Guide to Loki

 

This Guide to Loki represents the first time I have ever tackled building a guide to a fully-fledged villain. That means I was dealing with a character who was never an ongoing star of a run nor a member of a team for over forty years of his existence and many hundreds of appearances… of which I planned to read every single one.

What I realized very early in my reading is that Loki is no Magneto or Doctor Doom.

What I mean by that is that Loki never truly developed as a character from the Silver to the Bronze Age the way Marvel’s other two massively popular villains did. Magneto’s villainy was repetitive in the Silver Age, but once Chris Claremont took him over in the late 70s he began an extended arc of character development that stretched across decades. And, while many of Doctor Doom’s plots are similar, over the years he grew from a recurring antagonist to the mastermind behind some of Marvel’s most signature stories – including a pair of Secret Wars!

Drag Race France Season 1 Episode 2 – Queen Pour Cent: Review & Power Ranking

Welcome to my review and power rankings of the second episode of Drag Race France Season 1 – “Queen Pour Cent”

It was fascinating to watch this episode back-to-back with this week’s “Santa’s School For Girls” episode of All Stars Season 7. On one hand, you have a cast of all-winners and a professional film director turning out a serviceable comedy scene. On the other, you have the second episode of a new franchise directed by a French comedian turning out a farce that was… dare I say… funnier than the All-Winners challenge?!

It could be that the language barrier of my remedial French means I was reacting more to the silliness of the French queens than their delivery. However, I think it was more the case that their scene was structured for broad comedy and inexperienced actors. It didn’t have as much plot and rarely had more than three queens on stage at the same time. The entire concept was to anchor it with a pair of droll characters and then rotate through a number of ridiculous, stereotypical third wheels to their comedy tricycle.

It was a fun exercise to watch, both in rehearsal and in the final edit. And, speaking of things this franchise is already improving upon, I believe it is the first version of Drag Race to feature Drag Kings(!!!) for its rock bank mini-challenge (which was otherwise inconsequential).

On the runway, Dites-le avec des fleurs (“say it with flowers”), I think there was a noticeable gap between queens with artsy-craftsy presentations versus those with more-elevated fashion looks. I’m not current on my French drag and queer culture, so I can’t present any well-formed theories on that.

However, my guess would be that a lot of cabaret drag is effectively burlesque drag – with an emphasis on dancing, strip-teasing, and humor. It’s clear that a queen like La Grande Dame is coming from a different fashion perspective than cerebral players like Paloma and Elips. Neither are bad, but they have different origins.

One surprise this episode delivered was that Lolita Banana may be the queen to tip-toe between both sides of that performer vs. fashion divide. Her runway garment and presentation was memorable and she is one of the full-time showgirls in this cast alongside La Briochée and La Big Bertha.

I will be curious to see if this runway gap tightens or widens as the season wears on, and how that might effect who sticks around. Based on this episode, runway counts for a lot! It placed one fine queen in the bottom and saved one of the worst queens from the lip sync.

With my general impressions of the episode out of the way, let’s get to my Drag Race France Episode 2 Power Rankings! There’s quite the shake-up from my week one power rankings – especially considering 3 of my Top 4 got tough critiques in this episode!

Get your armor equipped, my friends, because I’m back with another review of the Dungeons & Dragons and 5e-Compatible Kickstarter projects!

Last week I looked at all of the projects that were the closest to their pledge deadlines, and I wound up backing several. This week, I’m reviewing every one of 18 live 5e projects on Kickstarter to figure out which are the must-buys, the best values, and the most unusual concepts.

For many of these projects I’m viewing them through the 9-point criteria I established in my recent essay, “What makes a good Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition official release or 5e-Compatible supplement?” However, for some of them that are hyper-specific – like just one dungeon or just potions I’ve skipped the criteria and got right to the point.

If any creators of those projects happen to swing by: congratulations on your awesome work! I might have a few critiques about your campaign page, but your labor of love is still an impressive effort.

Music Monday: “Bliss” – Amber Mark

There’s something about an R&B song with wah pedal and an every-quarter-note rhythm that I cannot turn off.

I blame TLC’s “Waterfalls.”

That’s the first comparison that came to mind when I heard “Bliss” by Amber Mark, even if her song is much more driving than the languid, trickling feel of “Waterfalls.”

I was already sold on Amber Mark’s 2022 debut full-length, Three Dimensions Deep, long before I hit “Bliss” at track 16. I dig the consistent Neo-Soul groove of the entire record, which backs Mark with tangible instrumental performances blended with programmed beats. I love

It’s “Bliss” that I keep coming back to. There’s something about that hypnotic “wah wah wah wah” and the more-organic drum sound that draws me in and keeps playing in my brain when I wake up in the morning.

Also, not for nothing, I love a chorus that starts with a great “Oh!” full of stacked harmony. And, I love a second verse that messes with your expectations about the song’s rhythm. And I love a song about something commonplace that juxtaposes it with the fantastic or galactic, as she does in the sublime first verse:

Conversations, sexual tension
Taking me to new dimensions
Outer space, nights at my place, oh
You teach me things I never knew
A crush don’t have to leave a bruise
My soul is shining, changed my life with perfect timing

There’s something about “Bliss.” The wah pedal and the every-quarter-note rhythm might have caught my attention in the first place, but there’s so much more than that in Amber Mark’s song.

That includes a full issue-by-issue recap of all of her more than 180 appearances before becoming a hero, a full collecting guide to her time as The Mighty Thor, plus coverage of her current heroic mantle of Valkyrie.

Jane makes 198 primary appearances in her own titles or in Thor titles, plus her time as a team member in Avengers, and many guest appearances from the 1960s through the present day. If you’re just interested in the core of Jane Foster, I’ve got that covered in a “Greatest Hits” section that distills 40 years of continuity down to just 18 key appearances as a civilian prior to her time as The Mighty Thor in 2014.

This won’t read as well as a standalone as it does with the build-up from the “Saga of the Mighty Thor” volume, but it is fantastic material!
