The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula Power Rankings – Season 2, Episode 1

November 4, 2017 by krisis

Your eyes do not deceive you – I’m back, back, back, back again with more drag power rankings for you!

What rankings? Well, even though RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 3 does not debut until January, it’s no longer the only drag show you can stream to the comfort of your own couch.

Dragula Season 2Hennies, please let me introduce you to Season 2 of Dragula – the search for the next drag super monster! This new season is free to watch on World of Wonder’s YouTube channel!

I’ve loved horror even longer than I’ve loved drag, ever since the first chapter book I ever read was a children’s version of Dracula. Unfortunately, the modern horror landscape tends to be focused on gore and jump scares, and not a lot of the macabre suspense I dug as a kid.

Dragula brings that creepiness and sense of macabre – along with the heaping of camp that comes with a great drag performance.

Rather than preparing for an outlandish challenge in each episode, contestants prep a horrific look that adheres to a specific scary theme – like zombies or sea monsters. Then, rather than present the look on the runway, the queens bring their them to life on a genuinely scary floor show that’s sometimes in a challenging environment, like the middle of the desert!

Finally, and I do mean finally, there are no lip syncs for your life here. Queens are eliminated via Extermination! This season, they first face their fears in a frightening challenge against other low-ranking queens. Then, the bottom queen (or queens!) films her own creepy, campy death scene at the hands of hosts The Boulet Brothers!

The queens of Season 1 turned out some amazing looks despite the show’s low budget. This first Season 2 episode is worlds different – it’s shot in much higher quality, and the queens all bring highly-detailed horror looks filled with prosthetic make-up and practical effects.

Enough explanation – let’s get to the show and the rankings! This week each queen was tasked with turning out a horrific, Hellraiser-inspired Cenobite – you probably know the most-famous one as “Pinhead.” Cenobites are sadomasochistic extra-dimensional beings who take the shape of humanoids whose bodies are consumed in an endless state of half-torture, half elaborate art.

Crushing Comics, S01E04 – Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 3

November 4, 2017 by krisis

On today’s episode of Crushing Comics, I had the randomly luck into unwrapping one of my favorite runs of all time. Hear about why I love it so much as I retell the uncanny origin of my Crushing Comics collecting guides.

Episode 4 features Uncanny X-Men Omnibus, Vol. 3 (Amazon / eBay) as covered by my Guide to Claremont-era X-Men.

New For Patrons: Watchmen – The Definitive Collecting Guide

November 3, 2017 by krisis

Today I launched a somewhat unusual guide directly to Patrons of Crushing Krisis – Watchmen: The Definitive Collecting Guide.

“But, Peter,” you might say, “Watchmen is only 12 issues long. How does that warrant an entire guide?

I’m so glad you asked. This guide does more than break out the many ways the original Watchmen series is collected. It also has information about the genesis of the Watchmen characters. It explains the differences between the three different cuts of the film, including one that incorporates the Tales of the Black Freighter material. It covers DC’s 2012 return to the Watchemen with Before Watchmen.

Much like my Complete Guide to Batman by Grant Morrison, this page is something I’ve always sought on the internet but never quite found. I look forward to adding more to it as the upcoming Doomsday Clock event as it unfurls.

This guide will become available to the general public in a few weeks to coincide with the release of the first issue of Doomsday Clock. Want it before then? Patrons get early access to every guide, including extended access to special Patrons’ Choice guides like Scarlet Witch.

birdfriends

November 3, 2017 by krisis

Major Plot twist: Living in New Zealand has turned me into an avid bird-watcher and amateur bird-song identifier.

This is a big twist because I do not have an especially positive history of avian/human relations. This is what I had to say for our fine, feathered friends the last time I moved to a new house:

That’s not the nature of my problem. Birds are fine as a concept. I just don’t like things that make uninvited noise (other than, obviously, me). Birds fall into the same offensive category as small dogs, train tracks, and babies.

Based on that assessment, you might be a bit nervous about me moving to a country with a serious stock of birds and where bats are the only native land mammals. Bats!

Yet, I’m living a bird-loving kiwi life. I send chats to E about cool bird songs I hear when she’s not at home and can frequently found browsing Birds of New Zealand to try to identify the ones I spot on our deck or feasting on snails from our garden.

The only way I can explain it is that birds here have beautiful, varied songs. Key word: varied. The birds of Philadelphia didn’t have songs so much as rude catcalls that they screeched repetitively at the top of their birdy lungs.

“CHIRP. CHIRP. CHIRP. MOTHERFUCKING CHIRP.”

They’d all gather around my house starting just after 5am and start their shouting all at once. There was nothing beautiful or remarkable about it. It was like the world’s worst noise machine.

To be fair, those are some of these insistent asshole birds in New Zealand, but I think the other birds must shun them or eat their food or something, because I rarely hear them singing. Maybe it’s simply an evolutionary thing.

Tui are one of the most-common NZ-only birds, and one of the first I started noticing while we were living in our Air BnB house. They possess a double larynx, which gives them an uncannily large range of vocalization. There’s not a lot of repeats on tui radio.

When we we were looking at houses, we met the New Zealand wood pigeon. It is a hilariously, outlandishly large bird, maybe four times the size of the pigeon of the flying rat variety you see back in East Coast urban spaces back in the US. It’s husky, low hoot matches its comedic appearance as well as its rather humorous habits, such as getting drunk enough on fermented berries that they fall out of trees.

There is an even greater variety of birds here at our more permanent home, as we’re not in an urban area and also much higher up. I’d say we hear at least six or seven distinct bird calls each day, at least.

One particularly mysterious bird living in the bushes surrounding our house has such a beautiful call that I crave hearing it. Its bright, trebly tone sweeps down and into a throaty alto and then back up again, with fluttery vibrato throughout. If I notice this mystery bird’s song ringing out I will literally drop what I am doing and rush to a window to try to spot it, to no avail.

What I find most interesting about the situation isn’t the variety of birds or their beautiful calls, but my sudden change of heart about having them all around. It represents a complete shift from what I would have sworn was a make-or-break aspect of a new house just a few months ago – being relatively birdless.

As it turns out, it’s not just brands and habits that change when you move to a new place. Sometimes it’s your whole philosophy on what constitutes noise versus song.

Crushing Comics, S01E03 – The Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus

November 3, 2017 by krisis

It’s my second random unwrapping of a brick of book from my hardcovers shelf, and today’s selection is a doozy – it’s Marvel’s Infinity Gauntlet!

Watch as I recap the cosmic history of Jim Starlin and Silver Surfer, plus debate on if I’m going to remove the book from its plastic wrap.

Episode 3 features The Infinity Gauntlet Omnibus (Amazon / eBay) as covered by the Guide to Thanos and the Marvel Events Guide.

For an even more in depth look at this awesome book, check out this classic video from friend-of-CK Ryley Moore AKA “The Omnibus Collector.”
