New Comics & Collected Editions Releases: DC Comics – May 15 2024

May 10, 2024 by krisis

It’s the 20th new comic book day of the new year! This post covers DC Comics May 15 2024 releases, which actually hit comic stores on Tuesday May 14 2024. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering DC Comics May 8 2024 new releases.

(DC is still releasing their comics on Tuesday until the start of July, but I think most folks think of Wednesday as release day, so that’s how I’m labelling my posts until then.)

This week in DC Comics: all-new iconic Superman villains, an all-in Justice League omnibus, best-ever Poison Ivy, Blue Beetle swings big, Outsiders after the reveal, the House of Brainiac continues, Batman & Dylan Dog concludes, Hal reunites with the Corps, and more!

This list includes every comic and digital comic out from DC this week, plus collected editions including omnibus, hardcover, paperback, and digest-sized formats. I recap and review every new single issue. Plus, for every new release, I’ll point you to the right guide within my Crushing Comics Guide to DC Comics to find out how to collect each character in full – and, if a guide is linked from this post, that means it is updated through the present day!

DC Comics May 15 2024 Collected EditionsAdventures of Superman: George Pérez 2024 hardcover, a DC Comics May 15 2024 new release

Adventures of Superman: George Pérez
(2024 hardcover, ISBN 978-1779525871/ digital)
See Guide to Action Comics (Post-Crisis, 1987 – Present) or Guide to Superman (Post-Crisis, 1987 – Present). This collects George Pérez’s work on Superman from two different transitional periods – from Action Comics in 1989 just after the year of “Action Comics Weekly” (and just before the Triangle Era), and his launch of Superman (2011) for DC New 52.

The late-80s material is much more compelling, but it’s just starting to be covered in omnibus right now – so the only reason to pick this up is if you’re a major George Pérez fan rather than a huge Super-fan.

Batman: Fortress
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1779525086 / digital)
DC’s solicit text calls this Gary Whitta & Darick Robertson mini-series an “Elsewords-style” story about Batman breaking into the Fortress of Solitude, which means it’s not in current DC continuity.

As a result, I haven’t caught up on this one – but I’ve seen it savaged by fans online. While we should all make up our own minds (when do I ever agree with fans online?), there’s also a surplus of fantastic Batman material right now – both in and out of continuity. For an easy-to-pick up Batman series, check out my rapturous reaction to Batman / Dylan Dog (2023), below.

Justice League International Omnibus Vol. 3
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1779525642)
See Guide to Justice League. This isn’t just an International omnibus, it’s a dream League omnibus. That’s because as this omnibus line has pressed on past the initial run of Justice League International it has collected everything Justice League in the Post-Crisis era. It collects Justice League America (1989), Justice League Europe (1989), and Justice League Quarterly (1990).

This volume adds some 00s era material by Keith Giffen, John Dematteis, & Kevin Maguire, which makes me slightly nervous this is a final volume. Fingers crossed that DC keeps up this all-in omnibus line – you can see the mapping in my Justice League Omnibus Mapping post from earlier this week!

Wonder Woman Omnibus Mapping for the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 1st Annual Poll

May 5, 2024 by krisis

Most Wanted DC Omnibus - Wonder Woman Omnibus MappingWelcome back to mapping, my friends! From now until May 19, I’ll be loosely mapping missing and most-wanted DC omnibus volumes every day! Then, on the 19th, I’ll be joining with Near Mint Condition to launch the first annual Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus Annual Poll! This first post covers every missing Wonder Woman omnibus, from the Golden Age to the present day.

This post explains potential Wonder Woman Omnibus Mapping for votes on the Tigereyes Most Wanted DC Omnibus 1st Annual Secret Ballot. I’m posting all of these maps before the poll begins to give people the time to consider their favorites, correct our mapping mistakes, and catch books I might have missed.

Why start with Wonder Woman? Because I know her the best out of the entire DC line! I own, have read, or have mapped every single issue in this post – which won’t be true for any other DC character or team!

If you don’t know DC well enough to know what to vote for, stick around for my explanations! Learn why the team behind the poll decided on these books and titles – including giving us feedback if we missed the mark.

If voting is now open, you can use this as your crib sheet! Or… just find some great comics to read!

Remember: These mappings are just my suggestion of how DC could assemble these books. They are meant to help you decide on your votes and build your personal reading list, but your vote on the poll is NOT an endorsement of my specific map. It’s a vote in favor of DC creating a book with that title or covering that period.

High-effort, heavily-researched, over-the-top comics posts like this one are made possible via the support of Patrons of Crushing Krisis. For less than the cost of a single comic issue a month you can fuel my in-depth comics coverage, plus gain access to dozens of exclusive collecting guides & reading orders – including all of the Crushing Comics Guide to DC Comics.

Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan – The Definitive Reading Order and Collecting Guide

The definitive, chronological, and up-to-date guide and trade reading order on collecting Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel comic books via omnibuses and trade paperback graphic novels. A part of Crushing Comics Guide to the Marvel Universe. Last updated November 2024 with titles scheduled for release through March 2025. Looking for Carol Danvers as Ms. Marvel (and Captain Marvel)? Head to the Guide to Captain Marvel – Carol Danvers!

It’s fitting that the title of Captain Marvel has passed through the hands of so many Marvel heroes, since it tacitly implies the holder as a mascot for the unified Marvel Universe, just as Captain America stands as a patriotic symbol of America.Ms. Marvel (2014) #13 Textless cover

Similarly, it makes sense that the title of Ms. Marvel – originally tied to women’s liberation in the 1970s – has been passed down to a new hero.

The many long-time comic readers know Carol Danvers as the original Ms. Marvel, thought she graduated to being Captain Marvel in 2012. That status was cemented by her appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with her Captain title. It’s likely she’ll never be a “Ms.” again.

With the name freed up by Danvers, in 2014 Marvel created a new hero to take up the mantel. Kamala Khan is a teenage girl, a Pakistani-American, a major Carol Danvers fan, and a dormant Inhuman whose shape-changing powers were activated by the aftermath of Marvel’s Infinity event.

Khan’s title is a modern-day delight – a perfect update of the teenage fumbling of early Spider-Man to the modern day for a young women of color trying to live up to the standards of her immigrant parents while forging her own identity.

Kamala Khan was allowed to exist on her own with little intervention in 2014-2015 – she makes few guest appearances outside of her first series. That changed in 2015 with the launch of her second series, after Marvel’s Secret War. Kamala returned with a much higher profile both with fans and within the Marvel Universe. That mean becoming a member of team titles (both Avengers and the Champions), participating in events, and appearing as a more frequent guest star.

Still, you don’t have to pay attention to that! G. Willow Wilson’s tenure ran for more than 50 issues, making a compelling, straight-forward run you can enjoy without the distraction of Kamala’s other appearances. A follow-up series by Saladin Ahmed is more connected to Kamala’s membership the The Champions, but it can still be read on its own.
