JCO (which doesn’t make a big difference). So, in my intense boredom, this morning i created a blogger Powered by Blogger on my website. For those not in the know, a blogger can turn any two-bit idiot into the owner of the next great e/n site (paradox, anyone?). Blogging allows you to automatically post to any page that you have ftp access to, and it automatically arranges and archives for you. My blogger will be a venu for me to post short musings with no editting or linebreaks allowed at all. Isn’t it hard to picture? So, this short post is being simul-cast to Shafted and my blogger. I’m very excited. Yes, my life is that explicitly boring.

amesdevil: hello peter darling. hows life?

krisisPM: Life is fair, at best. And not in the sense that it is Fair, but in the sense that it is like a schoolbook’s condition when it is neither Excellent or Good

amesdevil: so, decent.

krisisPM: yes, that word may also apply
