Crushing Comics S01E051 – X-Men Fatal Attractions & Phalanx Covenant (+ the challenges of reprinting 90s comics)

January 1, 2018 by krisis

Do you remember what it was like to celebrate the new year as a young child? For me, it’s memories of banging pots and pans at midnight, but also of months trying to remember to get the date right when writing the headers of my school assignments. After all, when you’re seven years old, you’ve spent 100% of you school life so far writing the prior year down on assignments!

In this episode open up two big books of comics from my original collecting days of the 90s: X-Men: Fatal Attractions and X-Men: Phalanx Covenant. As I page through them, I discuss Marvel’s process for restoring the art from these comics, and how it presents different challenges than reprinting books from the Silver Age – including dealing with holographs.

Want to start from the beginning of this season of videos? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 51 features the X-Men: Fatal Attractions and X-Men: Phalanx Covenant oversized hardcovers. To understand where they fit into X-Men continuity, see Uncanny X-Men #281-350.

Crushing Comics S01E28 – “Why I love X-Men,” X-Men Origins, Asgardian Wars, & Mutant Massacre

November 28, 2017 by krisis

It’s no secret that that my comic book collection is overwhelmingly filled with X-Men comics, but I feel like there are so many more X-Men comic bundles to unwrap as I work my way through my oversize shelf.

In this episode I work my X-Men t-shirt on for good luck in plucking some X-books from the wall, and it worked! While I’m unpacking, I share a little insight on why I love the X-Men. Then, I dig into their origins and two of their earliest classic oversize hardcovers – Mutant Massacre and Asgardian Wars.

Episode 28 features X-Men Origins (Amazon) & Origins II (Amazon), X-Men: Asgardian Wars (Amazon), and X-Men: Mutant Massacre (Amazon). Find out where the latter two collections fit in with my Guide to Claremont-era X-Men.

Crushing Comics S01E21 – X-Men: Manifest Destiny and Dark Avengers / X-Men: Utopia

November 21, 2017 by krisis

After a brief digression about how weight training helps with comic collecting, I unwrap a hefty brick of six books, including a pair of X-Men “Manifest Destiny” volumes and the X-Men’s throwdown with Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers. The episode ends in a cliffhanger, as I tease what the other half of the brick holds in store.

Episode 21 features X-Men: Manifest Destiny (Amazon), Uncanny X-Men: Manifest Destiny (Amazon), and Avengers/X-Men: Utopia (Amazon / eBay). This material is covered in the guide to Uncanny X-Men’s Matt Fraction era as well as in the guide to Bendis’s Dark Avengers.

Crushing Comics S01E16 – Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 1 (plus, Marvel Omnibus history & the “Glued vs. Sewn” debate)

November 16, 2017 by krisis

I begin this episode reminiscing about the history of the Marvel Omnibus program, not realizing I would be pulling out one their earliest and most often-reprinted omnibuses – and one of my all-time favorites – Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 1. I get so distracted talking about it’s place in Marvel’s history (both of comics and omnibuses) that I almost forget to talk about its contents!

Want to start from the beginning of this series of episodes? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 16 features Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 1 (Amazon / eBay) as covered by my Guide to Claremont-era X-Men.

Crushing Comics, S01E08 – Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 2

November 8, 2017 by krisis

On this episode I unwrap what may be my favorite classic of all time in Uncanny X-Men, Vol. 2, leading me to reminisce about buying my first (of several) copies of the Dark Phoenix Saga when I was 11.

Want to start from the beginning? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 8 features Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 2 (Amazon / eBay) as covered by my Guide to Claremont-era X-Men.
