Crushing Comics S01E079 – childhood scares, Shang-Chi – Master of Kung Fu, Heartbreak Quadrant, & more!

February 28, 2018 by krisis

Get ready – this is my longest and most content-packed video to date!

I begin by recalling what used to scare me as a kid as I unwrap one of the first books I packed back in the states – Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, Volume 2. I unwrap the book from its cellophane and page through live on camera.

This leads me on a lengthy tangent about professional printing processes, including how press sheets word and why expensive books still have printing errors.

Finally, perhaps not realizing how long the episode had already become, I decide to open a random packet of extra books – Image Comics: The Road To Independence, Barrett Stanley’s Heartbreak Quadrant, and the only hard copy version of my novel that exists!

Want to start from the beginning of this season of videos? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 79 features Shang-Chi – Master of Kung Fu Omnibus, Vol. 2 (covered in my Guide to Shang-Chi), Image – The Road to Independence, Heartbreak Quadrant, and Krisis.

Crushing Comics S01E069 – Your Nostalgic Favorites + Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Vol. 1

February 5, 2018 by krisis

I start this episode by explaining my shirt and asking about your nostalgic favorites and if they’ve held up over the years. Then, I unwrap the first of the pair of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu omnibuses. Since I don’t know too much about the magazine content of the issues reprinted here, I dive in and read a few excerpts.

Episode 69 features the Direct Market cover version of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Vol. 1. See how the back-up stories fit in to Shang-Chi’s continuity in the Guide to Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu.

Crushing Comics S01E064 – Master of Kung Fu, Vol. 1 + how Marvel should change their omnibus marketing

January 24, 2018 by krisis

I finally open the first Master of Kung Fu omnibus, and after talking a bit about how Marvel used anthology series in the 70s to audition new heroes, I dig into how Marvel got the marketing of this line of omnibuses so right.

Episode 64 features Master of Kung Fu, Volume 1. Visit the Guide to Shang-Chi to learn more!

Crushing Comics S01E050 – Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Vol. 2 (+ how many times have you moved?)

December 29, 2017 by krisis

Today I pull one of the first books I wrapped back in Philly, which leads me to talk about the (relatively limited) number of times I’ve moved in my life – all but two of which are documented here on CK! Plus, how we (or, at least, I) grow to fit the space that I occupy.

After a much longer-than-intended introductory chat, I open an unusual omnibus that’s as much a collection of magazines as it is comic stories – including the first stories of Daughters of the Dragon, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing!

Want to start from the beginning of this season of videos? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 50 features Deadly Hands of Kung Fu Omnibus, Vol. 2. For more information on these stories, see the Guide to Shang-Chi.

Updated: Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu Collecting Guide and Reading Order

December 12, 2017 by krisis

As a part of Marvel’s new “Legacy” era of publishing, they’ve revived the series of several long-cancelled heroes for just one more issue. One of those heroes was Shang-Chi, which made for the perfect opportunity to update the Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu collecting guide and reading order!

Maybe you don’t need a guide to every appearance Shang-Chi has ever made right now … possibly because you don’t know who he is! Keep reading for a brief introduction, where to start reading, where Shang-Chi has been in 2017, and why his collected edition standings are a little… unusual.

Crushing Comics S01E32 – Unboxing my October haul of DC Super Hero Girls, Shutter, Epic Collections, and more!

December 5, 2017 by krisis

Today is a *true* unboxing, as I unpack the contents of my October comics order from the states! Still no spiders in the mysteriously ratty mail bag (whew), but a few books I was hotly anticipating, two new Epics, and a pair of odd Marvel trades.

Want to start from the beginning of this season of videos? Here’s the complete Season 1 playlist of Crushing Comics.

Episode 32 features DC Super Hero Girls, Vol. 4: Past Times At Super Hero High (Amazon), Shutter, Vol. 05: So Far Beyond (Amazon), Spider-Man: The Daily Bugle (Amazon), Bloodstone & The Legion Of Monsters (Amazon), Thor Epic Collection, Vol. 3 – The Wrath Of Odin (Amazon / Thor Guide), Doctor Strange Epic Collection, Vol. 13 – Afterlife (Amazon / Doctor Strange Guide), and Shang-Chi, Master Of Kung Fu Omnibus Vol. 4 (Amazon / Shang-Chi Guide)

Not a fan of watching videos – or just not able to watch right now? First, did you know you can speed up YouTube videos? Just click the little gear icon to change the speed settings. I know that makes me much more apt to watch.

Alternately, you can keep reading for the full transcript. Please keep in mind that this season of videos is shot off the cuff with no chance to review the books ahead of time, so I might occasionally fudge some facts (usually addressed in the video by subtitles).
