Guide to What If? – now available to the all readers!

December 25, 2024 by krisis

Happy Holidays, Marvel fans! Today I’m thrilled to release one of my favorite new guides of the past year with all readers: my Guide to What If?! This guide was made possible through the support of Patrons of Crushing Krisis!

Guide to Marvel’s What If?

This Marvel What If? Guide includes so much more than a list of collected editions of Marvel’s big two ongoing What If? series from 1977 and 1989.

First, it breaks down what the “What If” is in every single issue of those nearly-200 ongoing issues and what issues are often collected alongside other existing stories.

Then, it includes every “What If” mini-series and one-shot Marvel has produced over the past 50 years. Sometimes those single issues weren’t released under a specific banner or title, but as a series of disconnected one-shots. That can make them hard to track down – take it from someone who researched every one of them! This Guide explains all of that, including the “What If?” question behind each issue and how they were collected.

Whether you’re looking for a specific “What If?” story or trying to read every issue in order of release, this guide has the answers you’re looking for. It’s one of over 150 guides that are part of the Crushing Comics Guide to Marvel Comics, covering the vast majority of Marvel titles, teams, and solo characters.

Updated: Guide to Avengers (1963-1996)

September 15, 2023 by krisis

This year celebrates the 60th anniversary of several major Marvel Comics publishing milestones. Yesterday I shared an update to my Silver Age X-Men Guide to mark the 60th Anniversary of X-Men (1963) #1, with a cover date of September 1963 (though it actually hit the stands in July – cover dates functioned as a “sell by” date in the Silver Age). The X-Men weren’t the only team to hit the newsstands in the middle of 1963, because the same month featured the debut of Marvel’s iconic supergroup – and another one of their most-iconic franchises – The Avengers! Today I’ve not only updated but completely rebuilt one of the most important Crushing Comics guides – my Guide to Avengers (1963-1996)!

Guide to Avengers (1963-1996)Guide to Avengers (1963-1996)

I originally launched this guide back in November of 2011 as my first guide to comics outside of the X-Men line! It has been incrementally updated many times over since then. However, I never fundamentally changed the structure of the guide as Marvel’s collection strategy evolved to include more omnibuses, comprehensive coverage of universe-spanning events, and the amazing Epic Collection line to cover all of the gaps in each long-running series. The Avengers have transformed from an occasionally-collected title with major gaps – especially in the 90s – to a 400+ issue title with just a handful of issues left uncollected.

Today, I have completely rebuilt this guide from the ground up! What does that mean? Not only did I list every collected edition of Avengers (1963), but I also did all of the following… [Read more…] about Updated: Guide to Avengers (1963-1996)

Updated: Guide to Exiles

April 21, 2023 by krisis

This week I have an X-Men guide update that’s not for an X-Men guide, although it’s actually an extremely X-Men guide. Confused yet? Hopefully this update will help alleviate your confusion, because today I rebuilt my Guide to Exiles!

Guide to Exiles

Here’s my simple pitch for Exiles: Imagine if Marvel’s What If? had a single team visiting all of the many realities it explored, and most of them were mutants.

(Or, if you’re as old as I am, picture Sliders, but with mutants!)

That aptly describes Exiles as it was originally launched by Judd Winick and Mike McKone. It was anchored by the beloved Blink from Age of Apocalypse and featured a version of Morph who resembled his X-Men: The Animated Series incarnation, but all of the other characters were alternate versions of Marvel-616 mutants. Or, in one case, a potential next generation of mutants with the introduction of Nocturne – Nightcrawler’s daughter!

Part of the enduring charm of the original 100-issue run of Exiles is that it’s a straight sprint that isn’t involved in any Marvel-616 mutant shenanigans. It included mutants, but it was NOT an X-book tangled up with the rest of the line. Other than a single story in X-Men Unlimited and a three-issue dalliance with House of M, Exiles was 100% self-contained from issues #1-99 & Annual 1.

Then, Chris Claremont happened. [Read more…] about Updated: Guide to Exiles

Updated: Guide to X-23, Laura Kinney – The All-New Wolverine

April 14, 2023 by krisis

This week’s X-Men Guide Update is my first major update to one of the last major X-Men pages I launched! At the time this character was early in a star-making, joyous run taking over a legacy name from her adopted (and maybe actual) father. Little did I know how much she would go through in the next half decade, including flip-flopping over her codename, being trapped in an alternate reality, being trapped in a time bubble, and… well, the next bit would be a spoiler! Of course, I’m talking about my Guide to X-23 – Wolverine!

Guide to X-23 – Wolverine

Guide to X-23

I’ve always been a major fan of X-23, ever since first encountering here in the murderous 2008 run of X-Force and then backtracking to read her entire chronological history exactly as it is presented in this guide.

Laura and Logan in X-Men (2019) #5, shortly before she enters the world of the Children of the Vault. That’s why I was so pleased when Logan’s death stuck for four whole years, during which time Laura Kinney enjoyed the spotlight as Wolverine. It was just as thrilling to see her and Logan reunited at the beginning of Jonathan Hickman’s run and for Logan to affirm that she still held the title, only for Hickman to snatch her out of our grasp later than issue as she became trapped inside the accelerated world of the Children of the Vault for nearly two years of publishing.

Yet, it turned out to be worth out – as Laura emerged to be the Wolverine of the main X-Men squad, while Logan continued to anchor his combined mutant CIA/FBI in X-Force.

As I caught up on more-recent Wolverine reading to update this guide, I discovered the recent totally shocking revelation from just a few months ago! I won’t spoil it here, but it definitely changes the game for Laura’s character – and, it makes this the perfect time to binge her entire reading order.

It was interesting to revisit this guide, which I first crafted in the early days of my Patreon campaign. That was the beginning of my era of tackling solo characters with splintered bibliographies by summarizing all of their appearances as I still do today. Yet, this had many hallmarks of my older guides, like a vague Table of Contents, collections listed without ISBNs and digital links, and crowded reading order sections that didn’t separate recollections like omnibuses and Complete Collections out into their own section.

After a full day of work, my Guide to X-23 – Wolverine is now much tidier, updated with every notable appearance, and annotated with Marvel Unlimited links to help you with your next binge read.

Updated: Guide to X-Force (+ Guide to Sabretooth, for Patrons of CK)

April 7, 2023 by krisis

My weekly X-Men guide updates continue as I revisit one of the guides I rebuilt in 2022! Does that make this update too easy? Well, that is sorta the point of getting everything back on schedule again, but don’t worry – there’s a reason my band’s motto used to be “Make It Harder.” That’s why today I not only have an update to my Guide to X-Force, but also an update to my Guide to Sabretooth exclusively for Patrons of CK!
