blogathon

July 17, 2002 by krisis

Yes, i am doing Blogathon this year … if three people pledge a donation to my charity by Sunday.

For those of you not in the know, Blogathon is a yearly event that involves blogging through an entire twenty-four hours while your friends and readers sponsor a charity on your behalf. The longer you stay awake and keep posting, the more the donation will theoretically be – though you can pledge a flat amount: you could donate $6 for a whole 24hrs of blogging or $.25 an hour for the same result. This year during the ‘thon I’ll be posting a newly recorded song every hour on the hour in addition to blogging nearly every half hour. Take a look at the archive of my efforts from last year to get an idea of what to expect.

While Blogathon is excellent publicity for both blogs and their authors, its most important aspect is that it gets the extended blogging community aware and active in supporting hundreds of worthy charities around the country… and the world. Last year my charity was Manna, a local organization that brings meals to housebound AIDS and HIV patients. This year i wanted to choose a national charity who made donation possible through their own website; i chose Planned Parenthood.

For those of you who are under the assumption that Planned Parenthood directly conflicts with some of your political beliefs i would like to point out that, among other things, Planned Parenthood certifies and subsidizes Peer Counseling programs in high schools across America. The goals of these programs (which i was a part of) are to prevent unwanted pregnancy and the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections through frank peer to peer education. Though i cannot promise that pledge money will go directly to that purpose, i think it’s important to keep in mind that Planned Parenthood represents a lot more than the highly polarized issue of abortion. So, if your political stance includes keeping the nation’s youth in the dark about important facts that they could be learning from peers who they trust and relate to, then please refrain from pledging your support. However, if you have an open mind and think education and support are the keys to America’s youth making informed decisions about sex and sexuality, then please consider sponsoring my squawking and strumming.

Okay, enough of that, back to work i go. Oh – one last thing – i haven’t even started recording, so you still have plenty of time to request a song. No promises, though.

In other news: Alison compares bug spray to whiskey, as she discovers that one of her resident kitchen vermin has a higher tolerance than she does. I am mulling over which charity i’ll be singing for. Rabi saves a life and lives in a cave, but she seems to have forsaken permalinks (or not). We’re one step closer to living in an episode of X-Files. Just when i thought she was about to slip, she reaffirms my faith. I talked to another Philly blogger. Meg is either a Virgo or operates on the same set of brain waves as i do. Brendan won’t be back for over a year. And, um, i started writing a new song for the first time in a while.

With me there are intake phases, and output phases. They connect to everything. With writing music i will have a strong output stage where i’m not listening or learning anything unless i’m using it to directly focus back into my output of new songs and covers and things. The same goes for writing on the internet, or working on my webpage, or anything that could be construed as creative work. However, usually they don’t all line up. When i was busy writing new songs i wasn’t really in webdesign output-mode because i wouldn’t have the time to do both. But, somehow last month it all lined up over the course of the two or three days around the BlogAThon, which means now i’m all switched over to input and can hardly create anything. No designs, no new music, and it’s like pulling teeth to get me to blog something.

The more interesting switch that had been flicked somewhere along the way is the one where i used to be able to blog about anything, or nothing… especially nothing, but now i need some sort of inspiration or subject or hard kick in the pants to get me into this tiny white box. That switch was a gradual thing, and you can watch it happen if you read any length of the archives. The only thing is… it wasn’t really intentional, and i don’t think this spareness really represents what i meant to be doing, but neither did the constant rush of new post after new post with no respect for the ones that were scrolling off of the bottom of the page. Of course, my spareness obviously connects a little bit to my lack of output, but it makes me wonder where in the middle of my fifty three archived weeks i reached equilibrium, and how far back i have to track to get back to it.

Yeah, fifty three, i just counted. Because of weird archive-week math that doesn’t mean that i’ve really been here for an entire year, but we are six days away. Wow.

For the record: 52 songs, 10,000+ words, 43 mentions of Gina. 12 links to Rabi. 1 entire demo cd sans covers. 4 acoustic Madonna songs. 11 songs recorded during blogathon. hundreds of people fed through donations to manna. 39 songs recorded in under a week. 2 washburn acoustic guitars. one cold shower and a corresponding gratuitous ass shot. 4 songs about people who were listening to the ‘thon. 2hours 57minutes & 48seconds of music. And, i only said “tired” once (and it was in lyrics!).

i… i will wait past the fuss and the hustle that keeps me awake but it comes right down to faith you’ve got it in your eyes there are no surprises in store for you – until you awake

and i can see the good in all people except for in me but i never could be satisfied without someone like you to point these things out to me – until you awake

just another simple melody my hands wrung out of me but if it’s just the same i’d like to give it your name that is – until you awake

so you’ve got this guy who’d spend eternity with you right by your side but you’ve got to put up a fight to hold on night to night he will be waiting – until you awake

this is just another simple melody my hands wrung out of me but if it’s just the same to him i’d like to give it your name that is – until you awake

i had this bright idea to sit here and play until my voice wore thin but i don’t say the words that i really meant and it take you to get the page and the pen all syunced up again and i promise to stop thinking of you – when you awake

but i’ll keep playing this tune – until you awake

and i’d to finish soon – so please won’t you wake.
