Marvel Omnibus Announcement: Runaways by Rainbow Rowell and Predator vs. The Marvel Universe

May 27, 2026 by krisis Leave a Comment

Near Mint Condition recently announced two of our first new Marvel omnibus volumes for January 2027, and they’re both a bit unexpected: Runaways by Rainbow Rowell and Predator vs. The Marvel Universe!

Runaways (2017) #1 by Rainbow RowellRunaways by Rainbow Rowell Omnibus is one of my favorite Marvel runs of the past decade. Rowell’s run follows a group of characters who were always more entertaining as found family with interpersonal drama than they were as superheroes.

Under her pen, they were slightly more grown up but even more unsure of themselves than ever. If you love a Manga-esque slice of life drama set against a Marvel backdrop, this is a book you’ll dig. This is effectively Runaways Omnibus Vol. 3… and there is no Vol. 2 yet! See how it fits into continuity and how it has been collected already in my Guide to Runaways.

Seeing this Runaways book on the schedule tells me that the Sensational She-Hulk by Rainbow Rowell omnibus sold at-or-better-than expectations for Marvel. Runaways is not a seller on its own, so there isn’t a big motivation to put it on the release schedule. And, if Rowell’s She-Hulk underperformed and Marvel truly wanted to release a Runaways book as some kind of publishing or media tie-in, this could easily be the gap-filling Runaways Omnibus Vol. 2 instead of Rowell’s run… and, they’ve had 8yrs to publish that book since Vol. 1 was released!).

The fact that this early 2027 Rowell’s Runaways is a tell that Marvel thinks it will be a comparable seller to She-Hulk, whereas they don’t have a similar comparable on the Runaways Vol. 2 material (especially since that would involve marketing it under Joss Whedon’s name).

Predator vs. The Marvel Universe Omnibus is an unexpected omnibus because it’s so short – just 17 issues of Predators beating up on Wolverine, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and the Marvel Universe as a whole. I guess once you graduate to beating up the whole Marvel Universe there’s nowhere else to go… though I would’ve dug Predator vs. Krakoa, Predator vs. Asgard, and Predator vs. Guardians of the Galaxy!

Alas, we never got those. Each of the four titles in this book had some high points, but I wouldn’t call any of them modern classics that demanded an omnibus. See my Guide to Predator (eventually) for collection information.

Personally, I am surprised to see such a slim modern Predator book before a classic Alien vs Predator book. Maybe sales on the classic line Alien and Predator omnis were soft enough to make Marvel shy on an AVP omni?

New Comics & Collected Editions Releases: Marvel Comics – May 22 2024

May 18, 2024 by krisis

It’s the 21st new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics May 22 2024 releases. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering Marvel Comics May 15 2024 new releases.

This week in Marvel Comics: Gang War collected, Spencer Cap in omnibus, Blood Hunt continues, Fall of the House of X concludes, She-Hulk’s space vacay takes a turn. Immortal Thor fights a PR war, and more!

This list includes every comic and digital comic out from Marvel this week, plus collected editions in omnibus, hardcover, paperback, and digest-sized formats. I recap and review every new single issue. Plus, for every new release, I’ll point you to the right guide within my Crushing Comics Guide to Marvel Comics to find out how to collect each character in full – and, if a guide is linked from this post, that means it is updated through the present day!

Marvel Comics May 22 2024 Collected EditionsAmazing Spider-Man (2022) Volume 9 - Gang War, a Marvel Comics May 22 2024 new release

The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 9: Gang War
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302954604 / digital)
See Guide to Spider-Man – Peter Parker (2018 – Present). This collects all of the core of the Gang War story from Amazing Spider-Man (2022). While there were a lot of tie-ins to this story, the plots in books like Spider-Woman and Luke Cage didn’t really drive the plot.

The Avengers Epic Collection: The Evil Reborn
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302955236 / digital)
See Guide to Avengers (1963 – 1996). This Epic collects several different authors writing a year on either side of Avengers (1963) #200, including George Pérez! The initial burst of this has been collected in the past as “Heart of Stone,” but otherwise this material has only ever been in Marvel Masterworks!

Also, it includes the intensely problematic issue #200, which Chris Claremont immediately rebuked with his all-time classic introduction of Rogue in Annual 10 – also in this book!

