DC Omnibus Announcement: Animal Man by Jamie Delano and Steve Pugh Omnibus

We’re seeing even more omnibus announcements roll out from DC Comics in anticipation of their 2027 January to June catalog arriving at the end of this week. Their second omnibus announcement for 2027 shows off DC’s renewed commitment to finishing omnibus lines, as this book pulls us within a single collected edition of completing a famous Vertigo title that only had its most famous run collected for a long time: Animal Man by Jamie Delano and Steve Pugh Omnibus!

When his ongoing series began in 1988, Animal Man was a deeply obscure Silver Age DC hero with just a handful of appearances to his name. That included being a member of a group literally called “The Forgotten Heroes” who popped up in Superman to remind him (and readers) that they still existed.

Animal Man (1988) launched before Vertigo was an imprint at DC comics. However, Vertigo energy had already been established by the long-running Swamp Thing and was being echoed in other titles launching that year – which included both The Sandman (1988) and Hellblazer (1988)!

The launch of Animal Man (1988) was helmed by Grant Morrison and… the rest is history. Morrison echoed a touch of Alan Moore’s deconstruction from Miracleman, blending it with social commentary on the environment and the natural world and building up to the most famous self-insert in all of comics.

And then the run kept running! by Peter Milligan and then Tom Veitch & Steve Dillon penned the next two years of the title, from Animal Man (1988) #27-50, which we received in omnibus just a few months ago. Every Missing Blue Beetle, Doctor Fate, Deathstroke Omnibus & More, Mapped | 2025 Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus Poll

It’s time to map the DC Universe! In June, I’ll be joining with Near Mint Condition to launch the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 2nd Annual Poll! This post explains every DC Hero from A to E I haven’t already covered in other posts – including Blue Beetle, Captain Atom, Doctor Fate, & Deathstroke omnibus mapping – all of which will appear as options on the 2025 poll.

Through the end of May I’ll be covering DC entire publishing history by mapping missing omnibus volumes to fill in every gap in your DC oversize shelf! That’s all leading to the kickoff of the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 2nd Annual Poll on Near Mint Condition the first week of June.

Vertigo Heroes & The Sandman Universe Omnibus Mapping for the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 1st Annual Poll

It’s time to explore the darker side of DC – Vertigo heroes and the Sandman Universe omnibuses! I’ll be loosely mapping missing and most-wanted DC omnibus volumes every day until May 19th! Then, on the 19th, I’ll be joining with Near Mint Condition to launch the first annual Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus Annual Poll! This post covers omnibuses missing from DC’s in-continuity Vertigo titles – and not creator-owned Vertigo work.

This post explains potential Vertigo heroes and Sandman Universe Omnibus Mapping for votes on the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 1st Annual Secret Ballot. I’m posting all of these maps before the poll begins to give people the time to consider their favorites, correct our mapping mistakes, and catch books I might have missed.

What characters am I including in this broad category? Any Vertigo character who originated in DC continuity or later returned to it. That includes Animal Man, Hellblazer, Shade The Changing Man, Swamp Thing, and the extended Sandman Universe (including Black Orchid, Books of Magic, The Dreaming, Lucifer, & Sandman Mystery Theatre).

Launched just moments ago to my Crushing Comics Club Patrons is a guide to my favorite New 52 hero, Animal Man!

I feel like I’ve always been aware of Animal Man, but had never read a single issue of him prior to Jeff Lemire’s wonderful run in New 52. Putting this guide together was an eye-opening experience about Animal Man’s history, and about ultimately how much of a blank slate he became in the decade after the end of his famous Vertigo series launched by Grant Morrison. The guide includes his every appearance, with brief descriptions of his action to accompany nearly every issue.
