Keep your calendars clear, my friends, because @5pm on Thursday May 3rd Gina and I will be playing our first “concert” as a part of the Spring Jam block party. While i’d been pestering the Campus Activities Board to book us for the event for well over a month, it was cemented last night when Gina and I were the only two performers to show up at an open mic event, which was quickly turned into “Live with Gina & Peter.” We traded a few individual performances (a new one of hers, and “Landslide.” “No Second Chance,” “Relief,” “Hold on Me,” “Splinter,” and a combo “Lucky Star” + “Lost Out” for me), but then joined forces for our standards: “Under My Skin,” “With or Without You,” “Sharks Can’t Sleep” (fun!), “Never Say Goodbye,” “Can’t Do Without You,” a new song, and “Deadweight.” It remains to be seen what songs we’ll be adding for our joint set at the block party, but last night was definitely fun and some of the better performing we’ve managed to put together in our several years of intermittent collaboration. So, keep May 3rd free, and show up not only for the music but also for the block party extravaganza!

While hanging out (again) with Kathe today she was working on a website for our Campus Activities Board and had forgotten to bring cds to the office with her. Of course, I came to the rescue fresh out of an incredibly dull mixing session in the recording studio, and proceeded to play the following for well over two hours: Lost Out, Punk, Deadweight, Inadequacy Song, Five Minutes, Touch, Afterglow, Falling Down, Hold On Me, Will It Ever Come?, All That’s True, A Long Time Since, Splinter, Under My Skin, Other Plans, Gravel, Both Hands, Tear In Your Hand, Never Say Goodbye, No Second Chance, World In My Hand, Typical, More Than That, Resolve, Relief, Revirginized Honey, Nothing To Say, Hide Your Eyes, Give, Burn, Make Sense, & Bridge. Yeah, that’s a lot of songs, and one or two were even omitted for time’s sake, if you could imagine. If it had been a real concert, intermission would have started after “Never Say Goodbye,” and the encore began the very rare (not played once in all of 2000) “Hide Your Eyes.” Lyrics to everything except the three covers can be grabbed from AMkitchen‘s lyric page. So… i’m all guitar-ed out for the day; my fingers are all frayed and dented and my voice is in nearly the same condition, although that tends to yield more fun results than numbed-out fingertips. Bed-time quickly approached.

“music and performance, as much as i feel i’ve lost it over the last year and a half, is the one thing that i feel can elevate me to a level where i can pass over my awkwardness. for thirty minutes or so, i gain everyone’s undivided attention. i can introduce myself without even saying my name, but just by giving of myself. when i’m leaned up against a counter with a bunch of indie kids like i was last night, it just felt like an elongated version of the awkward minutes in between bands at a show, only the bands would never come on.“

blargh. life crept up and smacked me today, since we’re headed into midterm week. in slightly better news, i had my massive madonna review published in the triangle this week. in slightly worse news, last night i played an open mic where i thoroughly slaughtered the main staples of my cache of favourite songs. in order: “inadequacy song” (aborted), “under my skin,” “deadweight,” lucky star,” “never say goodbye,” a short break, “gravel,” “punk,” & “a long time since.” all can be found in the trio archive. “never say goodbye” and “punk” went over especially well.