Captain America by Nick Spencer Omnibus Vol. 2
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302953706 / digital)
See Guide to Captain America – Steve Rogers. This collects the conclusion of Nick Spencer’s two-year, multi-title run on Captain American across Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers, and the Secret Empire event.

However, this isn’t a “Secret Empire Omnibus” – it only includes the core 12 issues of the event. I’ll be very curious to hear about the reading order of this turns out, since it’s all by Spencer and he certainly wrote it in a specific reading order. New Comics & Collected Editions Releases: Marvel Comics – May 1 2024

It’s the 18th new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics May 1 2024 releases. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering Marvel Comics April 24 2024 new releases.

This week in Marvel Comics: Blood Hunt begins, Captain America de-iced, Daredevil Unmasked, the improbable X-Men 2099, Deadpool & Wolverine go to war, Iron Man & Magneto team up, and more!

Marvel Comics May 1 2024 Collected EditionsCaptain America Omnibus Vol. 1, a Marvel Comics May 1 2024 new release

Captain America Omnibus Vol. 1
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302957995 / digital)
See Guide to Captain America. This omnibus collects the start of Cap’s Silver Age return – though, since it is based on the Masterworks mapping, it omits his actual return in Avengers (1963) #4.

We go straight from him despairing over a photo of Bucky in Tales of Suspense (1959) #59 to fighting Baron Zemo in Tales of Suspense (1959) #60. Even if Lee & Kirby lean on action-oriented plots, there are still those moments of Steve being a man out of time trying to absorb the modern day and its new challenges.

Carnage Vol. 1: Born Again
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302955014 / digital)
See Guide to Carnage. This is the very creepy kickoff of Torunn Grønbekk’s 2023 Carnage series, which finds the Carnage symbiote getting back to Earth after nearly attaining godhood and deciding to return to what it knows best – serial killing, one victim at a time.

Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – The Art of the Movie
(2024 hardcover, ISBN 978-1302956592)
See Guide to Ant-Man.

Mighty Marvel Masterworks: Daredevil Vol. 3: Unmasked
(2024 digest-size paperback, ISBN 978-1302954284 / digital)
See Guide to Daredevil. Marvel’s digest-sized Silver Age collection presses on to the third year of early Daredevil comics. I’m somewhat surprised Marvel extended the Mighty Masterworks line to Daredevil, as his early stories aren’t considered to be particularly significant.

She-Hulk by Rainbow Rowell Vol. 4: Jen-Sational
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302957117 / digital)
See Guide to She-Hulk. This is labeled “Volume 4” despite being the first collection of Sensation She-Hulk (2023) because it picks up directly from the end ofRowell & Company’s 2022 She-Hulk series. While you could pick this up and easily follow it with no preamble, the 15 issues of the prior series are absolutely delightful slice-of-life romance stuff with a just-right amount of punching. New Comics & Collected Editions: Marvel Comics – March 6 2024

February 29, 2024 by krisis

It’s the 10th new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics March 6 2024 releases. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering Marvel Comics February 28 2024 new releases.

This week in Marvel Comics: a major Moon Knight omnibus, Dark Droids collections, the new arc of MacKay’s Strange, Iman Vellani’s return to Ms. Marvel, and more!

This list includes every comic and digital comic out from Marvel this week, plus collected editions in omnibus, hardcover, paperback, and digest-sized formats. For each new release, I’ll point you to the right guide within my Crushing Comics Guide to Marvel Comics to find out how to collect each character in full – and, if a guide is linked from this post, that means it is updated through the present day!

Marvel Comics March 6 2024 Collected EditionsMoon Knight: Marc Spector Omnibus Vol. 2, released by Marvel Comics March 6 2024

The Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection, Vol. 5: The Secret of the Petrified Tablet [reprint]
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302957810 / digital)
See Guide to Spider-Man – Peter Parker (1963 – 2018). It’s less interesting that Marvel is reprinting this Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection of issues #68-85 & Annual 5 and more interesting that this is when they are reprinting it. The first printing of this book was just four years ago, and it means Marvel has gotten the first five Epics back into print in a three-year span.

I think that’s really interesting, considering they also now have the Mighty Marvel Masterworks in play to cover this Silver Age material. It shows a real commitment to making their most-historic comics evergreen in an affordable format. Take note DC.

