I was just little mister urbanite on our little shopping trip, whipping out credit cards and twenties and intense street navigation knowledge and all that. And i jaywalked like a whore. Philly is just a jaywalking city … there’s no reason to cross politely. None of my friends really grasped that, so it was left to me to lead them across lots of middle-of-the-block crossings with lots of rainy cars bearing down on us like stampeding cattle. Plus i had my scarf all wrapped around my neck and was wearing dark jeans and my faded maroon leather jacket. i’m a city-boy thru and thru.

Is there a good reason that my belly button smells of coffee? It’s not as though i was serving it shirtless today. Ack… the smell of that place makes me so queazy … all of the coffee and sweet and bleach seeps into my fingertips as i clean at the end of the day and when i get home i can still smell it even after scrubbing my hands for minutes at a time. Uck. When i used to work in a footwear store the scent of rubber made me nauseous as well. I never got sick from the scents of being a camp counselor though; even the goose poop gets charming after a while when the sun is shining.

I miss hair. I didn’t make it into the cast of our production, but i wound up running props for all of the performances. After getting used to the format of the show i came to have my favourite moments and songs, where i’d peek out of the curtain to watch the action; and then there were the points where i knew to get onto the headset because our stage manager was likely to be dishing in between lighting cues.

“Hair” got progressively more and more sizzling night after night until finally for the penultimate performance it just exploded from the mouths of the cast like some sort of audio dynamite. After the last chorus there had to have been a second of awed silence before the audience began their applause. I grabbed for the headset and switched it on to hear Kate say “Oh my god, that was amazing.” All of us just *knew* we’d seen the cast fall into a totally synergetic state to produce an amazing work of art.

By the end of the second act all the props were gone and i’d just get to stand in the wings and listen to the last few songs. I don’t think anything i’ll ever do in my life will compare the awe of watching my darling cast sing the refrain of “Let the Sunshine In” with my friend Tom lying dead in the middle of the stage as Claude Bukowski. “Let the Sunshine In” is at once the most depressing and uplifting song you’ll ever hear in theatre next to Annie‘s “Tomorrow,” if you have the right kind of cast at the end it turns into some sort of magical rock opera gospel choir with all of the members swaying and clapping and crying and… God, what a great musical… if you like Rent at all you need to find a production of Hair to go see. Or, at least buy the soundtrack.

I just ate a ton of red meat (still feels dirty), posed for a lot of pictures (none suitable for posting, though my hair is sexy), and wrestled (i won best 2 out of 3) for the past five hours. And at some point in there we inducted new members into our Fraternity. Our new tradition? The lightest member of the previous pledge class wrestles the lightest member of the executive board! I was pitted against our chapter president Lisa. My side piledriver definitely was the highlite!

In an effort to aid you in understanding the twisted depths of my psyche, lemme reveal two things about myself and then give you two pieces of advice:

  • I might bitch about theatre for hours at a time, but you had better believe i do a frantic happy dance when i get cast. The dance also involves screaming. And jumping up and down like some sort of idiot. The dance is exponentially longer when i get a part that i actually want, and is usually preceded by my screaming “No Fucking Way!” at my stage manager for about a whole minute.
  • I am so dumb that i invite real people to the site before thinking about whether or not i said anything about them recently that could get me into trouble.
  • When in doubt, do audition for plays with Madonna songs played on guitar, but only if you have another song in your repertoire as a backup.
  • Decide if you’re more embarrassed using a pick-up line in person or via the internet before you post the line to your website, which renders the whole debate rather moot..

That’s a pretty good capsule summary of the last three hours of my life. I so intended to be asleep by now, but the butterflies in my stomach are holding the sleepy part of my brain hostage under threat of vicious tickle wars.

Life is nice to me sometimes, especially when i least expect it to be. Goodnight.
