There is a mutiny building in my fingers; a resistance is gathering between my knuckles and around my wrists. They are not used to this sort of treatment… five hours of playing songs that i don’t have the option to fudge … songs that sound only how they sound. Towards the end my fingers were on automatic, picking out strings without my even having to think of it, but in the middle they were clumsy and tired as the muscles in my arms sighed with exertion.

There was a power to it — to making other people’s songs sound how they were meant, and to making my own songs sound out like i hear them in my own head. Kat sat on the bed mostly non-plussed, pecking away at her laptop, but Laurel seemed to be in a mild form of shock. And i… i wasn’t even in the room. The songs had filled it beyond its capacity to hold me.

Fingers aside, my voice amazed me. After having barely mustered up enough of it to power through my jury last week, imagine my surprise as it rose to the top of the staff and i was still hitting clean notes, open throated and howling. Sometimes a song finds one spectacular note inside of itself that my voice is attracted to like a moth to flame, willing to burn itself around the edges just to hit that one note and hold hold hold hold it over the four chords in the progression.

There is definitely a Trio brewing around here, somewhere.

Actually, i wholly forgot to mention this when i was talking about my occasional ability to play competent solos earlier this hour, but i take a wonderful little solo in the next A-side, and it actually resolves to the right note. Plus, we do great inuitive ad-lib harmony. Plus, it’s Madonna. To make up for all that success all in one hastily recorded song, the B-side is horrendous. Truly awful. You’ll see what i mean in a few minutes…

i am out of g-strings. out. i have 10 of every other string except for g. this makes sense, since i buy b and e in bulk and hardly ever break d and a enough to buy multiple packs of strings at once. this is bad because i don’t know when i can get to a music store and i really really need a string to be able to play my guitar, ya know? damnit… add one more thing to tomorrow’s to-do list. fuck.

Some days i just feel as though i am slowly suffocating… tangled up in life and with each tiny attempt to get free i’m just getting more and more wrapped up. Tonight doing anything makes me vaguely sick with a kernel of potential violence … my broken guitar string urges me to thrash at the other five with my pick until they all relinquish their hold on the bridge. That was the start. Next came the absolutely desolation of my apartment… no food, nothing to do but use my computer and listen to music, the heat trickling into every pour to account for the sweat coming out. The only way i can describe this feel is trapped… i am all wound up with nowhere to go and this apartment is slowly suffocating me and the only thing i can think to do to keep my thoughts flowing and in order is write, because it’s the only thing that would make sense right now. Part of the problem is the mess… the apartment is a perpetual mess, because no matter how many times i try to clean it there aren’t enough places to put my things. Looking around just makes me feel more tangled, like every little spare piece of crap is exerting its own pull on me like all the tiny people and Gulliver. However, mostly two things are bothering me. The first is that i need a new g-string for my guitar, and my guitar strings are nowhere to be found. This is especially annoying because i was writing a new song that was rather intelligent sounding and i’d like to continue. The other is tonight… this empty messy apartment and me and all the thoughts i’ve got bottled up in my head. Empty, messy, and bottled up are all things i’d like to be different. But, anyway, i just had to type something to release some of all this pent up furious energy, and i apologize if it sounds like some awful teenage diary rant, but i just want tomorrow to get here. Now.

So, i’m an idiot. Did i mention that? All this time i thought the little “battery” light on my guitar’s preamp meant the battery was functioning, when in fact it meant that it wasn’t functioning very much at all. Somehow, reversing the polarity of the preamp solved this problem temporarily, and after fooling around with that for a little while i wised up and bought some 9-volt batteries and now my amp sounds sweet and beautiful like it’s supposed to sound instead of all fussy like it was sounding with the low-battery pre-amp. Right. So, now i’m sitting here having my own spring jam, because it’s beautiful outside and the light shines just right on the middle of my floor so that it seems like a spotlight. This is so much better than that dumb concert i did on Thursday….
