Haul Around The World: Why no EPICs for New Warriors? Plus: Daredevil, Gambit, & more!

October 28, 2019 by krisis

Your eyes do not deceive you – this video is a Classic Collection, since it was shot before my big move!

That’s because I’ve got a whole year of haul videos to catch up on, because this was my order from January 1, 2019. In this order I go deep on Marvel’s peculiar new strategy of following up ancient classic collections with new trades, plus talk up my Gambit binding projects, love of Moon Knights and Lumberjanes, and more!

In this haul:

  • from Marvel Comics
    • Marvel Knights Daredevil: Unusual Suspects – Visit the Daredevil Guide
    • Moon Knight Epic Collection: Final Rest (Epic Vol. 3) – Visit the Moon Knight Guide
    • New Warriors: Darkness & Light – Visit the New Warriors Guide
    • Punisher Epic Collection: Circle of Blood (Epic Vol. 2) – Visit the Punisher Guide
    • Quasar: Cosmos In Collision (AKA Classic Vol. 2)
    • X-Men – Gambit Complete Collection, Vol 2 – Visit the X-Men Ongoings Guide
  • from Image and indie publishers:
    • Image / Top Cow: Aphrodite V, Vol 01
    • Dark Horse: BPRD: Hell On Earth, Vol 04
    • Boom: Lumberjanes, Vol 10

Indie Series Spotlight: Lumberjanes (Ep02)

March 8, 2018 by krisis

This is the second episode of my new YouTube show, Indie Series Spotlight!

Any conversation about my favorite recent independent and creator-owned series would be incomplete without a mention of Lumberjanes – a consistent favorite of all three members of our household.

When I first picked up the first volume of Lumberjanes I was seriously unimpressed. It seemed like short-attention-span theatre. Every character seemed to spend their entire time yelling, or occasionally punching monsters on the head.

It wasn’t until I started reading the series out loud to EV6 that the charm of the series and its characters became more apparent to me, and I quickly discovered that Volume 2 recast the series as a mythologically-rooted mystery with some seriously deep continuity. From that point forward, we’ve all been hooked!

The first half of this video is a general discussion of Lumberjanes and the second half is a story-specific portion full of spoilers!

Indie Comics Spotlight Episode #2 features Lumberjanes, the first five volumes of which are currently available to read for free as part of the Comixology Unlimited library!

Back Issue Review: Lumberjanes, DC Comics Titans, & Unstoppable Wasp

February 18, 2018 by krisis

I haven’t been doing much back-issue reading this week, which means this Back Issue Review isn’t as sprawling as its been in past weeks.

I did manage to knock out four volumes worth of youthful titles. None of the were major standouts, but they all presented nuanced looks at the meaning of friendship and identity.

  • Lumberjanes (2014) #25-28(AKA Vol. 7 – A Bird’s-Eye View), Boom! Entertainment, Inc
  • Titans (2016) Rebirth & #1-6 (AKA Vol. 1 – The Return of Wally West), DC Comics
  • Titans (2016) #7-10 & Annual 1 (AKA Vol. 2 – Made In Manhattan), DC Comics
  • Titans (2016) #12-18 (AKA Vol. 3 – A Judas Among Us), DC Comics
  • The Unstoppable Wasp #1-4 (AKA Vol. 1 – Unstoppable), Marvel Comics

This week in comic book collected editions – March 1, 2017

February 26, 2017 by krisis

Whether you’re a comics obsessee or a floppy books neophyte, parsing the new collected editions out each week is a chore.

Sure, a faithful fan can visit the Previews catalog to see what’s out, but it doesn’t always explain what each series should collect and why you ought to care.

And, why would (or: should) a new or dabbling fan have to know what a Previews catalog even is!

I want to help both the masters and the newbies find the books that interest them the most. Thus, this post.

Publishers:

  • DC
  • Dark Horse – No books this week!
  • IDW
  • Image Comics
  • Marvel Comics
  • Valiant Entertainment – No books this week!
  • Other Publishers

What are the must-read books this week?

I think DC has the market cornered this week with two of their three scant releases – Lumberjanes/Gotham Academy and Zatanna by Paul Dini.

More on the Zatanna below. As for Lumberjanes: EV has been addicted to Lumberjanes ever since she turned three, to the point that she always has an invisible camper holding her hand when we cross a street. I’m not sure if Gotham Academy is similarly addictive, but this is probably a good buy for your early-grades comic fan – the most objectionable thing about Lumberjanes is generally how much time they spend hollering.

If you want to get started with Lumberjanes, Volume 1 is just okay, but the story begins to get interesting in Volume 2. For more on Gotham Academy collections, see Guide to Gotham or DC New 52.

And now, on to the books!