Daredevil Modern Era Epic Collection, Vol. 2: Underboss
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302956332 / digital)
See Guide to Daredevil. Speaking of interesting Epic Collections, this second volume of Epics covering Daredevil from 1998 to present is the first time issues #20-25 have ever been collected continuously alongside issues #16-19 & 26-30, which are by Bendis.

Plus, it collects Daredevil: Ninja (2000) #1-3! This is what the Modern Epic collections ought to be doing – not just parroting existing mediocre maps of Complete Collections.

Mighty Marvel Masterworks: Captain America Vol. 3: To Be Reborn
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302954321 / digital)
See Guide to Captain America – Steve Rogers. In an unusual twist, this Mighty Masterworks line is now behind what was collected in the original hardcover Masterworks of the same volume number. The two lines aren’t meant to match up with each other, but I’ve been working from the expectation that these books would go slightly more aggressively to cover more material, faster.

Moon Knight: Marc Spector Omnibus Vol. 2
(2024 oversize hardcover, ISBN 978-1302956899 / digital)
See Guide to Moon Knight. This is a big deal, y’all! This omnibus collects the end of Moon Knight’s 90s series for the first time, as well as his subsequent 1998 and 1999 mini-series. It also means we have every issue of Moon Knight in oversize format from his debut through the beginning of Marvel Now at the end of 2012. That’s pretty major! It’s amazing what some MCU exposure can do for the collected edition coverage of a Marvel character who hasn’t had a single continuous series from the Silver Age to present day. New Comics & Collected Editions: Marvel Comics – February 7 2024

February 3, 2024 by krisis

It’s the sixth new comic book day of the new year! This post covers Marvel Comics February 7 2024 releases. Missed last week’s releases? Check out last week’s post covering Marvel Comics January 31 2024 new releases.

(No, you haven’t time-travelled to the future – this post is now a few days earlier to give you an earlier heads up on what’s coming next week and to make way for some other planned posts that will occupy the Tuesday slot.)

This week in Marvel Comics: the debut of a new Ultimate Black Panther, an adventure for Bats the Dog, a treat for Liz Allen super-fans, an almost-completed Captain America Epic line, and more!

Marvel Comics February 7 2024 Collected EditionsCaptain America Epic Collection Vol 21 Twilights Last Gleaming, released by Marvel Comics February 7 2024

Captain America Epic Collection Vol. 21: Twilight’s Last Gleaming
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302956349 / digital)
See Guide to Captain America – Steve Rogers. This is the second-to-last Epic Collection covering Cap’s 1968 series. The final one, Man Without a Country, already exists.

However, I think the bigger news about this collect is that it means we now have the entirety of Mark Gruenwald’s landmark run on the title collected in Epic Collections Volume 12-21. That’s not a big shocker, since Marvel is about to kick off a long-awaited omnibus run of Gruenwald’s Cap, so it made sense for them to wrap up the Epics first. This run is to pre-2000 Cap what Brubaker’s is to post-2000 Cap – lengthy, defining, and essential.

We only need TWO more Epics to complete the coverage of Cap’s 1968 title (Vol. 7-8), but we could be waiting for a while since now we know the classic Epic line will continue to cover his titles through 2004 when Brubaker’s run kicks off the “Modern Epic Collection.”

Cult of Carnage: Misery
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302951986 / digital)
See Guide to Carnage (eventually). Are you a Liz Allen super-fan? I’m not sure how many of you are out there, but this book is for you! Despite the “Carnage” wrapper on the title, this book is all about dissecting Liz Allen’s history, her motivations, and her connection to Harry Osborn. Yeah, there’s also some symbiote nonsense involving a sliver of the Carnage symbiote and Carnage’s various progeny, but if you aren’t interested in Allen and her family this is going to fall flat for you. (And, if you don’t even know who I’m talking about, you should skip it).

Magneto: Magneto Was Right
(2024 paperback, ISBN 978-1302954215 / digital)
See Guide to Magneto. One of Marvel’s many retcon flashback series, this 2023 mini is set during the excellent mid-40s of Claremont’s New Mutants – a fertile period for more Magneto stories, as he was certainly up to a lot back then!
