There Once Was A Boy Named Pierre

June 7, 2005 by krisis

Last night I had a read through for a play where I am 12 years old (and Gina’s son. Ha!). All weekend I thought about what it would be like to be twelve again, but with all the hindsight I have now because that is what I’ll have to be on stage.

It’s hard. I can’t remember that pre-adolescent moving without self-consciousness, and saying what came to mind with no thoughts as to what people would think, and being convinced that everything was logical and true and black and white.

In the thinking about that I’ve been thinking a lot about who I was at twelve, and leading up to twelve, and how I was both very like and completely unlike my character, Paul.

As such, the next few posts will be peppered with a sort of autobiographical reflection that I’m not really known for on here. Please just bare with me, and try to imagine me but more rational and tinier (but with just as big of a head).

I suspect I’ll do a fare share of creative re-imagining of my past not as deceit but just because this stuff has been bouncing around in my head for so many years that I only know how to tell it this way, which is maybe not quite the way it originally happened.

Jennifuh! (and other pre-dinner fun)

April 24, 2004 by krisis

No time to unload the lengthy post i’ve been jotting down between hours of research — i’m heading to dinner at my favorite restaurant with Elise, who got us onto the guest-list for a show tonight. While you await my return, here’s some quick hits that i might develop further when i return.

This week’s American Idol bootee Jennifer Hudson has a new fan site. It’s quite frightening. I was always on the fence about Jennifer, but after watching her duet with Barry Manilow currently linked from the main page i have changed my mind. That performance easily trumps anything i’ve seen on idol so far this year.

Is Google the beginning of Skynet? Excellent daily read TDavid urges Terminator fans everywhere to imagine the possibility.

I make it a point not to follow celebrity court cases, but VH1 (of all place) offers a very human peek at how Michael Jackson’s current controversy got started. The facts seem to check out, which only makes this latest saga even sadder.

Denmark vs Canada: A Bitter Cold Grudge Match! In a peek at the intellectual humor that marks his concerts, my folk hero weighs in on this conflict over a “small, frozen rock.”

I love reading SugarMama. Apparently, so does Jett. I love how Jett continues to make appearances in comments all over the web while she procrastinates in getting her kick ass blog back on schedule. Meanwhile, Look for sugarmama to appear on the sidebar any minute now.

I’ve stopped being able to tell the fact from the fiction over at Acerbia, but i’m hoping this recent post is the latter. A great example of how you can use blogs for nefarious unbloglike purposes.

Will i shave? I don’t want to meet the band looking all scruffy, but this is my last chance to endure the scraggly stages of my virtually non-existant facial hair to see if it can turn into something more dignified before i head out into the work world. Can you imagine me with a moustache? Would i just look like a bad porn star? What about a goatee? Discuss.

No, no, i haven’t totally quit the internet. Quite the opposite actually. After much hemming and hawing, i finally found the right combination of time, nerve, and Gina to enter into combat over at SongFight, where internet musicians engage in a gory battle to write the best song for a given title in a single week. Our entry last week was a bit of a meh songwriting effort on my part that i won’t inflict on you, but this week Gina turned in a lovely folk song that i managed to only partially screw up in my all-night attempt to mix it.

So, okay, here’s the thing. I want you to vote for us in the “Moscow, Idaho” fight. so we can be all successful and validated and respected and stuff. However, sending you over there just to vote for me isn’t fair to the other combatants — you wouldn’t listen to any of the other excellent entries! My solution is that i will not reveal our band name; if you know anything about Gina you can easily pick us out, but otherwise you’ll be forced to listen to other entries until you recognize us!

Well, okay, maybe that’s a shitty idea. I’ll give you a hint: our “band” name consists of both of our screen names, sortof. Okay? There you go. Meanwhile, make sure you at least listen to Jim Tyrrell, Son of Supercar, RedCar, and Forty Second Songs, as they have all received glowing endorsements on The Discussion Board. And, if you really want to hear some good tunes, check out the stream of this week’s other fight, Romantic Cheapskate, which is more of a heavyweight battle (you’ll see what i mean).

More (actual) blogging soon (maybe).
